Peel-and-stick solar panels.
2008-05-12 19:32:00 We don't think it's as easy as your everyday peel-and-stick adhesive bumper sticker, but just the same. It sounds like a major improvement from the tedious drilling and constructing that goes into the installation of ordinary solar panels. The Lumeta PowerPly solar panels are glued in place on the roof, using adhesives normally used in roofing. So far the method/product is only available for commercial buildings, but we hope an application for private homes will be in the market soon.

2008-05-06 23:52:00 Developers may get grants of up to S$1m when installing solar panels - Singapore By Ng Baoying, Â SINGAPORE: The Economic Development Board (EDB) has unveiled more details of the Solar Capability Scheme, aimed at spurring demand for clean technology and building up expertise in the new industry. The S$20 million scheme was first announced in Parliament in April by Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry, S Iswaran. The EDB said it expects to fund up to 100 projects. Under the scheme, new buildings need a minimum Green Mark Gold standard to qualify for a 30 to 40 per cent grant, while existing buildings will be assessed on a case by case basis. Ko Kheng Hwa, Managing Director, Economic Development Board, said: “We expect interest, and this interest should grow as greater awareness seeps into the industry. Today, the very early adopters are already implementing some form of solar energy systems. “So with this scheme, we are partially offsetting their initial capit...

Qatar Environment: Waste, Solar Panels and Electricity
2008-04-02 13:54:00 After writing my recent post on environment in Qatar, I was impressed to see that Qatar is now planning to start producing electricity from waste. According to an article in the Gulf Times today, a waste plant which will be opened next year will produce enough electricity (40 mega watts) both to power all the plant's needs and those of its 400 employees and their families. The electricity will be generated through the process of composting organic domestic waste, which can then be used as fertilizer. In total, the plant hopes to recycle 50% of domestic rubbish. The story follows on from news in February that reports Qatar is considering building one of the largest solar power complexes in the world to meet soaring electricity demand, which is predicted to increase by up to four times in the next 30 years. The solar farm would have a capacity of 3,500 megawatts. Qatar is also considering additional energy from a nuclear power plant. Also see Qatar's Natural History by author France...

SOCAL EDISON WANTS TO COVER CALIFORNIA ROOFTOPS IN SOLAR PANELS
2008-03-27 20:34:00 Filed under: Misc. Gadgets We've seen a few massive solar farms pop up out west, but it looks like Southern California Edison is taking a different approach: instead of cluttering up the desert, the company plans to build a distributed solar array on the rooftops of commercial buildings throughout SoCal. The plan is to spend $875M over five years to cover about two square miles of rooftop with the panels, which will alleviate stress on the grid by generating around 250 megawatts of juice, as much as a small power plant. That's enough to light up 162,000 homes, but it's still a little short of the record 280-megawatt Solana installation planned in Arizona -- come on, Cali, let's see a little fight. DIY Solar Panels
2008-03-17 16:00:00 This is not your ordinary DIY job; these panels are made from discarded and broken solar panels that can be found down at the tip or any other place that may take trash. But what the people who have thrown these away do not realise is that these panels are still ok to use. Sure they don’t as clean and shiny as new ones, but they are free and do work! Tools needed: To start making solar panels from broken solar cells you need a few things. 15-25 watt soldering iron Light duty 60/40 electronics rosin core solder (radio shack $5.00 for a roll). You can use a silver solder, but I think it’s too expensive, and the difference in resistance is minimal. So I just use regular old electronics solder. Multimeter Pencil eraser Solar tabbing pre tinned ribbing (ebay 100 feet is like $20 bucks) A good flat sturdy working surface ( I use a piece of glass, but whatever you have will do) Source [Instructables] 20 bucks, alternative energy, pencil eraser, piece of glass, Solar Power, s...

Solar panels that work in the dark
2008-02-07 19:31:00 The biggest problem with the sun is that it's not always around. And during the winter months it behaves like an absentee landlord and shows up only for a few hours. Unfortunately, solar panels must contend with this erratic behavior if they are to save us from ourselves. If only there was a panel that worked in the dark...Well, guess what? It looks like we might now be on the brink of technology that effectively deals with sun's temperament. Thanks to the wonders of nanotechnology and, in no small part the efforts of Steven Novack of the Idaho National Laboratories, there are now foldable panels that operate at 80 percent efficiency. Conventional photovoltaics yield only about 40 percent. But as EcoGeek explains, "the surface of the material is printed with miniscule nano-antennae that capture infra-red radiation, the kind that the sun puts out in abundance, and is even available at night." Scientists are still working on converting the light into those hard working electro...

How To Have A Solar-heated Home Without Solar Panels
2007-12-21 15:03:00 Would you like your new house to be warm in the winter and cool in the summer without the use of air-conditioning, heating, or even solar power panels? You can. It's called passive solar, and is all about how you design your home and where you place it on your property. The first thing to understand about passive solar is that it doesn't have anything to do with solar panels, photovoltaic cells, or any other technology. The whole idea is to build and situation your home in such a way as to harness a maximum amount of the sun's energy in the winter, while blocking the sun's rays from heating your home in the summer. And you do it all simply by understanding how the Sun moves where you live. How Does Passive Solar Work? There are three main elements that make a passive solar home different from a conventional home: South-facing windows; a ledge of a certain length and angle above those windows; and a mass-wall. The ledge above the windows is short enough and placed at such an angle...

Polymer solar panels that are cheaper, lighter and greener
2007-12-01 03:09:00 Don't run yet! I'm the first who would like to cover my car with film and get it powered to run on photovoltaic energy, but that option isn't hear yet. New research could make it a little bit closer, though. Physicist Neil Greenham from Cambridge University's Cavendish Laboratory had been researching polymer light emitting diodes (LEDs), used for displays in some televisions, MP3 players and mobile phones. But then he joined a research group trying to use similar polymers to generate electricity from light. Now, his work has resulted an organic solar cell that doesn't use expensive silicon. Silicon-made photovoltaic panels are expensive, heavy and not very green to make. Nevertheless, this technology has a drawback: very low efficiency. While state-of-the-art silicon panels can yield 40 percent efficiency, commercially available panels usually get about 15 percent. Greenham's target is 5 percent, which could power many types of devices with a cheaper cost. To make things more ...
RV Solar Panels: Working Towards No Emissions
2007-11-16 23:20:00 Nil or at least minimal emissions – this is the aim of vehicle companies nowadays, many of which having had expressed their concern about how carbon and fossil fuels have so far caused grave damage to our environment. All I can say is – it is just about time. Or has it been an otherwise good decision that has all but come too late?If anyone would really desire less damaging emissions, then the ordinary consumer and vehicle owner can do their part. If home solar panel is ideal power alternative source for the homes, then the RV solar panel is a great compliment, if not replacement for the conventional fuel generator. We all know how immense and large scale the emissions are, which in turn can be very damaging to the air that we breathe these generators create. Definitely, in the grand and noble design of saving the world from further damage brought about by these generators, we can count on alternative sources of energy such as the sun, water and wind. The most popular source is th...

Do electric cars, hybrids and solar panels kill third world babies?
2007-09-30 21:19:00 There is a lot of debate about the real world economics of electric cars, hybrids and other alternative power-trains relative to a conventional gas or diesel fueled car. Over at Electronic Design News, Paul Rako has taken a different approach to evaluating the value proposition. He hearkens back to the old TV commercials with Sally Struthers urging viewers to donate money to help feed starving children. Using that as the basis for a virtual currency unit he calls the Struther which is defined as the cost of keeping a child alive for five years he calculates the cost of various options. Some of his calculations are a bit dubious however such as the assumption that the battery in a hybrid only last five years. The idea that spending nearly $100K on a Tesla roadster will sacrifice the lives of fifty children is also questionable. After all, any new technology usually comes in at a high initial price that is necessary to seed a market. Where Rako's calculations make perhaps a little mo...
