Derrick Rose update [sort of]
2009-10-11 21:08:00 Well I just returned from Bulls practice which was somewhat of a bust, because of a miscommunication there was no media session scheduled today as practice became a film session. However, I did see James Johnson and Derrick Rose walk out of the building and both were walking normally without a limp (Johnson appeared to injury his ankle at the end of last night's game and Rose obviously has the Achilles thing).I didn't notice Derrick wearing a walking boot, but I admit I didn't take a close look. I figured it would have been obvious enough that I would have noticed it without trying to look, but I failed you in that area this time. ...
Essentially, getting older is sort of a bitch.
2009-09-12 16:53:00 Two months from my fortieth birthday, I’ve never looked or felt better. Considering my high school and college years, this is pretty remarkable. I used to scare people with oversized t-shirts, an abrasive attitude, and hair that could withstand fifty-knot winds. But now, after discovering exercise, obtaining a decent wardrobe allowance and growing my hair *down* instead of *out*, I’ve finally become a bit of a babe. So naturally something’s wrong. One could make an argument that Katie’s Super-Healthy status took a dive four years ago when my platelets hauled ass. More recently, I faced my first abnormal pap smear. Last Monday, I dealt with the indignity of a colposcopy without cocktails. Then, after several days of worrying and revising my eulogy, I got a call from my gynecologist’s medical assistant. She said no signs of cancerous cells can be seen up in my lovely. “The results are essentially negative.” Blink. Blink. Blink. “Essentia...

Hurricane Felicia's coming... sort of...
2009-08-08 00:02:00 We've got our first hurricane "threat" of the season going on right now. Hurricane Felicia made it to a category 4 hurricane a day or two back, was down to a category 2 by last night or this morning and will likely be a good sized rain cloud by the time it reaches Hawaii. I think they're predicting it to be a tropical depression. Sounds like larger surf on the east side of the island is likely on Sunday. We'll see if anything comes of it on our side of the island when it passes. In years past that I've lived here, "hurricane days" have been gorgeous and good days for diving.I've got a couple days off after tonight's dive, and I don't expect a whole lot of phone calls 'til this thing passes. I may go shorediving Monday morning to take some pictures if the water's flat. I'm running low on unposted photos, haven't carried the camera on dives in some time, so a day on my own might be fun. Here's something you don't see a whole lot of in Hawaii... the photo above is of ...

2009-04-29 06:37:00 Rick Springfield will be talking to strangers when he plays an ’80s teen idol on 4 episodes of Showtime’s Californication! According to EW’s Michael Ausiello he will be playing “an actor who experienced huge fame in the 80’s to play themselves as a now down-on his-luck-ex-celebrity waiting tables to get by.” Not much more is known, but with some of the sh!t that they have done on the show, the one thing we can guarantee is it will be a side of Rick Springfield we have never seen. And I can’t wait to see it!!! Maybe we will see his butt again like we did in Hard to Hold, but then again it would be hard for him to hold the bum that he had almost 25 years ago today! But I would Love Somebody at Californication if we did see again!!! SIDE NOTE: Stand Up is one of my favorite songs of his and I can’t believe I found a live version of it from 1985. Plus it totally works for this post!

Bill Maxwell: Eric Holder is Right (sort Of)
2009-03-02 13:47:00 Bill Maxwell, St. Petersburg Times, says “On race, blacks are cowards too:” On matters of race, most blacks run away from introspection, and we do not like to hear others publicly remind us of our responsibilities to ourselves. One problem we should openly talk about, but run from, is the high number of black children born out of wedlock. Depending on whose numbers we use, between 70 percent to 80 percent of black children are born to single mothers. Well Bill Cosby is not a coward, and he has the arrrow wounds to prove it. Oooh Yay, It's Sort Of A Holiday
2008-11-23 17:44:00 While the title says it's a holiday, please remember this was written last January. While I'm sure somewhere in the world today is a holiday, it is not the meaningless holiday I am honoring below. Putting this up today was easier than writing something new, with all the decorating and Christmas CD making an eggnog consumptioning going on around my homestead this weekend.Enjoy and happy Sunday, unless you are reading this later in the week because then wishing you a happy Sunday on a day when you are most likely working away in the office would just be cruel. Although, if you are reading this at work then I guess you really aren't working and then it serves you right. Yeah, I'm kidding. We all know work is the best place to get your blogging done. I mean not for me personally, for everybody else...It?s that time for another useless holiday. You know, one of these days I am just going to sit down, invent my own holiday and use this blog to tirelessly promote it. In fact, maybe one...

President-Elect Obama Quotes CLB In Acceptance Speech. Well Sort Of.
2008-11-05 07:10:00 "To those who would tear the world down --- we'll defeat you. To those who seek peace and security -- we support you." President-Elect Barack Obama, During his acceptance speech I like this division of countries and it corresponds with the argument I have often made as to why the United States should seek to work with China, not against it. Most countries in the world (please don't anyone ask me to distinguish between the citizenry and the government here) want progress. They want tomorrow to be better than today. They want a strong economy and a productive work force. They want cars, televisions, and iPods. China is one of those countries. I am not calling on the United States to ignore China as a security threat, but I am saying we should support those countries that manifest a greater desire to build than to "tear the world down." And through our doing so, we will help defeat countries like Iran and North Korea, which are, at least for now, more committed...

Land Reform. It's A Coming. Sort Of?
2008-10-14 06:54:00 Not sure why the huge interest in this subject, but I have probably received more emails/comments asking if I am going to write about this than probably anything else ever. The "this" is China's expected changes to rural land laws. I was going to write about it after speaking with some of our food business clients who work with China, but I figure doing so now will stop the emails, so here goes. Forbes Magazine did a nice piece on this, and not just because they extensively quoted CLB's own Steve Dickinson in it. The article is entitled, "China Farmers Granted More Freedom On Land Rights," and it calls the anticipated laws a "major initiative to marketize China's countryside." It describes the reforms as follows: The reforms, approved at a Oct. 9-12 party meeting led by President Hu Jintao, still need to be greenlighted in March by the National People's Congress, China's legislative body, which has traditionally been a rubber-stamp institution. Land will remain owned by "t...

Good News About Real Estate in the Mercury? Well Sort Of
2008-09-03 03:47:00 Long-time readers know that I do my newspaper reading online via the New York Times. In a throwback to a quieter time, I do subscribe to the San Jose Mercury News on Sundays as we like to peruse the articles and share witty banter about the headlines over morning coffee. In an interesting twist, I also receive the paper on other random days of the week . . . but I digress. When I picked up the paper on Labor Day (Second Sunday?), the headline “Home Sales Raising Hopes” bravely attempted to be seen over the front and center HURRICANE HITS GOP main headline. What’s this I thought, positive news about the housing market from the Merc? Really? I have grown weary and wary of the Merc and its drumbeat of foreclosure of the week, gloom and doom, and reinforcing that real estate is local, and my market in Palo Alto varies just a bit from south San Jose. If you don’t believe me, visit Altos Research and compare the chart for median home price over the last couple of y...

Feeling Heavy in a Zen Sort of Way
2008-06-27 07:23:00 I go through moments where I am sitting in the chair of emotions and then shortly, visited by lengths of peace. Disappointment and sadness punctuated the hours. The practical side of myself looked at these moments as ego based and in the peace of detachment....I look to the future.I expect a miracle.A miracle? Like a walking across the water miracle? No... but something wonderfully unexpected, gracefully creative, captivatingly honest and inspiring. That's my dream. It makes walking away from anything less, easier.Shall I let myself be free into the unknown to meet truth and my dream or shall I accept less and live a life caged in mediocrity and hopelessness? Sadness had exhausted me over the week. It stole the wind out of my week's dear victories and joys. But I remember the moment when a clearing came to pass. 2008-06-08 12:05:00 What a long, terrible headline that was, huh? But what's a guy to do when he's got a couple bullet points of his own, stuff that our esteemed Mike Bock didn't cover, that he wants to throw up for our devoted readers? My occasional short observations need a home too, damn it! They also need a moniker to distinguish them from Mike's Errata (which is like a world-destroying brand name at this point that I wouldn't dare co-opt), but I couldn't come up with one this morning. Any suggestions? While you think on that, here's some non-Errata errata ...-- Brad Hawpe came off the DL Friday and blasted a two-run homer. Then yesterday, he hit a grand slam. After a shitty April and May, everyone probably forgot that he had 116 RBI last year. Hell, I even gave him up as a throw-in on a trade earlier this month. But that manager ended up cutting him days later when he suddenly needed the DL spot. So I picked him back up today.-- Thank you, Oliver Perez. Now, I'm not saying run and pick Oll...

A Weekend To Honor (Sort of) Mullet Men
2008-06-01 04:15:00 (c) OnFrozenBlog - http://www.onfrozenblog.com/ - Word leaked out yesterday that ESPN’s Barry Melrose was departing the TV studio and returning to the bench in the NHL, in Tampa. The Tampa media today appears to have verified the stunning news. We’re stunned. It’s been 13 years since Melrose coached in the NHL; the league has changed dramatically in that time, and while Melrose has monitored it nightly from his studio perch, that’s not the same as being in an organization and working day in, day out with league pros from scouts to GMs to equipment guys. And unlike a print beat guy traveling around with a team, Melrose has been holed up in a Connecticut TV studio the past decade plus. On the plus side, the transition seriously deals a virtual deathblow to ESPN’s hockey coverage, such as it is. Given the prevalence of startling young talent in the remade NHL, one enjoying best-of-the-decade TV ratings and best-ever revenues, what a time to be the WorldW...

How to craft your own time! Sort of.
2008-05-30 19:48:00 So there I was: bored to death with the 8.5 x 11 calendar I had printed up only a few months ago. Those tiny boxes, mocking me with their tinyness. No wonder I never got everything done in a day- look how small those boxes were! Black and white, black and white, and the occasional colored ink. So...dull...I longed for a great! big! wall calendar- something where I could see many months in advance, something colorful and fun. And I happened to have, if not technically the time, then at least many sheets of very large foam core, just sitting there...I think you know by now what had to be done.I broke out my ruler, pencil, calculator, and sharpies. Here's how I did it:First, I measured. (I do sometimes measure things, believe it or not, people close to me who may be amazed by this.) The sheets were 20" x 30"- 30" long breaks into 15 perfect 2" squares. I figured I needed 5 rows for a month. That makes 3 months to a sheet. And then 20" divided by seven turned into 2.85"...let's just s...
