Sodium Benzoate and DNA damage

There is a good list of aspartame side effects and some of the various articles here: Aspartame.A fellow low carber Cleo shared her experiences recently as well: No More Aspartame For Me.However one thing I ponder is if some of the reactions people report due to aspartame could also be tied to another additive, sodium benzoate. Sodium benzoate is very common in soft drinks, and other acidic items such as fruit juices, salad dressings, sauces and vinegar as well as cosmetics and mouth wash and has been linked to hyperactivity in children and DNA damage amongst other things as well as being thought to interact with other additives, E211 Revealed: Evidence highlights new fear over drinks additiveWith that said, there is some good news that I wanted to share this article and a quote: Diet Coke to drop additive in DNA damage fear:Coca-Cola is phasing out a controversi...

2008-02-16 18:12:00 Salt in the diet can cause blood pressure problemsWhile on a business visit to the office of ConsumerAffairs.com's health adviser, Dr. Henry Fishman last summer, I spied a blood pressure cuff on a nearby table.I had battled high blood pressure for years, but nothing I did resulted in acceptable readings. I had lost weight, started exercising, but wasn't yet on any medication."Hey, would you take my blood pressure?" I asked. He applied the cuff to my left arm and squeezed the bulb, forcing air into it. As the air slowly escaped, he looked me in the eye and spoke, both as a doctor and a longtime friend."Do you have a will?" he asked.I must have looked startled because he added, "look, you can do something about this or you can die of a heart attack in five years, it's up to you."Lethal levelMy blood pressure, he told me, was 160/101 – a level he called "lethal." I took his advice and saw my doctor, who agreed I needed to do something and prescribed 40 minutes of exercise four days...

Weight Loss Tip: Hold the sodium please!
2008-02-07 17:36:00 Sodium is needed by the human body to maintain the proper water balance and blood ph. But, excess sodium intake may result in edema, high blood pressure, potassium deficiency, and liver and kidney disease. The Food and Nutrition Board recommended a sodium intake of less then 2,400 mg/day for adults. Keep an open eye when you buy food at the supermarket, many products especially canned and boxed are very high in sodium. For example a slice of bread might have 200mg, macaroni & cheese 580mg, tomato ketchup190mg (per tablespoon), Ready Made Rice 500mg a serving. It might not seem as much at first glance, but when you start adding the total daily intake of sodium might pass the 2,400 mark. For those of you who still eat fast foods, a happy meal combo might supply you around 1400mg of sodium on just that meal.Sodium has an impact in weight loss. A higher sodium intake increases water gain, this will be more noticeable in women. Your body weight is compromise by three components water, ...

Edetate Disodium (marketed as Endrate and generic products)
2008-01-17 06:03:00 FDA notified healthcare professionals and patients about important safety information concerning Edetate Disodium. There have been cases where children and adults have died when they were mistakenly given Edetate Disodium instead of Edetate Calcium Disodium (Calcium Disodium Versenate) or when Edetate Disodium was used for "chelation therapies" and other uses that are not approved by the FDA. Edetate Disodium was approved as an emergency treatment for certain patients with hypercalcemia (very high levels of calcium in the blood) or certain patients with heart rhythm problems as a result of very high amounts of digitalis in the blood. Edetate Calcium Disodium was approved to reduce dangerously high blood lead levels (severe lead poisoning). The two drugs have very similar names and are commonly referred to only as EDTA. As a result, the two products are easily mistaken for each other when prescribing, dispensing, and administering them. Edetate Disodium and Edetate Calcium Disodium w...

He always had frequent headaches, yet we always thought they were from the pressures of raising a large family and the stresses of working seven days a week. As I look back on my Father's hypertension, and having hypertension myself now for many years, and having regular headaches myself, I often wonder whether something could have been done back then to prevent his early demise. I would often note even as a young girl that he would use large amounts of salt on his food. I have analyzed over the years that whenever I have eaten anything salty I wind up with an excruciating headache, and I find it so totally agonizing.
