Barry Pittard ? On Institutional Cover Ups and Psychological Denial
2011-09-05 03:25:00 In many universities, there is reluctance to study the testimony of apostates. But I would commend - perhaps to a younger and less blinkered generation of academics - that perceived problems about validity of testimony can be overcome from the more or less oblique angle of comparative studies. There is no shortage of dissent from major and powerful institutions, and therefore a large witness base. Indeed, I suggest that one perspective for examining this phenomenon is the positive one of health - rather than of pathology. Witnesses from organization oriented to strong belief systems commonly do not know each other, and this fact yields an immense and rich base of non-colusional evidence. Any academic institution which resiles from the study cults per se backs away from taking seriously one of the prime threats to civil well-being. There is a train of thought which keeps coming home to me when I look at the testimony of dissenters from various authoritarian organizations .... Whe...

INK BLAST | LET'S RAISE MORE HEALTHY AND HAPPY BLACK GIRLS, LIKE THE OBAMA
2008-12-01 19:31:00 The Obamas' little girls represent an ideal of childhood that sadly too few Black children enjoy. It's rare when any two little Black girls get a lot of positive attention in the media. But Malia, 10, and Sasha, 6, who are the picture of healthy, happy kids, have been making a splash.
Politics, Sociology, and the Economy
2008-10-09 12:11:00 I was thinking tonight about this so-called “economic crisis” and the presidential campaign. There is little doubt that Obama’s current nine point lead is mostly a direct result of public fear of the enigmatic, and probably criminal, occurrences on Wall Street and the uncertainty of how the collapse of a few major banks and ...

Dynamics of Change in Islamic Law (III): Grundnorm, a cosmological myth
2008-07-29 16:49:00 To effectively address the original Weberian objection i.e. normative pluralism is substantively irrational, it is mandatory to reformulate the problem in concise terms, starting point being that change in Islamic law takes place by means of some interpretive mechanism called Ijtihad. What exactly constitutes it: Is it the interpretation of the textual source ab initio; ...
Kitchen Sociology and Home Tours
2008-05-26 19:37:00 Yesterday I took my Mom out to the Pasadena Highlands Home Tour in Pasadena, CA.Home Tours are a lot of fun, a chance for homeowners to show off their flair for home keeping and their remodeling savvy and a chance for the general public at large to take a peek at how others keep a home, what taste they have and of course taking note of ideas they can use for their own homes. We had a great time touring through other people's homes and laughing with a little guilt that that we have a lot of organizing to do before we would dare let anyone tour our own homes. We fell in love with the color schemes, the architecture, the gorgeous tree lined streets. And finally, we gained a new appreciation for our circa 1980's tract homes. Albeit, our newer homes can never compare to the charm of the historic Pasadena homes, we have to content ourselves with the fact that our cookie cutter tract homes have bigger closets and wider hallways. As they say, the grass is always greener on the other side ...
What The Political Solution Is Not
2008-05-20 18:00:00 Republicans, open about their objectives, have always claimed that it should not be the responsibility of government to provide a safety net. Altruism Does Not Exist
2008-02-11 11:59:00 The other day I brought up this theme to three people. Two left the room, one with a hurt look on her face, the other slamming down a book on the table and shouting. That left one male, and I succeeded in slowly pissing him off over the next hour or two. I talked to a female friend about this theme tonight and she stormed off too, saying she had to go to sleep.I'm off to an excellent start, but I've only pissed off four people. That's a piss-poor showing, but the theme shows great promise as a provocation. This blog has 800 readers a day, and if I can toss this theme out there and piss off even a small number of them, I can sleep well tonight. Here is my notion: altruism simply does not exist. Along the same lines, everyone uses everyone. If you don't like the term "using", we may substitute the term "utilizing". I really love this theme, because people are always fretting about being used. Suppose you were a millionaire - all your friends would be using you, including those armi...

The discussion with sociology professor
2008-01-11 11:31:00 I am taking "culture, self and identity" for this term. I expect this course to be one of most interesting courses in sociology. The first lecture was on "culture". The professor defined "culture" into two types:Culture (big C) and culture with a small c.Then he went on explaining why the human beings as a unique biological specie though with diversified culture, yet share the common Culture (big c), in which each individual needs and relies on for survival and social development.I asked him "What is difference then the big Culture from human nature?"He said "in fact they are the same. however I am hesitated to use human nature as it has moral implication."He then gave the detailed explanation by using evolution theory. The process of which the apes evolved into human beings has the significant effort in determining human beings as biological cultural creatures. After lecturing, I asked him since evolution theory is not universally accepted, there are some other explanation such as...

SOCIOLOGY links: Holistic Bliss or Tristram Shandy ... IV
2007-09-06 22:11:00 I've introduced the rationale behind the content of the INTERPERSONAL and POLITICAL links pages. Let's now look at SOCIOLOGY: Although the ticking of the clock has a mechano-quantum constancy, people are collectively nudged forward through the 7 AGES that characterise our personal and social lives. These two lives beg a question in terms of Hodges' model and its four care (knowledge) domains. From what I've already said chronological age is mechanistic; but if that is the case in which domain does pathological age reside? Perhaps it is not just one domain, but a matter of span ;-). During four long years of war, while millions of U.S. servicemen were fighting and dying on foreign soil, American women secured the front lines of industry, supporting the war effort in hundreds of jobs previously handled by men. The scene of Rosie the Riveter, in her steel helmet tossing red-hot rivets in the nation’s aircraft factories and shipyards, is a lingering image of the rugged and resourceful female doing a man’s job when times were tough. Other such images entered the public consciousness in the years following the war, including Margaret Bourke-White’s photos for Life magazine of sturdy old babushkas in Soviet Russia manning jackhammers and driving gravel trucks in the streets of Moscow.
