Soft drinks up risk of gout: Studyhttp://timesofindia.indiat-imes.com/Soft_drinks_up_risk_of-_gout_Study/rssarticleshow/2748-274.cms LONDON: It has long been considered as a disease of the rich. But, no more. Gout can affect all those who have a sweet tooth, according to a new study. A team of international researchers has carried out the study and found that high consumption of sugar-loaded soft drinks and fruit juices substantially ups the risk of gout which is a painful joint disease. According to the team, the risks associated with these fizzy drinks are worse than hard liquor. "This is the first study and a very large one, linking the commonly consumed products to this common disorder. We've found that if you have high consumption of fructose, your gout risk is doubled. And that's due to easily available sugary beverages," lead researcher Hyon K Choi of the British Columbia University was quoted by the British media as saying. The researchers came to the conclusion after followi...
LESS SALT, FEWER SOFT DRINKS?
2008-03-05 06:09:00
Reducing kids' salt intake could help them cut back on sugary sodasChildren who eat less salt drink fewer sugar-sweetened soft drinks and may significantly lower their risks for obesity, elevated blood pressure and later-in-life heart attack and stroke, researchers reported in Hypertension: Journal of the American Heart Association.Previous studies have shown that dietary salt intake increases fluid consumption in adults. But researchers at St. George’s University of London, England, are the first to examine whether the same is true in children.“Sugar-sweetened soft drinks are a significant source of calorie intake in children,” said Feng J. He, M.D., lead author of the study. “It has been shown that sugar-sweetened soft drink consumption is related to obesity in young people. However, it is unclear whether there is a link between salt intake and sugar-sweetened soft drink consumption.”Dr. He and colleagues analyzed data from the National Diet and Nutrition Survey (NDNS) ...
The Fast food, snacks and soft drinks
2008-02-25 18:14:00
Fast food Fast food is highly powered food that fools the stomach into calling for more, despite the fact that one giant burger is the caloric equivalent of an entire meal. The giant burger is not usually enough to fill the stomach of an adult person, so most people eat more than one and wash it down with soft drinks that are little more than sugared water. This is an unfortunate way of eating, since the body gets far more than it needs from burgers and soft drinks. The largely sedentary lifestyles led by most urban residents mean that the excess calories will certainly be stored as fat. Snacks Snacks are another threat to a healthy life by bringing in too much calories and by being too readily available when hunger strikes. -Health food option- Advertisement: read more
Less salt keeps children slimmer

This equals 250 calories that they would consume less, say British researchers. ...

Sugary soft drinks 'bigger gout risk than alcohol'
2008-02-01 12:36:00
Men who drink too many sugar sweetened soft drinks and fruit juices might be at a higher risk of developing gout.   In a new study, researchers have discovered an increased risk of gout associated with these drinks, which is even higher than certain types of alcohol—traditionally believed to be the major cause of the painful joint disease.   Gout is characterised by extreme pain and swelling, caused by excess uric acid in the blood (hyperuricaemia) leading to uric acid crystals collecting around the joints.   The study led by Hyon K Choi, from British Columbia University in Vancouver, and Gary Curhan, from Harvard Medical School, aimed at finding the relation between intake of sugar sweetened soft drinks and fructose (a simple sugar and the only carbohydrate known to increase uric acid levels) and the risk of gout.   In the study, one of the largest of its kind, researchers in United States and Canada examined more than 46,000 men aged over 40 with no previ...

What to use after drinking soft drinks
2008-01-30 16:05:00
If like me, you like soft drinks but get guilty about the effects they have on your teeth, what you could do is to take a cup full of water with a bit of baking soda inside and use it as a mouthwash. The alkali from the baking soda will help offset the acidity of the soft drink. Another use of baking soda is to add a tiny bit of it to the water you drink as it will make it alkaline and therefore healthier to drink.
High-caffeine Soft Drinks May Boost Heart Rates
2008-01-06 21:42:00
High-caffeine soft drinks may do more than give people a jolt of energy. They may also boost heart rates and blood pressure levels, researchers say. The results of a small study prompted the researchers to advise people who have high blood pressure or heart disease to avoid energy drinks because they could impact their blood pressure or change the effectiveness of their medications. The drinks generally have high levels of caffeine and taurine, an amino acid found in protein-rich foods like meat and fish that can affect heart function and blood pressure, the researchers say. They were unable to test the effect of higher levels of alcohol consumption, although drunkenness probably negates any positive effects on the brain. "We saw increases in both blood pressure and heart rate in healthy volunteers who were just sitting in a chair watching movies. They weren't exercising. They were in a resting state," - says James Kalus of Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, who led the st...

Soft Drinks Not So Soft When It Comes to Gaining Weight
2007-12-13 15:27:00
Soft drink consumption results in increased calorie intake, and reduces the consumption of fruits and milk, showed a recent study. Also, consumers of soft drinks have an increased risk of Type 2 diabetes, according to the same study. Soft drinks are one of the main factors that lead to obesity, although not the only one, according to existing data, stated study’s co-author Kelly Brownell. Sodas have other effects beside satisfying thirst. Soft drinks may increase hunger and make people crave for other foods because of their high level of sweetness. Researchers noticed that the calorie intake is actually greater than the amount of calories from soda, because the soft drinks makes people eat more. Soft drinks consumption is also responsible for lower intakes of calcium, fiber, fruits, and milk, showed the study. Soda consumption is strongly connected with Type 2 diabetes, study proved. The risk to develop diabetes is twice as big for women who consume one or more sodas per day, than...

Coca Cola readying self-chilling soft drinks?
2007-09-18 13:26:00
And you thought non-stick chewing gum was the heat. Turns out, Coca Cola may be plotting a new version of Sprite that actually chills itself upon opening. Apparently, the drink has to be kept at a specified temperature before being snapped up, and once the oh-so-thirsty consumer pops the top, "a mechanism inside creates ice made from the drink, so it is not diluted." Reportedly, the beverage
Diet and regular soft drinks increase risk for heart disease
2007-09-11 05:14:00
Drinking more than one soft drink daily whether its regular or diet may be linked to an increase in the risk factors for heart disease, Framingham scientists reported in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association. We were struck by the fact that it didnt matter whether it was a diet or regular soda that participants consumed, the association with increased risk was present, said Ramachandran Vasan, M.D., senior author of the Framingham Heart Study and professor of medicine at Boston University School of Medicine. In those who drink one or more soft drinks daily, there was an association of an increased risk of developing the metabolic syndrome........

2007-03-01 15:20:00
Hey, what do we have here? The world's first soft drink disguise as a multi-purpose cleaner? Or should it be a multi-purpose cleaner disguise as a soft drink!!!Besides that, If you pour Coke (yes, the soda) on a slab of pork, wait a little while, you will SEE WORMS crawl out of it.AND WE DRINK THIS STUFF! Coke & Pepsi ALARMING FACTS!!!The average pH of soft drinks, e.g. Coke, Pepsi is pH 3.4. This acidity is strong enough to dissolve teeth and bones! Our human body stops building bones at around the age of 30. After that it'll be dissolving about 8-18% of the bones each year through the urine, depending on the acidity of the food intake (acidity does not depend on the taste of the food, but on the ratio of potassium / calcium / magnesium / etc. to phosphorus). All the dissolved calcium compounds accumulate in the arteries, veins, skin tissue, and organs. This affects the functioning of the kidney (kidney stones). Soft drinks do not have any nutritional value (in terms of v...
