Socrates Shrek!

This is Socrates- not the one that used to play for Brazil, but the ancient Greek Philsopher style of a Socrates. You will notice that he’s not the prettiest eye candy in the store. His philsophy was that a person should always try to “do well” and that one should “know thyself”. This plainly didn’t apply ... 2008-02-23 21:50:00
Dear Infinite Regress Friends and Readers -Many of you have been asking me when the sequel to my novel, The Plot To Save Socrates, will be published. As some of you know, its title is Unburning Alexandria, and I'm currently about half-way through writing the novel (and really enjoying it!)For a variety of reasons, I still can't give you an exact date for publication of the novel. But, I'm pleased to tell you that Analog: Science Fiction and Fact magazine will be publishing the first two chapters of "Unburning Alexandria" as a standalone novelette, later this year. For those of you who have read The Plot To Save Socrates, you'll find some dangling questions at the end of the novel answered - as well, of course, as some new ones raised. (My original draft of The Plot to Save Socrates actually had some of this material in the final chapter.)I am especially pleased that this novelette will be published in Analog. I consider its editor, Stan Schmidt, one of the best editors in the busi...

José Socrates Baixa nas Sondagens
2008-01-18 02:14:00
Socrates In Love
2008-01-03 16:50:00
Overall Rating: A+Synopsis: Also known as "Crying Out Love, In the Center of the World" in Japan, this manga is an adaptation of the Japanese novel written by Kyoichi Katayama. The story follows Sakutaro "Saku" Matsumoto as he looks back on his relationship with Aki Hirose. From the beginning, we know how the story ends, with Aki's death, but the journey there is compelling and touching. The two meet in junior high, and from the beginning have a clear connection to each other. Everyone else thinks they're dating, and it's pretty clear they both want to be with one another. They share audio diaries, go on excursions together, and enjoy summer vacation. In High School, they finally give in to their feelings, and start dating. Unfortunately, it's then that things start going wrong, Aki develops Leukemia and it doesn't look like she's getting better. Can young love survive this tragedy? Socrates in Love made me cry. I'm struggling to describe why I like it so much without soundin...

Socrates: The Immortal Philosopher
2007-10-08 16:35:00
I have to admit I struggled through my first year of philosophy. I found Descartes dreary and logic perfectly illogical. I was rather pleased when I could drop (Western) philosophy for Politics and Economics. I appreciate very few Western philosophers, but, I do have great admiration for Socrates. Socrates was unlike many philosophers because for him the aim of philosophy was not to write down great works of intellectual magnificence. Socrates was primarily interested in searching for and living the real meaning of life. I wrote an article at Pick the Brian about Socrates and the lessons we can learn from his life. Some Quotes from Socrates The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing. ~ Be slow to fall into friendship; but when thou art in, continue firm and constant. ~ By all means, marry. If you get a good wife, you'll become happy; if you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher. ~ I decided that it was not wisdom that enabled poets to write their poetry, but a k...
Small Fireworks after my General Petraeus remarks on KNX 1070 Radio this Mo
2007-09-23 22:35:00
I enjoy hearing from people who disagree with my blog posts, podcasts, radio and TV appearances. I've always agreed with Socrates that dialog is the best path to knowledge. Here's an example of a little exchange that occurred this morning, shortly after my weekly radio interview by Bob Brill on KNX 1070 all-news radio, in which I was talking about the MoveOn.org - General Petraeus "Betray Us" controversy. My position: Most people - just about everyone, I'd say - can understand the difference between a General giving advice to Congress, supporting a President in his harmful foreign policy, that betrays the best interests of our country. This is what the MoveOn.org ad was clearly saying. Not that the General was betraying us on the battlefield, or by working with the enemy - a clearly absurd point to make, and which no one, even the war's most bitter opponents, has ever suggested. But the Republicans are clearly trying to pretend that the literal traitor point is what the MoveOn....

My complete talk about Ron Paul at the Village Pourhouse on August 28th follows. The venue was the back room of a boisterous drinking house ... it's good to think that our Founding Fathers took part in many a meeting in a similar room, as they hammered out the Constitution and Bill of Rights, which are under attack today, which Ron Paul supports, and which is the subject of much of my talk...1. Introduction ... unconstitutional wars and attacks on the First Amendment, prior to 2007...2. Discussion of four instances of ABC's misreporting, distorting, and undermining of Ron Paul's campaign for the Presidency... newspapers did better than broadcasters ... Fox not as bad as ABC...3. Two remedies for mass media misreporting ... rational public discourse (as per Milton and Jefferson) ... increasing numbers of people speaking the truth ... beginning of q & a ... why did Internet fail for Howard Dean in 2004 ... infancy of social media in 2004 ... mass media suffer from trampling of ...

The Mask of Socrates: The Image of the Intellectual in AntiquityUniversity of California Press| ISBN 0520201051 | 1996-03-14 | PDF | 376pages | 6.41 MBThis richly illustrated work provides a new and deeper perspective on the interaction of visual representation and classical culture from the fifth century B.C. to the fourth century A.D. Drawing on a variety of source materials such as Graeco-Roman literature, historiography, and philosophy, in addition to artistic renderings, Paul Zanker forges the first comprehensive history of the visual representation of Greek and Roman intellectuals. He takes the reader from the earliest visual images of Socrates and Plato to the figures of Christ, the Apostles, and contemporaneous pagan and civic dignitaries.Through his interpretations of postures, gestures, facial expressions, and stylistic changes of particular set pieces, we come to know these great poets and philosophers through all of their various personas--the prophetic wise man, the vir...

Ye Olde Book Shoppe
2007-07-15 23:09:00
I do most of my book shopping online these days, and if I go into a bookstore, it's usually a Barnes & Noble or a Borders. But I was thinking today about the best bookstore I have ever been in. I was reading an old, beat-up 1880s copy of Plato's Republic - no, not just for enjoyment (though it is a fascinating book), but I needed it for a section I'm writing in the sequel to The Plot to Save Socrates (ok, that's fun, too). But leafing through that faded book got me to thinking about where I'd acquired it. That shop was my favorite book store...Now, there are lots of contenders. Foyle's in London, science fiction and mystery bookstores up and down the Northeast corridor here in the U.S. where I'm most likely to be at large ...But my all-time favorite was a second-hand bookstore located just off the Bowdoin College campus in Maine. My wife and I happened upon it years ago. I have no idea if it's still in business, but suspect not.It wasn't much of a shop, physically. But it...

The following is a more-or-less verbatim transcript ("uh"s taken out, "so"s left in) of my June 2005 Keynote Address delivered at Fordham University's Media Ecology Association Convention. I'm writing a book with the same title, and will be talking about these issues at the Westport County Playhouse on August 5 (I'll have more details up here, closer to the event). A quote from the 2005 Keynote - "what begins as a seemingly innocent campaign against indecency ... always segues in short order into political censorship" - appears on the May 8 page of the 2007 First Amendment Calendar. A slightly refined version of this talk will soon be published in Explorations in Media Ecology. As as a special treat for InfiniteRegress.tv readers, I've included the actual clip of Brent Bozell vs. me on the First Amendment that I mention in the Keynote...The Flouting of the First AmendmentKeynote address given by Paul Levinson at the Sixth Annual Convention of the Media Ecology Association, Fordh...

Socrates Quote and Wisdom
2007-02-09 20:28:01
"One who is injured ought not to return the injury, for on no account can it be right to do an injustice; and it is not right to return an injury, or to do evil to any man, however much we have suffered from him." "I am not an Athenian, or a Greek, but a citizen of the world." Socrates Socrates was one of the greatest philosophers of the ancient world. He never wrote anything down but his discourses were recorded by his students.
Healthy Lifestyles, Happiness- Socrates, Reviled Alive, Revered Ever After

Socrates caused great consternation among the ruling class when their children who had studied with Socrates would question an unreasonable command from an elder. He was finally presented with his reward, that cup of hemlock. But those fingers who had pointed were soon hounded out of Athens in shame.
