How long do songbirds usually live?
2008-03-27 04:36:00 Songbirds live an average of five years. They lay their first eggs when they are less than one year old. The eggs often hatch after just ten days (which is fast in comparison with the eggs of the albatross which take around eighty days). Because the eggs hatch so soon, the hatchlings are born blind ...
The Songbirds: Vol 5
2007-10-21 12:29:00 After a hiatus, here's a new instalment of The Songbirds. Given the name of this series, it seems odd that I've never thought of uploading the song that gave inspired title. So here, in its original incarnation and as covered by a previous Songbird nominee: Fleetwood Mac - Songbird.mp3 Rosie Thomas - Songbird.mp3Kate EarlI really hope Kate Earl's fine 2005 debut Fate Is the Hunter will not be the final offering by this engaging Alaskan LA-based songbird. Critics tend to compare Earl with Fiona Apple, without the neurosis. Not being a great fan of Apple, I am inclined to differ. Though vocally they are not dissimilar, Earl plays with different genres, from guitar-folk to piano-driven ballads to what one might call folk-torchsong and folk-blues. Joni Mitchell and Carole King are obvious influences. "Cry Sometimes" is a slowed-down AOR number of the kind those who like the interminably dull Norah Jones ought to hear just to realise just how deficient Jones' music is. The critics po...
Book Review: Songbirds Are Free by P. M. Terrell
2007-09-16 21:23:00 History is an interesting subject, we could learn so much about our modern life if only we took the time to understand the past. I can think of almost no conflict that was simple, the movies tend to use good versus bad, in fact even the way history is taught in our schools has been ...

The first thing that most people think of when they hear the word “steroids” is baseball players who rely on these chemicals to increase their muscle mass and thereby improve their athletic performance. But recently, a small songbird that I studied for my dissertation work, Gambel’s white-crowned sparrow, Zonotrichia leucophrys gambelii, has shown scientists that steroids trigger the growth of specific brain regions that support birdsong. These regions, known as song control nuclei, increase in overall size and add new neurons every spring under the influence of the naturally-occuring steroid, testosterone, when these birds sing to attract mates and defend territories. Additionally, and perhaps most interesting, the researchers found that this increased growth in song control nuclei w...
Songbirds in the Forest
2007-03-22 18:35:00 Eating out:The day my mom came to visit, we went to Songbirds Rainforest Retreat, a luxurious rainforest spa retreat on Mount Tamborine in the Gold Coast Hinterland. We had no intentions to stay, or to pamper ourselves with indulgent massages or the works. We were purely there to sample the highly acclaimed and awarded food at the restaurant, Songbirds in the Forest. The retreat was a good 20 minute drive from the Pacific Motorway exit, but it was a drive worth the while. Upon entering the sprawling grounds of the retreat, one immediately feels a sense of lightness and peace. The crisp mountain air, combined with the exotic balinese decor and landscaping, plus the surrounding tranquility all culminate to send positive vibes through one's bones. We just knew that it; we were in for something good.Sure enough we were! The restaurant is flanked on both sides by ledges spliiling over into lush tropical gardens, where the resident bush turkeys and a whole array of other wild birds come t...

Politics is Puppetry, and Songbirds are Cool
2007-03-20 19:19:00 Hi. I’ve been on sabattical for several months. Not the classic sabattical, because I’ve been working on my new job. Its a pretty cool high-end software job, and I sell the applications. I made a decision to let go of the political writing, because its just a waste of time. I hate ...

Migrant Songbirds and Brain Size
2006-12-01 14:40:05 Birdscope has an interesting and topical article on migrant songbirds and brain size that I found worth noting: Brainy Birds Stay Behind, or ‘Resident birds have bigger brains than migrants, study finds.’ Resident songbirds have larger brains than long-distance migrants, according to the study by McGill University researcher Daniel Sol and colleagues (Proceedings of the Royal Society, June 2005). The researchers also found that the resident birds were more inventive foragers, suggesting a possible link between bigger brains and the ability to find food in northern winters. That’s a completely counter-intuitive finding, I would say. I had thought that the apparent memory requirements of migrants for their routes and destinations would include not just specialized brain structures, but added brain mass. On the other hand, a sizable amount of research suggests that migration is governed not by cognitive brain function, but by subconscious instinct. Similarly, resid...
