For Chinese car buyers interested in a Smart ForTwo, the real deal will finally be available. Daimler AG's head of sales and marketing, Klaus Maier, said yesterday that the city car will be available in China starting in the middle of 2009. For a while now, domestic manufacturers have been selling vehicles that look suspiciously similar to the ForTwo (some with a battery-powered drivetrain, see here and here). Daimler has apparently realized there's a market for the city car and Maier told journalists yesterday that, "I am happy to announce that Smart, the original micro compact car, is coming to China next year. If you've spent any time on the streets of Beijing, you know that it is the perfect place for creative solutions to urban mobility." Not quite...I spotted a BMW X5 on the street one day while out walking. Now, I recognize cars. And this X5 to me looked all wrong. I know that X5 received a face lift and I thought that maybe, this was it. But something was not right. On a closer inspection, I realize it was actually another make, designed to look like the X5. The owner must have replaced all the badges with a BMW logo badge and the X5 tag. Amazing!There were too many people on the street and as it was, they were staring at me walking and round and staring at the car so I didn't take a picture. I finally saw the real face lifted X5 on the road - what a beauty and was relieved to know that design is still top with Auto Bavaria!

The electric version will have a 41hp electric motor, which will be able to reach speeds up to 69mph and will have a range of 70 miles. Charging time for the electric smart car is about 8 hours, and that will cost you about $3 in electric. DaimlerChrysler AG announced today that they have recalled 1650 MKII Smart Fortwos in Europe after reports of steering problems. The recall was announced after DaimlerChrysler received numerous reports that a locking ring was not installed correctly.The second-generation Fortwos went on sale in April and they have sold 12000 units since. DaimlerChrysler spokesman Hubert Kogel stated that all affected vehicles were recalled, repaired, and returned to their owners. Researchers from the University of Tokyo, Oita University, the Shimane Institute of Health Science and Delta Tooling, an industrial equipment manufacturer, have developed a prototype smart car seat capable of detecting when its occupant is on the verge of falling asleep. The seat was unveiled at a symposium held at the University of Tokyo on February 5. The researchers began by studying the physiological signs of 100 sleepy subjects, focusing particularly on the changes in pulse and respiration that occur 10 minutes before falling asleep. They then developed a system of sensors that could both detect these changes and be embedded in the seat. The seat is equipped with a pair of pulse-monitoring pressure sensors in the seat-back and a set of respiration-monitoring sensors underneath.
