Following a recent denial of its motion to stay the ban in the court system, the President of The United States himself (or his administration, anyway) has swooped in to render an executive judgment, and it ain't looking any better for Qualcomm. Saying that the importance of protecting IP rights outweighs the inconvenience of the ban, the Bush folks have stood by the ITC's decision to impose the ban in the first place, making it seem all that much smarter now for Verizon to have sidestepped the whole ordeal and paid Broadcom itself. The ad was killed late Monday after several gay organizations complained to Snickers-maker Masterfoods USA, a division of Mars, that the ad was offensive to gays. “It was never our intent to offend anyone,” says Alice Nathanson, a spokeswoman for Masterfoods USA. The ad involves two mechanics sharing a Snickers by mouth due to dirty hands and accidentally lip-locking. As such, they instantly propose to do something "manly" and pull out their chest hair to make-up for the queerness. However, Snickers had also set up a site with "disgusted audience reactions" and alternate endings to the manly-endings, including drinking poison and beating each other up. He compares the reaction of the gay left to the Snickers ad where two guys end up kissing to “the typical right-wing knee jerk reaction to gay anything on television” and notes (correctly in my view) that if anything, the two men (ashamed that they ended up kissing while both eating the same Snickers bar “are obviously portrayed in a very dim light.” He observes that “Being eternally offended is no way to live.” He got that right.
