They said the Chicago Park District told them that Soldier Field and the surrounding area is to be preserved strictly as a memorial to war veterans. If there was a statue of a World War I doughboy outside Soldier Field, a statue of a football player alongside would seem inappropriate. But it's the edifice itself that's a lasting war memorial, the columns in particular. That's all they preserved when Soldier Field was rebuilt.
