2008-06-03 02:57:00
A few months ago while lunching at Le Bernardin in New York, I had a brief but illuminating conversation with the Sommelier, a certain Aldo Sohm. Little did I know that a few months later he'd win the title of Best Sommelier in the World in a competition organized by the Italian World Sommelier Association.

Sommelier India Visits New York
2008-05-18 18:07:00
Senior members of the Sommelier India team recently visited the USA on a whirlwind trip of the East Coast and are happy to report from this outpost of Sommelier India magazine that the US has a thriving wine culture of which the Indian diaspora is an integral part. What's more there is tremendous interest and curiosity about Indian wines. The only Indian wine we actually saw on the shelves, however, was from Sula.(Did we miss something there? Château Indage and Grover, do you export to the US?) A new Indian restaurant with a commendable wine list was Amma, the current hot spot with young professionals.

Inder Raj Ahluwalia takes the reader on a journey to Barossa, the famous wine region of South Australia while Alok Chandra interviews South Australia's premier in an exclusive for Sommelier India. Raghu Bahadur shares with us his experiences in shopping for wine in the Arabian Gulf and India. Not surprisingly, he finds shopping for liquor an uphill task. Sommelier India interviews Rt. Hon. Mike Rann, Premier of South Australia
2008-03-29 20:57:00
?I have been impressed by the rapid growth of the Indian economy, and the booming indian wine market?. South Australia, with its capital at Adelaide, produces 50% of all Australian wines: its 563 wineries made 724 million litres in 2007 (out of a total of 1.4 billion) and exported wine worth A$ 1.4 billion (Rs. 5,180 crore). Its wine regions are legion: the Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, McLaren Vale and Coonawarra are home to many of Australia?s best-known wineries. These include Penfolds, Wolf Blass, Petuluma, Shaw & Smith, Torbreck, Grosset, Majella, d?Arenberg, Hardys, and Sepplt (to name just a few). Loxton winery which Champagne Indage bought is also based in South Australia. The Premier of South Australia, Mike Rann, who was in India in mid-March 2008 leading a 26-strong delegation of businessmen and industrialists to promote investment, education and migration, spoke to Alok Chandra in an exclusive interview for Sommelier India about wines from his state, the wine market...

International Sommelier Guild Level 1 achieved!
2008-02-11 16:10:00
I firmly believe that education is an important part in the development of ones career. I also hope that future employers hold the same belief system.  As one runs up against obstacles in the work place, it shows you areas that you can improve. As I stated in a previous post “Take charge of the Wine” I mentioned that I would be enrolling in a sommelier course.  Well, I have just completed it!  Yay!  I must say,  I have certainly improved my confidence when speaking about wine.  The course was both comprehensive and intensive.  The International Sommelier Guild has a total of four levels-  An overview of major grape varieties, regions, tasting & serving with bits here and there on cellaring. A much deeper look into those issues above but with a stronger emphasis on tasting. This is the diploma level-  It’s a tough program delving deep into wine evaluating and wine menu building using and building on everything learned in level 1 & 2.  When you...

Prosecco and Sabers ? Who?s your Daddy!?!
2007-07-20 23:58:00
A one-line headline on the newswires caught my attention:?Winemaker Gianluca Bisol, the group will gather in the northern town of Treviso at the weekend to display their skill at opening champagne bottles by slicing off the top with a saber.?The Bisol family makes a few really good Prosecco wines. Many know that the method of making many Prosecco wines is the Charmat not the Champagne method. It seemed reasonable to think that anything having to do with Bubbly would interest Gianluca Bisol. He is involved in most of the wine and educational associations in Veneto.Opening a bottle of Champagne or Prosecco with a saber seemed a bit sensationalist. I assumed that they were talking about some new bottle opener called the saber. I was amazed to find that it is exactly what it says it is, open a bottle of Champagne with a sword. There is a worldwide association of Saber Rattlers. The association counts 30,000 members in 12 countries. The newest chapter of the group is opening in Treviso.T...
