I like the Jimmy Smith version better but this is great!

On August 19, 1997 we brought Sonny home to live with us and ten years later to the day we sent Sonny to live in God's home.We had him euthanized a little after 7pm this past Sunday. It was such a gift to him and to me that he went so peacefully.Sunday was a very hard day. If you've been following along you know that Sonny had a nasal tumor that was slowly claiming his life. On Saturday I made the very difficult decision to end his suffering. Ironically the date of his passing was the ten year anniversary of when he became our dog. I believe it was a divine intervention of the universe sending me a sign that I had chosen the right time.We spent our last day with him by treating him to all the things he loved. He ate like a king and received lots of petting which was his favorite thing of all.At one point I got a chance to spend some time alone with him. I took him out to the pool for his last swim but rather than swim he sat in the water on the step. I think he was afraid to go ou...
Today life comes full circle

This is a difficult post to write. I've been wrestling with the idea of putting Sonny to sleep for weeks now. I had prayed that he would go on his own so I wouldn't have to be the one to decide but that's not going to happen without some suffering. It's time. It's been time. But every time he wagged his tail, took a dip in the pool, or got excited for a treat I got a false sense that he wasn't ready to go. I would overlook that he sleeps all day unless we engage him, he hasn't barked in months, and that his snoring has gotten worse from the tumor growing. He is most likely suffering much more than he's letting on. His coughing and wheezing has worsened over the weekend. Our plan was to euthanize him on Wednesday but I have finally reached the point where watching him deteriorate is more painful than letting him go. So I put on my big girl panties and called my best friend who is a veterinarian. She and another vet friend will come out to the house tonight and help us ease S...
I lied, I'm back to depressing commentary

Our dog Sonny is not looking so good the last couple of days. He sleeps most of the day and doesn't seem to find much pleasure in anything. He still loves to be petted but doesn't get excited and wag his tail at the slightest bit of attention like he used to. Normally he follows the kids around the house so he doesn't miss something fun but he rarely does that now. His highlight of the day is when the mailman comes to the door. We have the best mailman. He brings up our trashcans and treats for Sonny. Now that he knows Sonny is dying he makes a point to come to the door and visit Sonny several times a week. Sonny isn't running to the door like he used to but he does get up and greet the mailman with his tail wagging. Funny how little things like that make me happy. It is heartbreaking to see him like this. His nose has a slow trickle of bloody drainage and he's blind in the eye closest to the tumor. He stopped eating dog food two days ago but will eat eggs, salami, and fast foo...
Sonny Boy

Last night I was getting frazzled.. picked up a 20gal (might be 30 not sure) from someone giving it away on Freecycle (I love freecycle) for possible Hermit Crabs. Got this new collie boy in to rescue. Had to take back the practice flyball box to the old team… and ugh, just ran around too much. Sonny is a doll. I didn’t have time to get pictures. His left eye looks gooey so I’m taking him to the vet on Monday. Oh that reminds me I have to ask if he is up on vaccinations and heart worm tested. If not we will get all that done. I am pretty sure he is neutered, he has a lot of mats on his underbelly so I hope a couple of them were not boy parts. I didn’t have time to get pictures of him but I’ll get those up as soon as I can. He’s a sweet boy. Probably needs a teeth cleaning, too. Sable and white, likes the couch, and a love bug. I spent an hour last night brushing him out. His mats are only really on his belly, fortunately. His back and sides a...
Heaven just got another angel

Jack passed away at 1:30 this morning. I'm so very sad. Knowing I would have supportive comments to read is what got me out of bed today. Thank you my blogging friends.I haven't told the kids yet. I'm such a coward.Out of the blue this morning Madeline says, "I didn't like when so and so talked about us getting a new puppy after Sonny dies.""Why?" I asked."I don't want Sonny to die" she replied. This is going to be hard.

It's a tumor

I'm so sad. Sonny, our beloved dog has a nasal tumor. He presented with a cough in March that did not respond to two rounds of antibiotics. Then around the end of May he started bleeding from the nose. He was put back on antibiotics and the bleeding stopped for about a week. We checked his blood counts, clotting factors, tick titres, and chest x-rays. Everything came back normal for an old dog. Skull x-rays showed a mass of some sort in the left side. I prayed that the mass was a fungus or infection but and MRI and rhinoscopy performed yesterday showed a tumor. I won't know until Monday when the biopsy comes back what kind of carcinoma we are dealing with. The tumor is very aggressive and quite large. Radiation may be an option. I was all for the radiation until I found out that the closest hospital that offers animal radiation is two hours away. That would mean we would have to leave Sonny at that hospital for at least four weeks. We could bring him home on weekends but with four...
