They also signed righty Jorge Sosa to a minor league deal. Borkowski, 31, makes $800K this year. His 2.67 K/BB (21 innings) this year wasn't bad, but he allowed too many hits and home runs. Sammy Sosa To Retire After WBC?
2008-05-28 14:11:00 ESPN's Enrique Rojas, quoting the Dominican paper Hoy, writes that Sammy Sosa intends to retire after playing in the next World Baseball Classic (to be held in March '09). Sosa's quotes are confusing: "There's something that I wish to state very clearly: I'm not looking for a job. In fact, I have told my agent that he should stop offering my services to MLB teams. I'm not retired. I remain highly focused and not begging for a contract." I think Sosa's point is that he is still willing to play for an MLB team, but only if they come to him.

Jorge Sosa Officially Released
2008-05-24 15:44:00 Designated for assignment by the New York Mets back on May 13th, Jorge Sosa was officially released yesterday (bottom of the page) after the team was unable to find any takers on the trade market. Once he was DFA'd, it was a given that he and his $2MM salary would at least clear waivers. Sosa ended up declining an assignment to AAA New Orleans and is now a free agent. Since joining the Mets prior to the 2007 season, Sosa was primarily used as the longman out of the bullpen, during which time he compiled a 4.89 ERA. But a rough start to 2008 (7.06 ERA) was compounded by a logjam of relievers in the New York bullpen, and the team was unable to justify keeping him on the roster. But it was the Nats that beat-up on the Mets, once again Jorge Sosa as the long-man allowed critical add-on runs that took the game from reasonably trailing to a blown out. After Tues. game when Sosa was able to hold down a tie score in extra innings to give the team a chance to win, I could see them justifying keeping him instead of Joe Smith. But Sosa came back today and got knocked around just like he's been all season. Sosa gave up five runs (one earned run) on four hits in one inning of work. He has an ERA of 7.02 in 14 gms ( 16.2 innings) allowing 19 runs ( 13 earned) four of which are homeruns ( two grand slams) with a BB/SO ratio of 8/10. Getting rocked by one of the teams with the worst records in the league might have been just enough for Omar to stop worrying about the 2 million dollars in guaranteed money. 2008-04-10 12:10:00 According to Fred Mitchell of the Chicago Tribune, Sammy Sosa is considering retirement if he doesn't get an offer soon. Sosa passed the 600 HR plateau last year, so there's no statistical reason to hang around. Sosa drove in 92 runs in 114 games in his comeback season for the Rangers, but struggled against right-handed pitching. Apparently he has looking for regular playing time and/or decent money to play in '08; the Royals passed on his offer to play for them. Ken Rosenthal noted back in February that the 2013 Hall of Fame voting could be mighty interesting.

It appeared that aside from the last spot on the bench the roster was locked with major league contracts. I think Show will be hard to move with his contract unless there's a team desperate for a lefty, I also think that Show will have a bounce back year and might be missed if he's moved. With Duaner Sanchez back Sosa is really a redundant pitcher ( hard thrower with a good off-speed pitch). But moving either or both pitchers would give the team flexibility. It was a fluke, but Sosa did win 13 games for the '05 Braves with a miraculous 2.55 ERA. Sosa, now with the Mets, is available again according to Adam Rubin. He'll make $2MM in '08, and is a mildly useful swingman. Rubin says southpaw reliever Scott Schoeneweis is also being shopped. His was an odd contract when it was signed a year ago; he'll make $3.6MM in each of the '08 and '09 seasons. Maybe Scott Boras deserves credit for that one. If the Mets are to unload the 34 year-old they'll probably have to eat some salary or accept a bad contract in return.

However, a Royals official told ESPN last week that the team prefers to go young. Meanwhile, Jose Guillen is campaigning for Sosa. Really, Sammy taking away ABs from any current Royal doesn't seem to make any sense. You'd hate to see Billy Butler affected, and even a trickle down minor loss of opportunity for Joey Gathright, Ross Gload, Mark Teahen, or Ryan Shealy would be counterproductive. It's time for Sosa to settle in as a bench player who can mash lefties, rather than shoot for 400+ ABs.

The Royals apparently don't see a fit - they have their outfield and DH situations squared away and aren't eager to add a player with baggage. 2008-02-06 09:28:00 Ken Rosenthal has a new column up; let's have a look. Rosenthal believes Sammy Sosa, Mike Piazza, Roger Clemens, and Barry Bonds are likely to retire. He notes that it could make for an interesting Hall of Fame ballot in 2013 if all four hang up their cleats now. Part of the problem with Sosa, Piazza, and Bonds is that they're best-served as DHs. There are only 14 DH gigs, and none appear wide open. Because of deferred money, the present-day value of Johan Santana's contract is $123.1MM. In present-day money Santana gets $20.5MM annually while Carlos Zambrano received $18.6MM. So in a way, Santana only makes 10% more than Zambrano. By the way, Santana's $25MM club option for 2014 switches to a player option via many different achievable incentive scenarios. 2008-02-03 04:44:00 Many expected Jorge Sosa to be the first Mets player since David Cone in 1992 to actually make it to an arbitration hearing. Sosa doesn't appear to be in the teams long term plans, so the club didn't really need to worry about hurting his feelings. In 2005 he avoided arbitration by signing a one year contact in the amount of 0.65m with Alt., the very next year they re-signed him for 2.2m, that was the same year they traded him to St. Louis and he didn't make the playoff roster. Sosa was the last player Omar signed prior to the 2007 season, in January he was signed to a 1.25m guaranteed minor league deal with 40 man roster spot. This year he put himself in for a huge raise by requesting 2.75m, the Mets countered with a figure of 1.7m. The two sides have compromised by agreeing to a one year deal worth 2m.
