Snails indicate Climate change?
2008-06-05 20:18:00 Users of a busy carriageway in Germany witnessed a fuss caused by a large number of snails, which became a cause of several accidents. Some experts believe that the mass migration of these snails could have been due to climate change since snails sought a more becoming environment.

Caracóis - Portuguese Snails
2008-05-02 15:46:00 The French call them Escargot, we call them Caracóis - they’re not the same type of snail, nor do we bathe them in butter like the French, but they’re equally delicious, and right now they’re available in restaurants across the country. African Snails Revisited
2008-04-29 06:54:00 Submitted by commenter blackbart These snails are prolific. Theoretically one pair can become 8 to 10 billion individuals in their 5 to 7 year life span. TWD - Cherry Brioche Snails
2008-03-18 00:32:00 For those of you who might be a bit late to the party, Tuesdays with Dorie is fabulous weekly food blog baking event started by Laurie of quirky cupcake, that has the participants baking our way through Dorie Greenspan's Baking: From My Home to Yours. This is my fourth round with TWD, having got my start last month with TWD's recipe attempt #9: Pecan Sour Cream Biscuits. Committing to baking one recipe a week, seemed daunting, but as I was looking to bake more often and with more variety in 2008, TWD seemed like a great way achieve my goal. Not only is everyone baking the same recipe, but we're adding our own touches ("playing around" as Dorie calls it), pushing the boundaries of our baking comfort zones, and most importantly, we're supporting each other in the process. Troubleshooting is so much easier when you've got your very own forum to voice our insecurities (this week's hot topic of insecurity: flambéing raisins), our dislikes (substit...

Brioche Raisin Snails
2008-03-18 00:00:00 There are now more than 80 members who bake Tueday's with Dorie. This week Peabody of Culinary Concoctions by Peabody has chosen Brioche Raisin Snails . This brioche recipe is different from mine I tried Monday last week. I followed the recipe with some modifications: Contrary to Dorie's recommendation I halved the Golden Brioche recipe and it worked fine. I used the seeds of one vanilla bean to flavour the pastry cream I whisked the cream in bain marie in a pan with a rounded bottom to prevent a thin layer of cooked egg yolks in the edges I omitted the cinnamon sugar for the filling I used a length of dental floss to cut the snails I liked the result and will definitively will bake the snails again. Thanks Peabody for chosing this recipe. But I was a little disappointed by the taste of the flambéed rum raisins. There was not a hint of rum flavour left after baking. Next time I'll soak the raisins over night in rum to save the rum flavour after baking. Enjo...

Gardening Guide - Tips For Getting Rid of Snails and Slugs In The Garden
2008-02-04 03:06:00 So you go to your favorite garden shop and purchase two beautiful pepper plants. It took awhile because you had to sort through all the plants to find the best, most healthy ones. And they were not cheap. Seems like the price goes up every year. You go home and select that perfect spot in the garden and plant your new peppers. The next morning you wander out to the garden with a cup of coffee to admire your new peppers and to see if they have miraculously grown six inches overnight. Then your heart sinks as you discover your plants are gone. Not just nibbled on by some bug...they are gone. You have just been victimized by the scourge of the garden. Slugs!Snails and slugs (I'll just refer to slugs hereon) can completely devour a small plant in one sitting. As well as take huge chunks out of the leaves on larger plants. Perhaps slugs have some benefit to mankind, but I can not think of any. Certainly not in my garden. So, how do we get rid of them?First, no matter what method you event...

9 Amazing Facts About Snails
2008-01-06 22:42:00 ** ---Quote--- Image: http://news.softpedia.com/image-s/news2/9-Amazing-Facts-About-S-nails-3.JPG 1.World's largest snail is the Australian trumpet (Syrinx aruanus), a sea species from the shores of northern and western Australia which can grow up to 77.2 cm (30 inches) in shell length, while the flesh weighs up to 18 kg (40lbs). The longest snail is Parenteroxenos doglieli, a parasite in the body cavity of the sea cucumber. Cymbium proboscidalis, from the shores of West Africa, grows up to 7-8 kg (15-17 pounds) and the body is so large that the shell remains like a beanie. Brought on ground, the snail's weight decreases to a quarter. Locals make from this snail a dish called tibuden, adding rice and fish. Some sea rabbits (which are sea snails lacking a shell) can be 30 cm (1 ft) long and weigh 6.5 kg (14 pounds). 2.The largest snail you could see in your garden is the Giant African Snail or Tiger Snail (Achatina achatina), which can be 30 cm (1 ft) long. Snails (Escargots) - European Street Food - In Photos
2007-11-17 14:13:00 Who knew that snails, also known as escargot, were street food in Europe. I didn’t know that the snail was included in the fast food genre until I encountered this Street Food Van at the Exotic Street Markets near Lemmonier Station in Brussels, Belgium. Snails: The Enemy
2007-11-08 09:18:00 The life of a farmer raising livestock is entirely dependant on how much grass they can get to grow on their land. Stock eat the grass, grow fat, and then are sold. So it comes as very little surprise that the snail is an enemy of agriculture in two ways. First of all, it’s eating thegrass that the stock could have eaten. Second, they carry within them the infective stages of devastating parasites known as flukes. Fasciola hepatica, here on the left, is the main culprit here in Australia. Known commonly as the Liver fluke, the name is fairly self-explainatory. The adult lives in the bile ducts of mammals, usually cattle and sheep, but it has been known to infect horses and even people on occasion. In sheep they commonly cause sudden death from hepatitis as the immature flukes migrate through the liver tissue, eating away. Cattle usually suffer a more chronic form of the disease, because the bigger livers of cattle can cope with more flukes than smaller livers. Fasciola hepati...

Who Wants to Use the Potty? What if Pocket Snails Helped Out?
2007-10-28 01:42:00 Trying to figure out how to get a toddler to go to the bathroom in a potty as opposed to using a diaper can be a daunting task. Potty training is an absolutely essential part of a child's growth and development, and yet (or maybe consequently) it can be one of the most frustrating. Any and every aid available to parents to try and help with this task is welcome. A new DVD, featuring the Pocket Snails, entitled Pocket Snails: Potty Adventure has recently entered the fight to help the potty training process. The Pocket Snails are a group of three snails, who, as their name suggests, live in a young boy's pocket. The snails, Gordon, Dale, and Buttons, go around helping Jake (the boy in whose pocket they reside), and in this case Jake's little sister, Wendy, learn about certain things. As the title makes clear, this time around it is how to use the potty.Upon learning that Wendy is going to be potty trained, the snails take it upon themselves to use their Potty Steps ...

What Will They Remember?
2007-09-03 16:41:00 My childhood was idyllic in nearly every sense of the word. So much so, that I often lament the possibility that my own children may fail to possess one quite as grand. In fact, after losing much of last week to the confines of the couch with a dreadful cold, there were moments where I became quite convinced that my children were doomed to spend their adulthood reflecting on childhood memories of a grumpy sniffling excuse for a mom and of unparalleled boredom. (Ok, perhaps I was feeling a tad sorry for myself).I can think a million memories of my own childhood that make me smile, that make me laugh: Memories of mornings with Dad getting ready to go to work and how he often let me play with a great poofy handful of shaving foam as he shaved. Of blanket forts and wonderful books with Mom. Of pretending to be asleep after a long car ride home so Dad would carry me inside even though I'm now certain he knew I was really awake. Of downstream swims with Mom on hot summer days in t...

Let Them Eat Bologna
2007-08-29 04:19:00 102. Not a number I function well at when applied to average body temperature. I have finally managed to scavenge the remnants of my over-nuked brain through unsupervised (and in all likelihood, completely irrational and quite possibly even toxic) doses of tylenol and iburofen. At the moment, I am percolating at a slightly addled 101.1... The most clear-headed I have been all day. Might as well type a post since I most definitely do not feel like doing anything about the load of laundry that has been sitting in the washer since Saturday evening. I probably have strep throat, although at this point I have avoided any attempt at medically confirming that diagnosis. The thought of carting my little entourage with me to a doctor appointment is enough to push me past the boundaries of anything remotely resembling a rational cognitive state. I'm walking a fine line here as it is.All things considered, I think I did OK for the day. The kids are still breathing. The house didn't b...
Snails with Grapes.....Uh?
2007-08-24 11:45:00 The longer I live in France, the more I realize that all Pains aux raisins are NOT created equal here. Take for example, the Pains aux raisins in Burgundy. Oftentimes in France, you’ll come across many examples where a French region has adulterated changed a staple food of France, even naming it something different to suit its own tastes (and specialities) and to fight for their own regional culinary culture.Burgundy is known for a few things: its wine, its food, usually consisting of lots of wine: Coq au vin, which is chicken in wine, Boeuf Bourgignon, which is beef cooked in wine, Pochouse, a dish with 4 kinds of fish cooked in wine, Andouillette au chablis, which are sausages cooked in wine, Oeufs en meurettes, an interesting spin on eggs that are poached in wine, Les Tripes au Rosé de Marsannay, which is tripe cooked in wine. Are we seeing a pattern here? I think I now know why the people here are so friendly and happy.Anyway - probably most famous of all foods from Burgundy ...

Snails in the Garden
2007-08-15 23:26:00 We all have snail problems. They are slimy, horrible and eat my precious vegetables! Snails can be hard to stop, however hard you try you always get one muching on your veggies.  Here are a few ways I stop them.  Upturn a flower pot, snails will soon find there way under them to get in the shade. Then it is up to you to ‘get rid’ of them however you wish.  Make beer traps and get ‘em drunk. The snails will become tipsy and fall in the beer and die. A great way to die!  Simply check for snails daily and again ‘get rid’ of them in anyway you want. You will find that you will be able to get rid of 60% of snails by just doing this  Slug pellets, I don’t like them and don’t use them but they do work. If you are having big problems with snails then you may decide to use them.  So how do I ‘get rid’ of the snails? I collect them and place them in a jar full of soapy water, it will kill them instantly. Another famous method of killing them which an old friend o...
Vacuum Cleaner Kisses
2007-08-15 04:03:00 They grow up so fast. Seems like one minute I'm changing a little guy's diapers and the next, he's in the middle of his first big crush. Hang on a sec! That really was just a minute ago!As I worked on catching up paperwork today, I kept hearing some funny sounds around the corner in the family room..."Mmmmmmmmaahhh! Mmmmmmmmmmmahh! Ohhhhhhhhhhhh!"What is going on in there? I wondered. I peeked around the door and this is what I saw...Those were the sounds of Kyle. Enthusiastically hugging and kissing our vacuum cleaner. Wasn't quite quick enough to snap one of an actual smooch! We've been trying to get Kyle to give us hugs and kisses for months, but nothing doing! I suppose, because his little heart is apparently already engaged elsewhere. So there you have it. At the precocious age of 16 months, Kyle has found his first major love interest... It's Only Fourteen Hours (...But It Seems More Like 48)
2007-07-31 06:58:00 So. What exactly do Stay-At-Home-Moms do all day? I thought I would present a detailed chronicle, transcribed from an actual memo pad I carried with me throughout the day, so that those of you who feel that the only work done in a day happens in an office might feel thoroughly ashamed of yourselves:6:45 a.m Alarm goes off. I was up until 1:30 am cleaning up the previous day's mess so I don't get up immediately. Mostly cause I know Ken will smack the snooze until I smack him.7:02 a.m. I get up on snooze alarm #3. I thump Ken and he flops out of bed looking as confused as a flash flood victim. I am startled by crunching when my feet touch the floor. Crayons. A whole box. I know I didn't leave them there.7:04 a.m. I start getting Jacqui's breakfast together. We need to leave the house at 9:45 to get to swimming lessons on time, then gymnastics class. We will probably be late, even though we have nearly three hours to get there and I got everything ready the night be...

Cat - Oops! Track Town USA
2007-06-27 00:14:00 You see it a lot these days in Eugene. Olympic Fever. Ever since Eugene won the bid to host the 2008 Olympic Trials, Track Town USA, has been buzzing with anticipation.Enter Jacqui on the scene. Her understanding of the track and field world is an eclectic combination of news footage clips and the Backyardigan's "Racing Day" episode. So today, the following track and field event unfolded in our upstairs hallway:"Mom can I borrow dis?"I peek around the corner from the kitchen and Jacqui is holding up Ken's belt. "Sure. As long as you don't hit or tie anything up with it." If he left it floor, then why not?"Oh good. Dis can be da finish line. Mooooommmmm! Say onnnermart, set, GO! Okay?""Mark, set, GO!"Jacqui blasts down the hall, through the kitchen, around the dining table, back through the kitchen, and back down the hall to the starting line, which is also apparently the finish line. She marches proudly back into the kitchen for her applause and demands an imaginary b...

sugar and spice vs. snails and puppy dog tails
2007-06-09 14:51:00 Now I have to admit that I'm not very egalitarian with my son and gender symbols. He does not own any dolls...and he does not have anything pink. I am bit less restrictive on his appreciation for flowers, however. And if you read my previous post you can understand why he owns his own play kitchen( gotta level the playing field on that one) Generally, he looks like a boy, acts like a boy and owns boy things. Were he a girl he would own both dolls and soccer balls- but he's not. It's really funny that I try not to let my life concepts interfere with my son- but they do.You see- I am quite sexist, but not in a traditional way. No. I actually think women are superior. As a feminist, I believe that women are capable of assuming all types of roles, but men are much more limited. It is a very rare man indeed who can stay home with a child- and yet it is not rare at all to find powerful women in business, politics, etc. Perhaps time and social changes will alter my view. But for the mome...

Snips And Snails, and Puppy Dog Tails...
2006-12-01 00:48:00 My wife and I recently visited the doctors office for our 19 week sonogram appointment. It's the one where they check EVERYTHING. From fingers and toes, to cleft lips and any heart deformations. Turns out everything looks fine and we're having a BOY! We didn't really have a preference, only for a healthy and happy baby. Though I have to say whew! You see, my paternal line is pretty thin. My great grandfather was the only male of seven children, my grandfather the only male of four children, my father was an only child, and I'm my fathers only son. When searching the net for articles on the cost of raising a child nowa days, I came accross Bankrates baby cost calculator. According to them it's going to cost about 190k to rasie a child until the age of 18! That's hard to believe. With this one being our first, we talk about having a couple more. Does that really mean about 600k? I'll have more time to pay off a mortgage than raising children. Can you say hand me downs, and pe... |
