Somali Christian Martyred
2008-08-03 23:12:00 A Somali Christian has paid the ultimate price for his faith. Hussein, the 28-year-old victim, had converted from the Muslim faith to Christianity. Jonathan Racho of International Christian Concern says he was confronted by Islamic extremists who demanded to know if he faces Mecca when he prays, which is required of Muslims. "Hussein says he doesn't face Mecca when he prays because his God is omnipresent and he can face anywhere to pray," Racho recounts the incident. "[T]he extremists were very much enraged by his comments, and they killed him." Upon learning that her husband had been shot to death, Hussein's wife went into premature labor and delivered a stillborn baby. Hussein had been working as a teacher and was described as extremely successful in evangelizing the community.SOURCE

Somali Jihadists Clarify Stance on the United States
2008-04-16 19:19:00 For many months there was a debate inside the State Department and elsewhere in the policy community on how seriously to take the _jihadist_ threat from al-Shabaad al-Mujahideen Movement in Somalia, and whether the group was really linked to al Qaeda. Ultimately, the group was designated by the Treasury Department as a terrorist entity in February. This was the right decision, in my opinion. What I find interesting is how unable we often are to believe people when they say they want to kill us, even...(read more)

Somali Islamic Radicals Sieze French Yacht
2008-04-06 13:24:00 Well, yeah, there are a number of news sources wh0 call them “Pirates”. I’ll get to that. Meanwhile, a report on the site of my hometown’s Channel 10: (AP) PARIS - France’s military is keeping close tabs on a French luxury yacht seized by pirates off Somalia’s coast, and officials hope to avoid using force to free the 30 crew members, the prime minister said Saturday. Attackers stormed the 288-foot Le Ponant on Friday as it returned without passengers from the Seychelles, in the Indian Ocean, toward the Mediterranean Sea, officials with French maritime transport company CMA-CGM said. French Prime Minister Francois Fillon said officials were “following the hostage situation minute by minute.” “Our priority is to protect the lives of the people on board,” Fillon said while visiting the town of Le Mans. “All channels of discussion are open to try to resolve this case by trying not to use force.” As to the title of “...

Somali Islamists say U.S. terror listing forges unity
2008-03-22 02:00:00 Islamist insurgents in Somalia say their inclusion on a U.S. terrorism list will help recruiting and has spurred them to strengthen ties with other groups blacklisted by Washington. "We were not terrorists," rebel commander Mukhtar Ali Robow told Reuters by telephone from an undisclosed location. "But now we've been designated ... the United States" href="http://www.reuters.com/ar-ticle/newsOne/idUSL211304952008-0321">we have been forced to seek out and unite with any Muslims on the list against the United States," he said late on Thursday. Yes, that's right. We're "forcing" terrorist groups to unite with one another. If only we'd take them off the list, they'd turn their backs on other terrorist organizations that they've forged alliances with. It all makes PERFECT SENSE NOW! Do these idiots really think anyone's going to buy that line of bullshit? Somalia's Western-backed interim government and its Ethiopian military allies have faced an Iraq-style insurgency of ...

Cat Breeding Profile: Somali
2008-02-29 15:38:00 The Somali is a breathtaking cat to behold. It bears an uncanny resemblance to a little fox, with its large ears, masked face, full ruff and bushy tail. The Somali?s wild, feral look is what immediately draws fascinated attention.Somalis are intelligent cats, and while active, they have soft voices and are usually quiet. They communicate with human family members through soft mews and possess a charming trill. They are extroverts and very social. Possessed with a zest for life, they love to play, solicit nuzzles and pats, and thrive on human companionship. Somalis have bursts of energy several times a day, at which time they will take off through the house, jumping into the air. They toss balls and toys in the air, fetch them back and begin the game anew. Tail and back arched, the Somali will run sideways like a monkey, and even hold objects and food the way a monkey does. Adept at opening cupboards and drawers, Somalis sometimes hide inside their secret areas. Many Somalis can mani...

2008-02-28 16:00:00 I have an article in the Middle East Times today examining rifts between the ARS (Alliance for the Re-Liberation of Somalia) and the Shabab wing of the Somali insurgency. Entitled, "A Message to the Mujahideen in Particular and the Muslims in General," Amriki's communiqué describes the ARS (which he continues to refer to as "the Islamic Courts") as nationalist...(read more)

Somali
2008-02-08 23:25:00 DescriptionThe Somali cat breed is a longhair offshoot of the Abyssinian cat breed.Head: wedge-shaped but slightly rounded,Ears: large, pointed, broadEyes: large; dark-rimmed, as with AbyssiniansBody: medium-longLegs: in proportion to bodyPaws: oval-shaped with five in front and four in backTail: characteristically bushy tailCoat: longhair and traditionally, red or "ruddy" colored; however, other color varieties have also been developed; tabby patterns not allowedPersonalityWhile this may not qualify as a behavior per se, it is worth noting that Somalis are fairly unique in how they shed fur. They shed or "blow" a large amount of fur once or twice a year rather than day by day.HistoryThe origins of the Somali breed are fairly straightforward. Like so many other breeds, the Somali breed is a naturally-occurring offshoot of an existing breed, in this case, the Abyssinian. The Abyssinian is a shorthair breed, yet litters would often have a longhair cat which did not fit the breed stand...

Silent Voices ? Extraordinary Literary Talent from Five British Somali Writ
2008-01-19 11:22:00 Silent Voices is anthology of contemporary writing by five British Somali writers who powerfully express their views of being Somali in Britain, covering some of the controversial issues that have impacted each of their lives. The book was born as part of Monsoon Press’s Hidden Voices Programme funded by the Arts Council and has enabled previously unknown writers to product this fascinating and touching collection of extraordinary literary pieces. After more than a century of Somali presence in the UK, there is still a lack of knowledge about who they are. Many are misrepresented and the assumption is made that all are asylum seekers, are involved in crime gangs or are uneducated and unskilled. Silent Voices attempts to dispel some of these bigoted perceptions by presenting to the world a wealth of hidden talent from five writers who find expression through their eloquent prose and poetry. One of the contributors, 33-year-old Zahrah Awaleh, was born and raised in England. Zahr...

Somalia: What the News Failed to Report
2007-11-18 11:13:00 by Ramzy Baroud The people of Somalia are enduring yet another round of suffering as Ethiopian forces wreck havoc in the capital, Mogadishu. Apparently in response to an attack on one of its units, and the dragging of a soldier’s mutilated body through the city’s streets, an Ethiopian mortar reportedly exploded in Mogadishu’s Bakara market on November 9, killing eight civilians. A number of Somalis were also found dead the following day, some believed to have been rounded up by Ethiopian forces the night before. Nearly 50 civilians have reportedly been killed and 100 wounded in the two-day fighting spree between fighters loyal to the Union of Islamic Courts and government forces and their Ethiopian allies. A report, issued by Human Rights Watch, chastised both Ethiopian troops and ‘insurgents’ for the bloodletting. Peter Takirambudde, the watchdog’s Africa director, was quoted as saying, "The international community should condemn these attacks and hold combatants accountabl...

Somali Fighting Continues– 80 Dead, Hundreds Wounded
2007-11-13 04:55:00 Fighting continues in Somalia’s capital as Ethiopian and Islamic forces clash over control in the nation’s largest city. The number of dead ranges from 60-80 and hospitals report at least 250 wounded. The Ethiopian army was enraged when one of their soldiers was killed and his body dragged through the streets to cheers. This initiated a rampage of fury as Ethiopian soldiers fired indiscriminately at civilians, many of whom were trying to flee for safety. A local elder, Ali Muse Mohamed described the scene: “It is a very gruesome scene. They indiscriminately shot innocent civilians who were fleeing the fighting.” There are reports of many children being killed and at least 114,000 have left Mogadishu in the past week. This brings the total of displaced people since the Ethiopian invasion to a total of 850,000. There have been no protests from American authorities even though the United States provided naval and air support for the Ethiopians. Many conservativ...

More Fresh Hell Served Up on the Terror War's Somalia Front
2007-11-04 22:21:00 by Chris Floyd There is more travail in Somalia, the land that time forgot – but the War on Terror did not. As reported copiously here, Somalia is the third "regime change" operation of Bush's globe-devouring Terror War. (Check out at least some of the stories gathered here to get an idea of the death and suffering spawned by the American-backed upheaval.) This blood-red op was conducted largely by proxy, through the invading armies of Ethiopian dictator Meles Zenawi and Somali warlords on the CIA payroll. But Bush, as we all know, is a hands-on kinda guy, so there was direct U.S. participation in the carnage as well, in the form of bombing raids on fleeing civilians, rendition of refugees (including American citizens) to Ethiopian torture chambers, and the use of what could only be called American death squads in the aftermath of the war. As we noted here in a June post about a very pro-Pentagon article in Esquire: Barnett reveals that the gunship attac...
