3 Ways to Save Big With Solar Energy
2008-03-26 14:31:00 Solar energy isn't just for electrical gurus or families able to make a large initial investment, it's for everyone. As the price of solar panels comes down and solar technology more efficient, solar energy is quickly becoming a way for the average family to save big on their monthly energy bills. Keep reading for 3 ways you can save a lot of money in your home with solar energy.1. Go solar in the garden. You pay nothing for electricity that comes from the sun, so why not use it in your home's sunniest spot - the garden? Several manufacturers offer solar-powered exterior lights that can illuminate porches, pathways, stairwells and gardens. Some are even bright enough to provide security lighting. These extremely efficient solar lights use electricity generated by sunlight falling on photovoltaic (solar) cells, which is then stored in a rechargeable battery for use at night. Separate units that have a self-contained solar panel usually need to be placed in a sunny spot during the da...

Shining Some Light on Solar Energy
2008-02-26 16:58:00 Without a doubt, solar energy is the way of the future. Solar energy production is an extremely simple process to understand. A solar, or photovoltaic, cell collects energy from the Sun. A solar cell is a semiconductor device that is constructed using photovoltaic materials. It contains no liquids or chemicals, and no moving parts. Solar cells convert sunlight into electricity.A solar panel generally consists of a series of individual cells, which are supported by a module that allows the cells to work in unison. The energy that is captured by the panel is stored in a battery. Solar panels generate direct current (DC) energy. Many solar energy systems have inverters in them which allow direct current (DC) electricity to be converted to alternating current (AC). Most consumer products such as appliances and electronics operate on AC current.Unless you have a vast expanse of land to house an array of solar panels, it is unlikely that you will be able to power your entire home with sol...

IOL: Solar energy breakthrough
2008-01-29 15:11:00 IOL: Solar energy breakthrough There is light at the end of the tunnel - and it's not being generated by Eskom but rather by revolutionary solar-powered technology developed by University of Johannesburg professor Vivian Alberts. He has spent the past 13 years developing highly advanced photovoltaic, or thin-film, solar panels that could be the solution to South Africa - and the world's - scramble for power. The panels are already being constructed by Johanna Solar Technology (JST) in Brandenburg, Germany, and will go on sale in Europe this year.According to JST, current solar modules convert only direct sunlight into electrical energy, but thin-film solar modules convert any light across the spectrum into electricity - generating power even under low-light conditionsLink

Sanyo Solar Ark – Solar Energy Generation Facility
2008-01-11 19:25:00 Sanyo is a well-known Japanese electronics company and a brand instantly recognizable worldwide. Sanyo’s Solar Ark is an ark shaped solar photovoltaic power generation facility located in the Gifu Prefecture of Japan. In my eyes the solar ark building is an architectural, engineering and scientific masterpiece. I just noted it as one of the places in Japan I would like to visit in a future trip to Japan as I want to see the solar lab and visit the solar museum housed within the facility. It’s free to enter the facility once it’s open and it’s boat-like features and name are obvious references to the biblical ark that Noah built to escape the floods. Infinite Solar Energy Unlike fossil fuels, bio fuels and other energy sources, the sun and it’s infinite solar energy isn’t going anywhere and the day the sun goes out is the day we are pretty much doomed as well. For more information and pictures visit the Solar Ark’s official website.

In future, the road heats you - solar energy stored in asphalt
2008-01-06 03:41:00 Some people have said that the U.S. highway system is "the silliest thing that any people ever did to themselves." Well, if we replaced at least some of the endless roads in this country with the solar-heat-storing asphalt developed by Ooms Avenhorn Holding BV, I think that would go a long way to making the highways a lot less silly. The AP had a story a few days ago on Ooms Avenhorn, a Dutch company that has found a way to use some of the heat that road naturally suck up to heat office buildings. The system (first imagined ten years ago) certainly seems efficient: one test patch - made up of 200 yards of road and a small parking lot - generated enough heat for 70 apartments in a four-story building. As the AP writes, this happened "under normally cloudy Dutch skies, with only a few days a year of truly sweltering temperatures."How does it work? I'm glad you asked. Water is run through pipes under the asphalt and heated from the warmth of the road. This heated water is then pumped ...

Solar gets competitive
2007-12-27 03:44:00 I can't get too excited about politics right now but this is exciting:Solar cheaper than coal and fallingNew developments in solar power make 'clean coal' look even dumber Let me be the last in the greenosphere to note that Nanosolar has shipped its first panels, and it's no exaggeration to say that this moment will likely be seen as a historical turning point.[.....]Nanosolar's claim is that power from their panels will pencil out at about $0.99 a watt. The implications are pretty stunning: "With a $1-per-watt panel," [CEO Martin Roscheisen] said, "it is possible to build $2-per-watt systems."According to the Energy Department, building a new coal plant costs about $2.1 a watt, plus the cost of fuel and emissions, he said.So what is Nanosolar and what do they do different? The New Dawn of Solar The company produces its PowerSheet solar cells with printing-press-style machines that set down a layer of solar-absorbing nano-ink onto metal sheets as thin as aluminum foil, so the pa...
