Slovakia: Bratislava Beer Festival
2007-05-23 17:17:00 Photo by The Sly Gentleman Everyone has heard of Munich’s Oktoberfest, but few people know of Bratislava’s Junifest, which will celebrate its fourth year this June, from June 8 through June 17. This is a shame, because Slovak beer is excellent and the festival has a great program, and is very cheap. A ten-entry pass costs SKK550 (€16.25; $22) and includes a free Junifest beer glass, a discount card, vouchers, and ten raffle tickets. And the festival is certainly not just about beer. Every night is a themed music night, rock, dance, R-n-B concerts as well as a men’s night and a ladies’ night, and also a performance by the Scorpions. The highlight of the festival: an attempt to break the Guinness Book of Records entry for the largest mass toast.

Story#54 Slovakians
2007-05-02 09:21:00 I was born on February 27, 1989, in a small village in central Slovakia, where everybody knows everybody and where being "different" is a problem. My mom and dad are Christians. In the first year of my primary school, my parents registered me in the course of religious education. I knew very little about God then. I remember very well a meeting I had those days with an aunt of mine. She couldn't have children, so she treated me like her own daughter. She spent a lot of her time with me. She took me to the church and to every Sunday sermon during the following five years. But I was just a kid so my "priorities" were focused just on playing games.I tried to please her as much as I could, because I loved her so much. Time passed by and I started to prepare myself for Confirmation. I started to go more often to the church. I don't have fond memories regarding the ceremony itself because two days before I broke my arm. Maybe this was a sign, I don't know. Anyway, I took pleasure on t...
Kosice: Slovakia’s Charming Eastern Capital
2007-04-30 16:58:00 Photo by Martin Baran KoÅ¡ice, Slovakia’s second city, ranks high on our short list of underexplored European gems. Set in a valley, with the Ore mountains to the west and the Salt Hills to the east, KoÅ¡ice remains a delightfully unspoilt place. Slovakia’s budget airline SkyEurope flies between KoÅ¡ice and Bratislava, making the city both easy and cheap to visit. We found one-way fares from Bratislava to KoÅ¡ice for as little as SKK436 (€13; $18) in May. That’s including taxes and charges, Cheapos. In KoÅ¡ice, take time to just wander through the cobbled streets with their pastel buildings, dating from the time when KoÅ¡ice was an eastern metropolis of the Hapsburg Empire. We recommend a visit to Craftsman’s Row, a long street in the heart of the city, where leather and jewelry makers, silversmiths, coin minters, herbalists, potters, and bakers make and ply their wares. In the summer, cold Czech beer flows freely on the streets and squares. On the main street ...

Slovakia: Europe Place
2007-04-03 19:09:00 Photo by Fero Hanus As a tourist destination, Slovakia is generally overlooked and underestimated. In our view, this is a great shame. The Tatra Mountains in the north of the country are charming in winter (cheap skiing!) and summer (gentle trekking!), and Slovakia’s lowland south is not without its attractions, either. One lowland draw is the Danube’s twin city of Komarom/Komarno (the former is the town’s Hungarian side, the latter the Slovak side). Both sides of the city have good thermal spas, but the Slovak side also has the unique “Europe Place.” Europe Place is a large square in the heart of the city filled with houses, each of which represents architectural styles of different European countries. They are also cleverly arranged to represent historical ties between countries: the Slovak, Hungarian, and Austrian houses are side by side, symbolizing the time these countries spent together in the Austro-Hungarian empire. Most houses also functio...

Story #44 Slovakian Man
2006-12-02 16:08:10 [Slovakia City] All praise be to Allah. We have new brother in Islam, and May Allah shows men and women to get the right path and give muslims all over the world peace. And I hope that my new brothers and sisters find the thruth, Amin. This morning, again, I read new convert story of Bandar Brano from Slovakia . Like other, our new brothers and sisters chose they new path after the don't get answer from they old faith. Quran says: "This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion" [Al-Maa'idah 5:3]. When I turned 12, religion started to be taught at schools, so I was among the first students to enroll. I was very eager to be baptized, hoping that only this way I could be "saved." Even though I was not very enthusiastic about catechism classes, I insisted on my decision to enroll, earning the sarcasm of my schoolmates and close family as well. I prayed, read the Bible, participated in Masses, and assisted t...

Boiled Pig Heads and Czechoslovakia
2006-09-06 07:08:00 You know there are two types of polititians; ones that are boiled pig heads and ones that are eternal. The eternal ones are decades ahead of all others. The boiled pig heads like the NDP's Jack Layton are brain dead. These are the polititians who will give away some one else's country and naively believe in some airy-fairy, abbra cadabbra, "peace in our time" magical gimme. In 1939, the world and that included Britain gave away Chechoslavakia to Germany's Hitler in the belief that such would lead to peace in our time. Of course, as we all know, Hitler and Germany were not satisfied with that and went on to take Poland because that was the nature, with which the world was dealing, of fascism. Those that knew the evil of that nature knew that giving away Chechoslavakia was wrong and that such would not be enough to quell the thirst of fascism's nature. The eternal ones like Ariel Sharon who weeks after 911 besieged the world to not treat Israel like Chechoslavakia spoke with the kno...
