Smooth Jazz: Gentle Into That Good Night?
2008-04-06 00:00:00
A-ha! Have we finally arrived at the end of the era of smooth jazz, that horribly-named type of music that consistently conflated "real" jazz with "fake" jazz? Born in focus groups conducted in windowless conference rooms, named by a radio station consultant, derided by critics, smooth jazz vanished from Washington's FM radio dial as the month began. It was 14 years old. This tidbit is hard to believe, though: It was a listener who uttered the phrase that a consultant used to sum up this fusion of instrumental music styles. At a focus group held in Chicago by Broadcast Architecture, the firm that first sold radio stations on the new format in the early 1990s, a woman who was asked to describe the songs being tested blurted out "smooth jazz." It seems next to impossible to trace the origin of the marketed name for this Kenny-G-kind of music to one woman in one focus group. But the Washington Post says it's true...hmmm... The problem was never really with the type of music in t...
Citadel radio dumps Chris Core, smooth jazz
2008-03-02 00:29:00
After a horrific earnings report, embattled radio station owner Citadel Broadcasting fired WMAL/630's Chris Core and dumped WJZW/105.9's smooth jazz format along with its on-air staff. WJZW was flipped to a satellite driven "true oldies" feed with smooth jazz moved to a jockless HD2 feed.A former innocuous dj turned moderately conservative talk show host, Chris Core was axed from WMAL following his Friday late morning broadcast without being allowed an on-air good-bye... that after 33 years of tenure at the station. ----The D.C. firings match wholesale dumpings of Citadel air staff from stations based in New York, Atlanta, Chicago, San Francisco among other places. Former WAVA/WMZQ radio disc jockey Sandy Weaver was fired as part of the Atlanta purge. What's left at WMAL and too many other Citadel stations to count are just mere shells of once great outlets. The inescapable conclusion is that the people who really don't belong in radio are not the ones who were fired but the Cita...

Keiko Matsui - Moyo
2007-12-16 14:07:00
Keiko Matsui, born in Tokyo as Keiko Doi on July 26, 1961, is a Japanese smooth jazz/new age pianist and composer whose music and sophisticated elegance have propelled her to success and established a cult following among her fans. A prolific recording artist, Matsui's career spans three decades, during which time she has released twenty CDs (in addition to various compilations) and has received international acclaim. Matsui's music is powerful and introspective, blending both western and eastern musical influences. She has a very spiritual view of composing music, feeling out each composition as though it were, in her words, "coming to me from another space, another dimension," and "catching notes from the silence and then simply placing them together". Matsui sees music as "the great gifts from the human souls from the past, for the children of the future". She believes that music has a power to bring people together and change their lives. "We are connected by music," Matsui wr...

Kurt Maloo - Soul and Echo (2005)
2007-12-05 22:12:00
Kurt Maloo, a former painter, made his first musical appearances in the early '70s at gallery openings and similar events in Zurich. From 1976-78, he was part of Troppo, a nine-piece experimental band of which he was a founding member. In 1979, he released "Giant Lady", a solo single; the following year came the innovative EP "Luna, Luna + The Notorious Maloo Home Works". In 1980 Kurt met Felix Haug (later 50% of Double) and formed, with the addition of a bass player, a trio called Ping Pong. They built a following through their own recordings and live appearances at a number of European festivals, including the Montreux Jazz Festival. In 1983, Maloo and Haug decided to make a go of it as a duo. As Double, they first recorded a 12" single called "Nanningo". It was followed in 1984 by two more singles - "Rangoon Moon" and "Woman of the World", both of which appear on Blue in updated or remixed versions - and a self-produced black and white video, that became a cult cl...

Marcus Johnson - The Phoenix (2007)
2007-11-13 20:00:00
It all began in 1996, when the Ohio native was pursuing both his MBA and Juris Doctorate degrees at Georgetown University . Fresh out of Howard University and ready to balance the creative and the practical with purpose, he had big dreams of releasing his own debut contemporary jazz album entitled Lessons in Love , an enigmatic masterpiece showcasing Johnson's flair for the piano. Armed with both the moral and financial support of his doting sister, he was able to release Lessons in Love, as well as launch his career as a contemporary jazz artist. In 1997, the multi-talented pianist released his sophomore album, Inter Alia . In the Kemp Mill Music retail chain, this CD outsold the Titanic soundtrack in the first two weeks after its release. This led to Johnson signing a deal with N2K Encoded Music. N2K took Inter Alia and renamed it Chocolate City Groovin' . When N2K was sold, Johnson was able to reclaim his rights to his masters and, again, started releasing CDs under the Marimel...
