How?s this for Renault?s Corporate Social Responsibility?
2009-09-23 19:18:00
When in 2002 the Benetton Formula One team morphed into Renault it was clear that what the French car giant was seeking to do was to secure brand value from the move, in return, of course, for funding. Constructors’ and Drivers’ championships in 2005 and 2006 will undoubtedly have given the brand a major boost ...

Finally, a logical approach to building in rapidly developing nations like Nicaragua. The aim is to empower local ...
PinoyBlogoSphere.com - Giving Back through Corporate Social Responsibility
2008-05-29 05:00:00
Source: www.PinoyBlogoSphere.com - For two years and running in the company I currently work for, we are required to allot four hours of company time (half of a workday) and four hours of our personal time (either we sacrifice part of a weekend or file a half-day vacation leave during a workweek) to extend help to the underprivileged. Last year, 99% of our total company headcount (of about 800) went in groups to various Gawad Kalinga communities around the country to teach children in their makeshift schools. This year, for want to explore other areas where our help may be equally needed, it’s going to be either CRIBS Philippines or Kythe Foundation. It is one thing to be willing to help and another to have the heart to want to deliver the “service” well. I have long realized that I’m not cut as a teacher because I have very little patience around kids in that I easily get annoyed when they randomly move about, cry for no apparent reason, and, most especiall...

Think differently about Nicaragua real estate investments
2008-03-28 01:23:00
Can real estate investors ?do well? while ?doing good??  Can local communities in Nicaragua benefit from the massive growth in real estate investing in the country?  Is there a sweet spot where charitable initiatives increase investment return and social welfare at the same time? These thorny questions get at the heart of what responsible property investing is ...
Support the Dalai Lama
2008-03-24 18:58:00
I just signed an urgent petition calling on the Chinese government to respect human rights in Tibet and dialogue with the Dalai Lama. This is really important, and I thought you might want to take action as well. After decades of repression, Tibetans are crying out to the world for change. China’s leaders are right now ...
Design vs branding
2008-03-18 15:25:00
I was reading an article some weeks ago in the Swedish business magazine Dagens Industri which made me a bit confused. The theme was branding (and design). In the article, Stefan Ölander from the branding agency Rewir says; “Today most products and services are exchangeable, it’s branding and communication that make the difference.” I have a ...
Watch the Earthship grow - day 32
2008-03-07 19:49:00
Today we started compacting the floors. It looks like we’ll be laying tiles, but we have received various ideas from local builders on the best method for laying them. Ideas range from concrete slabs to laying them into the clay earth to everything in between. There’s no rush, so we’ll be moving on to other areas of ...

2008-02-20 15:27:00
Not to long ago an elderly gentleman at the age of 91 was not only carjacked but beat-up by his assailant.  The scary part is that there was people witnessing this horrible crime and no one intervened.  The assailant was 22 year old Deontae Edward Bradley.  Here is the story: So this horrible situation bring us to ...
A fleet of the best Earthship posts from around the world
2008-02-16 19:01:00
The Earthship concept may be new to Nicaragua real estate but, search around a bit, and you’ll find Earthships all over the world. They work in all climates, on most terrains, gradients or exposures, within cities as well as in remote areas, completely off-the-grid.  And people are blogging about Earthships and the logic of green building.  ...

New York based designer Stephen Burks was invited to make a conceptual exhibition at the Stockholm Furniture Fair which materialized into the Craft Café. Green building in Nicaragua - 29th day of the construction of an Earthship.
2008-02-05 02:48:00
The waiting game for the wood has begun.  We’re not talking about that much lumber, but the complications of material acquisition in Nicaragua are becoming clearer everyday.  This is all good ground work for the Earthships that will follow.  And the nice thing about this green building project is that there is always plenty to ...

Nicaragua real estate: Day 26 in the life of a Nicaraguan Earthship
2008-02-01 22:56:00
As our road is under construction, there are very small windows of opportunity to receive materials.  And everyday is an opportunity to learn. Yesterday I was promised by one fellow based out of Rivas that the sand would arrive before 7:00am, an hour and a half before the road crew arrives.  I was also promised by ...
Lot signs are going in on Day 24 of the construction of a Nicaraguan Earths
2008-01-30 16:32:00
It’s midway through the week and it looks as though we will accomplish our short term objectives. Today we saw two hits on the dome and both gutters built up significantly. Although the inside of the building is not currently a high priority, there are enough hands that we are able to continue with “packout” and adobe ...
Green building - Day 23 of the construction of a Nicaraguan Earthship
2008-01-29 16:32:00
The middle dome is ready to receive it’s first coat of plaster.  Inside the building, Seth has been discussing the art of adobe plaster with the local Nicaraguan crew.  The plaster work is coming along well.  Lot’s of busy hands all around us.  Sometimes it’s hard to believe it’s been only 23 working days.   Earthship, green building, ...

Monday is always a natural time to lay out goals and expectations for the week, and with the addition of Phil and Seth, two of Earthship Biotecture’s finest, we decided to set our goals high. All in all it was a decent Monday. We were able to get a skeleton of rebar up and supported for ...
Green real estate in Nicaragua: Day 21 of the construction of a Nicaraguan
2008-01-27 19:30:00
The west dome has received its final coat. This morning we were hit with about a twenty minute downpour and decided that pounding tires would need to wait due to all the fresh mud. And since the dome was already wet and needed to be done eventually, we decided it was a sign. So with Camilo sifting ...

Green real estate in San Juan del Sur: Day 18 of the construction of a Nica
2008-01-24 18:48:00
It always feels good to have work for someone. Today Frederico and Eduardo re-joined the work force.  We are now six from the El Carizal community just south of San Juan del Sur and myself, a lucky seven for the rest of the week. Today the greenhouse wall received a nice smooth (floated) coat.  The exposed ...

Day 16 of the Earthship Construction ? A reflection by Dave Kniffin
2007-12-22 18:45:00
Since the conception of this project, people have asked me what we are doing here, “What is the vision?” or “What is the goal?” And at any given time, the best I can do is offer a snapshot of where we are, and where we are going. It’s an evolving dream. Still, at the base ...

should corporate social responsibility be mandated?
2007-12-21 06:31:00
Everywhere you turn, there's another story about a food, population or an energy crisis and then there's the environmental overlay. Sorry to sound like a real downer in this time of festive goodness and copious consumption, but don't we need a reality check and shouldn't corporate social responsibility be legally mandated? Does everyone believe the markets can solve the problems alone?I was driven to this chain of thought by Steve Hardy's excellent review of Thomas Hardy Dixon's The Upside of Down: Catastrophe, Creativity, and the Renewal of Civilization. Hardy-Dixon's book explores the complex changes that are happing to populations, food and the environment and gives a pretty damming report. "We can't possibly flourish in a future filled with sharp nonlinearities and threshold effects - and, somewhat paradoxically, we can't hope to preserve at least some of what we hold dear - unless we're comfortable with change, surprise, and the essential transience of things, and unl...
Earthship construction: Day 13
2007-12-20 00:09:00
The day was rainy but spirits were high. Luckily down here in Nicaragua the rain is soft and warm. Presently half of the house is harvesting water into the east cistern when it rains. This means that the oxcarts may not have to haul water for the construction of the project anymore. Part of the goal ...

The Kerry Packer Civic Gallery of the Hawke Centre . . . an inviting garden of thought. Climate Change: the biggest corporate social responsibility
2007-10-30 00:30:00
Photo: Clinton SteedsToday I went to a breakfast hosted by the The Australian Centre for Corporate Social Responsibility (ACCSR) where keynote speaker Paul Hohnen talked about climate change and how businesses must become sustainable. He thinks the basic motivation will be either greed or creed. "Climate change might be prevented as much by changes in technology and financial engineering as it will by changes in consumer habits. On both fronts, business must play a key role. In this regard, corporate responsibility has already played a pivotal role in putting these issues on the agenda, and bringing them to the point where leading companies like General Electric and Philips are integrating them into their core business."I think most corporates are in a transition phase, just starting to work out how to be more sustainable. Even though The Body Shop has a proud history of environmental responsibility and activism we don't claim to be perfect, but we're ...
Where's Your Social Responsibility Google?
2007-10-29 18:04:00
By Kalena Jordan (c) 2007 Unless you've been living on a desert island with no Internet access, you've probably seen the recent blog fallout from Google's latest crack down on alleged link brokers. This week it seems that Google made some type of manual Toolbar PageRank reduction on a handful of major blogs and portal sites like the Washington Post, ProBlogger, CopyBlogger and Forbes.com. Some of these sites had PageRank scores of 7 which have now dropped to 5, scores of 6 which have now dropped to 4 and so on. The blog buzz is that the sites have been singled out by Google as using their high PageRank scores to sell links and have been punished by the world's most popular search engine as a result. There is currently no proof of this and no public statement by Google acknowledging or denying the situation.A lot of bloggers have weighed in with commentary, observations and opinions. Every time I read a new post about the so called smack-down I imagine some Googlers at Mountain V...

The greenwashing trend
2007-08-24 09:31:00
The greenwashing trend is unfortunately flourishing. Greenwashing is when companies (or governments) spend more money or time advertising being green, than on investing in environmentally sound practices. Marketers and business executives suddenly understand that green is selling. But sustainability is not about marketing. Sustainability is about design. It means that designers around the world have ...
