Who knew? I have job skills
2012-02-02 17:09:00 I’ve spent the last year (or three) worrying about falling behind in my career path while I was home with my kids… Not necessarily that I’d be behind on the “ladder” because I really don’t care about that as long as I enjoy what I’m doing. I was more concerned that I’d be behind the... Read more »

Are Parents Responsible for Their Kids' Lack of Coping Skills?
2011-04-26 05:44:00 Who knows why kids do what they do. I firmly believe we as parents need to stop making life so damn easy for them; it will only make it more difficult for them later. The realization that things don't always go their way shouldn't wait until they are teenagers. If we fail to point this fact out earlier in life, we leave them at a tremendous disadvantage later.
Knife Skills
2011-04-10 05:11:00 When it comes to children and cooking when is the right time to introduce them to a very sharp knife. I asked myself this question this morning when Alex wanted to help me make Bacon and Eggs. His interest in cooking with me has picked up in the last month or so and he is asking me every time I cook if he can help. This morning I taught him how to use one of my chefs knives. I was nervous, as any mother would be. But he took it all very seriously. I showed him how to hold it, where the sharp bits are and how to carry it. I explained to him about how we clean up after cutting any meat and he washed his own knife and cutting board, under my supervision of course. He really surprised me. At 5 years old there are so many things his little hands can't coordinate yet, but he was quite skilled using a knife. So I I will be introducing him to allot more things in the kitchen from now on. He's really building an appetite for cooking from what we are going to cook, picking the right produce...

Saturday night all star fun: Shooting stars and Skills challenge
2011-02-20 02:55:00 Team Chicago didn't exactly represent in the shooting stars competition. I don't know the rules of the shooting stars challenge, since, well, who does. Given that Gasol, Horford, Dirk, and Taj were in it, I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that a PF/C had to be the current NBA player....
Children with autism lack visual skills required for independence
2010-12-21 14:02:00 The ability to find shoes in the bedroom, apples in a supermarket, or a favourite animal at the zoo is impaired among children with autism, according to new research from the University of Bristol. Contrary to previous studies, which show that children with autism often demonstrate outstanding visual search skills, this new research indicates that children with autism are unable to search effectively for objects in real-life situations ? a skill that is essential for achieving independence in adulthood. Previous studies have tested search skills using table-top tasks or computers but none, until now, has tested how children with autism fare in a more true-to-life setting. In a unique test room, 20 children with autism and 20 typical children of the same age and ability were instructed to press buttons on the floor to find a hidden target among multiple illuminated locations. Critically, these targets appeared more on one side of the room than the other.

Michigan State Coach Returns to Sideline, with new Comedic Skills
2010-10-24 16:00:00 Sometimes it's not the best player who's the star of the team, but the Head Coach. The 2005 World Series Champion Chicago White Sox were like that with Manager Ozzie Guillen. And in college football, the face of the program is quite often the coach, so the association is quite natural. When you think of Michigan State Spartans football you probably think of Michigan State Head Coach Mark Dantonio, his gutsy play-calling versus Notre Dame, and the mild attack heart he suffered. Sure ILB Greg Jones is MSU's most talented player, QB Kirk Cousins it's most well known, but the media attention on Dantonio undoubtedly makes him their star. Dantonio took some time off after his heart attack, coached...

2010-08-02 17:48:00 Every once in a while I'll be surprised by a book, and this was one of those cases. This came in from Wiley a couple of weeks back, and my first thought was "Huh?", as this is certainly not a "job search" book per se, nor particularly in my main interest zone. However, I'd gotten bogged down in another book and was looking for something brief that I could finish in July (I try to read at least 72 non-fiction books per year, which works out to six a month, so there is a sense of urgency sometimes in trying to keep those numbers where they need to be!), and this looked like a good candidate. Well, I'm glad that...

The good news is that anyone can acquire these proficiencies; it simply takes time and effort. Due to ultra-competitive job market, future executives must showcase in-demand talents at job fairs, special events and interviews. Here are essential habits to perfect if you want to excel in your next career opportunity: Professional Demeanor (friendly smile; confident handshake; stylish attire/grooming; upright posture; articulate voice; direct eye contact; positive attitude; be polite to everyone) Social Manners (unplug IPod upon entering building; be prompt for meetings; take initiative to turn off cell phone/PDA; display patience; send sincere thank you cards; grasp office culture) Dining Etiquette...

PGA Tour can learn from John Daly's social skills
2010-02-25 20:12:00 Although the PGA Tour "communicates" with its fans through online giants Twitter and Facebook, people who follow don't usually receive much of a personal response. Two-way conversation is crucial to opening the doors of social media. With social networking still in its infancy, the potential for growth within these two vastly contrasting formats is enormous, providing that the PGA Tour is willing to adapt its style to meet the demands of both. Executive producer of PGA TOUR.com Scott Gutterman feels that by extending reach to Twitter and Facebook, fans will experience a "direct connection" that they crave but admits that "their audience numbers are not as high as the Tour would ultimately like." Guttman understands that "two-way communication of social media doesn?t happen overnight." ESPN sports analyst and former NBA star Jalen Rose believes that "interaction" is the key to more fans and followers. "The PGA needs to talk with the fans who are posting on their wall. They need ...
Sales Jobs are Plentiful and Build Career Skills
2010-01-19 13:10:00 Sales positions dominate classified ad sections in many newspapers and online sites, yet many job seekers pass over them in search of preferred career-specific&-nbsp;opportunities that are harder to find. During my tenure at Eli Lilly, management-level employees were required to go through sales training and actually work for six months in the field as pharmaceutical sales representatives. I went reluctantly at first, but then didn't want to return to headquarters when my sales stint was completed. Many organizations that rely on product sales require such hands-on experience, and the experience builds internal credibility. At Sara Lee, whenever I proposed a new initiative that had significant cost implications, President Paul Fulton would ask: "How many pairs of underwear do we have to sell...
