Torturous Embarrassment Of Tourette's Syndrome
2007-05-12 04:15:00 The symptoms can be unsettling, to say the least: a person may suddenly start twitching uncontrollably and shouting obscenities. Called Tourette's syndrome after Dr. Gilles de la Tourette, who first described it in 1884, the strange disorder was thought to be a psychological problem, but psychotherapy proved useless in controlling the behavior of Touretters, as sufferers of the syndrome are called.Doctors now believe that Tourette's syndrome is a neurological disorder that affects the chemical balanced of neurotransmitters in the brain. However, little is known, and many Touretters are not properly diagnosed. For some reason it afflicts more males than females. Many researchers think the syndrome may be inherited. It generally begins in childhood with facial tics and can progress to spasms involving much of the body. As one Touretter described it, keeping his muscles from twitching was like "trying to stop a sneeze." Only during sleep are the symptoms absent. In medieval times, som...

SNP Victory Over Labour - Embarrassment for Brown
2007-05-06 00:05:00 The SNP is victorious. The SNP won a total of 47 of the 129 seats. Labour was just one behind on 46. Britain's political map was reshaped in a dramatic result last night after the Scottish National Party ended Labour's 50-year dominance of Scotland. This is certainly to cast a shadow over Gordon Brown's expected "coronation" as Prime Minister. Labour took a kicking from voters across Britain in

It reads in part: Over a dozen years, I have had many such conversations with Hagel not for quotation. This time, I asked him to go on the record about his assessment of what the "surge" has accomplished. In language more blunt than his prepared speeches and articles, he described Iraq as "coming undone," with its regime "weaker by the day." He deplored the Bush administration's failure to craft a coherent Middle East policy, blaming the influence of Deputy National Security Adviser Elliott Abrams. *snip* After his latest visit to Baghdad, Fallujah, Ramadi and Anbar Province, Hagel told me: "This thing is really coming undone quickly, and Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's government is we...

Is Anorexia Nervosa a Delusional Disorder? An Assessment of Eating Beliefs
2007-04-06 15:29:00 Abstract: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a serious mental illness, characterized in part by intense and irrational beliefs about shape and weight, including fear of gaining weight. Although these beliefs are considered to be a diagnostic criterion for the illness, they have not been systematically characterized. This study used the Brown Assessment of Beliefs Scale (BABS) to identify the dominant belief that interfered with eating in a sample of underweight patients with AN (N = 25). The degree of insight was assessed quantitatively. The majority of participants (68%) spontaneously reported a dominant belief consistent with fear of gaining weight or becoming fat. Twenty percent of patients were categorized as delusional. The total score on the BABS was significantly correlated with the drive-for-thinness subscale of the Eating Disorders Inventory (EDI) (r = 0.41, p = 0.04), but did not correlate with overall measures of AN severity (body mass index [BMI], duration of illness, lowest BMI, ...

Newspaper publishers are poor businessmen?
2007-04-04 14:26:00 That seems to be the point of Jim Cramer in a RealMoney.com column (”Lack of Financial Acumen Burns Newspapers“). “All of these companies seem to be run, frankly, by jokers or dreamers who had no idea how to deploy capital. The only explanation I can think of is that they were run by people who are up from the newspaper side or are heirs to the founders and had no idea what they were doing financially.” That may be, but I’m sure there are other reasons. One could be: Publishers and owners of newspapers should think of themselves of being in the business of informing the public. The Fourth Estate. The delivery of the information should not matter. So, I simply see the majority of newspaper publishers as being myopic. Narrow minded. Even arrogant that print has been king so long, so why not even longer? Up until recently, has running a newspaper really been that easy? I mean, how could newspapers have been so successful so long? It is because the media i...

HOW TO HANDLE ONLINE HARRASSMENT
2007-03-30 02:54:00 FROM WHOAYou must clearly tell the harasser to stopGenerally speaking, it is unwise to communicate with a harasser. However, as soon as you determine that you are truly being harassed by someone, you must very clearly tell that person to stop. Simply say something like "Do not contact me in any way in the future" and leave it there. You do not need to explain why, just state that you do not want the person to contact you. Sometimes it is helpful to copy this message to the abuse department of the harasser's ISP. Keep a record of this message for your records. Do not respond to any further messages of any sort from the harasser. Don't have anyone else contact the harasser on your behalf. It is common for the harasser to claim that you are harassing him or her, but if you aren't contacting the person, it is clear that you aren't the harasser.Save everythingOne of the first impulses many harassment victims have is to just delete any communications they've received, and that's a ba...
Some Embarrassment for Richardson
2007-03-28 05:01:00 New Mexico governor Bill Richardson has gotten into a very public spat with the state senate, one which Richardson himself initiated, and it's becoming a bit of an embarrassment for him. Ordinarily the state legislature is only in session for 60 days during odd numbered years and 30 days during even numbered years and is expected to pass all the necessary legislation for the upcoming year during each session. In practice what happens is that the legislature approves almost nothing until the final 7-10 days of each session and spends the final 2-3 days in nonstop session frantically trying to pass more than half the legislation produced in each session, with the result that many items with broad support simply don't get completed or, more often, are blocked during the final rush by one or two senior legislators who oppose the legislation. This year's legislative session, which Richardson hoped would pass a lot of showy legislation which Richardson could tout on the presidential...
