Democratic Politics beyond the Third Way
2010-03-05 11:08:00
Social democrats have a strong claim on democracy, and for good reason. First, their opposition to Soviet-style communism and their commitment to parliamentary democracy marked the beginning of their journey towards power. Second, as soon as the alliance with the liberals fulfilled the goal of equality in political representation for the working class, they set their ...
Europe at the Crossroads: It?s Now or Never!
2010-03-02 16:42:00
The European Union is one of the grandest projects in human history ? the creation of a new economic, and eventually social, super-state out of the ashes of post-war despair. The founders had a cunning plan: They would create an economic imperative around the production of essentials such as coal and steel, convinced that a ...
The Good Society Debate continues?
2010-03-01 16:26:00
Following the great success of the Good Society Debate, which was led on this website at the end of last year and brought together an unprecedented number of academics, politicians and activists to discuss the future of European social democracy, the organisers (Social Europe Journal, Friedrich Ebert Stiftung London, Soundings Journal and Compass) have decided to continue this ...
Cool Page On Social Democracy
2008-08-24 12:32:00
This is a really cool page on the Social Democratic Party of America. There are several social democratic parties in the US, and no, rightwing fuckwads, they are not much like the Democratic Party at all. A lot of them don't even like the Democratic Party. Social democracy means a lot of things all over the world. There is a Socialist International of socialist parties all over the world, and I support that organization. Even a lot of Communists don't necessarily hate it. A lot of us on the Left support all sorts of socialist models, from Communism to social democracy even all the way to the US Democratic Party.Your average US rightwing shithead can't seem to figure that out, but then, they subscribe to a philosophy that is narrow-minded and stupid in both intent and praxis.Truth is, as you can see by this page, there is not a lot of love lost between at least this social democratic party and Communists. To say that they are one and the same just shows that you are a stupid rightw...
A Left-Wing Godesberg ? the German SPD?s new Hamburg Programme
2008-01-11 01:02:00
By Detlev Albers The event deserves Europe’s attention: the German Social Democrats adopted a new party programme at their party conference at the end of October 2007. After Berlin (1989) and Godesberg (1959), this is the third post-war party programme. If one wants to cover the whole party history, the Weimar Republic party programmes Heidelberg (1925) ...
Social Democracy on YouTube
2007-12-11 00:10:00
YouTube channels have become a popular medium for political parties and increasingly also elected representatives to interact and communicate. Especially Europe’s social democratic parties have created a rich webTV media landscape. This was reason enough for us to collect the main channels and bring them together in one place. So, here is the definite guide ...

Venezuela's Social Democracy Hits A Speed Bump
2007-12-06 23:08:00
by Stephen Lendman Hugo Chavez addressed upwards of a half million supporters on the final day of campaigning for constitutional reform on December 1. He was confident of a victory that seemed assured. The turnout was impressive as a sea of red filled Caracas' main Avenida Bolivar boulevard and spilled over into adjourning streets. It dwarfed the November 29 final opposition rally Rupert Murdock's Times online/UK and Fox News estimated at "more than 100,000" ahead of saying "polls predicted an agonizingly close result" that referred only to the corporate-run ones. They turned out to be right. A day ahead of the vote, Chavez addressed the joyous crowd saying a "yes" vote will "open the path to socialism (and is) a vote for Chavez and the revolution (while) vot(ing) "no" is a vote for Bush. We are not simply confronting the pawns of imperialism. Our true enemy is US imperialism (that) will only recognize the results if they win."Wr...
Making Participatory Democracy Work!
2007-10-08 00:07:00
By Henning Meyer The PES has now officially launched its consultation process for the 2009 European Election Campaign manifesto. Here is the first brief contribution about participatory democracy I have submitted: It seems very likely that one of the direct democratic elements of the Constitutional Treaty will be preserved in the coming amendment treaty: The right of ...
The hidden face of social democracy
2007-07-12 14:29:00
Matthew Yglesias is questioning the political influence of the great twentieth century political philosopher, John Rawls: Marc Ambinder, pondering the significance (if any) of Russel Kirk, remarks of John Rawls that "Liberals might not know much about him, but his writing and thinking underpin the modern Democratic Party theory of redistributive rights and expansive government." This is obviously a complicated issue, and I'm about to give it short shrift, but it's worth noting that the timing is wrong for Rawls to be politically influential.A Theory of Justice is published in 1971, after the key elements of the Great Society and the War on Poverty were already in place. The main progressive policy accomplishments of the post-TOJ era have tended to be remote from the concerns about the distribution of wealth and income that Marc is alluding to here. Yet Rawlsian theory is crucial to any politician who adheres to the Third Way or capitalist social democracy. Faith in modern c...
