2009-04-25 16:09:00 Sometimes, the world is a smaller place than we ever imagine it could be. A few years ago, used to work at a bank as an information technology person. (Hence the nickname, ‘BitHead’. I’m a tech, by trade, usually working in some type of computer/technology position.) Unfortunately the department that I was attached to, closed, and my job was eliminated and I ended up moving on to other things. To this day however, I consider it the best job I ever had. At least, outside of my first love, which was always radio. Still, that’s been 20 years, now since I did that, so…(sigh) Anyway, in working at that job I discovered how small the world really is. I don’t necessarily remember the basic tenets of the book, but it ranged from such claims as the benign (the Disney company doesn’t treat its employees very well) to the absurd (the Disney company is actually a cult). How preposterous! How ridiculous! The Disney Company isn’t evil! It’s not as if, sometime in the 90’s, the Disney Company actually went and built a town in Florida, complete with its own zip code! Oh wait. Never mind. Big deal. So a few people are such fanatics of All Things Disney that they actually move to a town designed by the Disney Company. Good riddance, I say. As far as I’m concerned, people who are such fanatics of any one idea or company or person should have every right to move to a town of like-minded people. Besides, it’s not as if any of the current presidential candidates’ supporters are such fanatics that they’re actually designing in town in Texas...

Hand on hat, she stands as if she expects a puff of smoke to topple it, leaving her exposed, hair on end, skull pulsing with truths she’ll never speak aloud.

I get a call from a woman saying one of my former tenants from hell is using me as a reference (proof the guy was really pickled from all the alcohol he drinks!). When I called her back, turns out she knows me from years ago (she recognized the address of the rental property); we used to ride our horses together! So we had a happy reunion via the phone and she decided NOT to rent to my former tenant (she was slightly tipped off when he said he didn't have his checkbook, couldn't come up with a deposit immediately, etc etc). The ride opened in 1964 (when overweight people were virtually unheard of) but lately the boats have been getting stuck and even scraping the bottom of the canals because they can't support the growing weight of portly parents and their kids. I say, weight restrictions!!! This is pathetic when a nation can't control its appetite so badly it forces a Disneyland ride to be upgraded! This has already been scheduled for the Small World ride, which will be closed for almost a year beginning in January for retooling. The Small World ride now must accommodate adults who frequently weigh north of 200 pounds, which it often cannot do. Increasingly, overweighted boats get to certain points in the ride and bottom out, becoming stuck in the flume.

I was early to the meeting spot and she and the rest of her family were still a few hours out, so, being a lover of photography, I took my daughter over to see Jim Richardson's Flint Hills photographs at the Small World Gallery. As I stand there drooling and trying to take in the beauty of every photo, Jim comes out to greet us from the other side of a room partition. He and my daughter chit-chat about a sculpture standing about four feet off the floor that looks like a giant mushroom. (It was a big hit with this 4-year-old I tell you!) As I continued to look at the photographs along the wall, I read how these photographs are in the April 2007 issue of National Geographic Magazine. I have since seen the photographs in the magazine and can tell you that I much prefer the ones Jim has on his walls. They are huge, colorful and beautiful...
