Southeast Asia: Perspectives on Compliance
2008-09-03 02:00:00 This past weekend, I left Southeast Asia after a week-long trip to Bangkok, Singapore and Manila. The week was spent in back-to-back meetings with customers and our local sales teams, and the majority of our discussions centered on PCI DSS and compliance in general. One clear takeaway: Compliance is one of THE growing areas of concern for businesses in the region. I found the degree to which customers in the region were concerned about compliance to be a bit of a surprise. I say 'surprise' because I often hear that compliance isn't as much of an issue outside of the U.S. From what we're seeing, though, the regulatory environment in non-U.S. geos, including Southeast Asia, is becoming more complicated...

In Southeast Asia, a Counterterrorism Strategy That's Working
2008-06-09 17:10:00 According to today's New York Times , a number of counterterrorism experts and governments have concluded that JI and other major terrorist networks in Southeast Asia have suffered significant setbacks in the past three years. The Times article found that the major elements in combatting the terrorist groups were effective law enforcement, heightened intelligence, ongoing military operations and "an erosion of public support." The implication is that an actual strategy, implemented over an extended...(read more)

New DNA evidence overturns population migration theory in Island Southeast
2008-05-24 01:23:00 The researchers show that population dispersals came earlier, from within the region, and probably resulted from flooding. The conventional theory, or the ?out of Taiwan? model, suggests that the current day populations of Island Southeast Asia (ISEA) originate in a Neolithic expansion from Taiwan, driven by rice agriculturalists about 4,000 years ago. This theory was contested 10 years ago by Oxford University scientist, Dr Stephen Oppenheimer, in his book Eden in the East: The Drowned Continent of Southeast Asia, when he suggested the migrations came from within ISEA and resulted from flooding in the region. This latest study, led by Leeds University and published in this month?s Molecular Biology and Evolution, shows that a substantial fraction of the mitochondrial DNA lines (inherited by female descendants) have been evolving within ISEA for a much longer period, some since modern humans arrived about 50,000 years ago. The DNA lineages show population dispersals at the same time a...

JI, al-Qaeda regrouping to boost forces in Southeast Asia
2008-04-02 09:12:00 The regional terror network Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) is now regrouping with al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden funding efforts to strengthen its forces in Southeast Asia, a top ranking Thai intelligence official disclosed Tuesday."The latest intelligence report we have about the JI is that they are regrouping," according to Maj. Gen. Thawip Netniyom, director of the Royal Thai Army Office for Policy and Plans.Thawip said the JI is consolidating what remains of its forces after its ranking leaders have been neutralized and arrested by regional security forces. He said Bin Laden continues to finance the JI to put it back as a potent terrorist force in the region."Osama bin Laden still has a lot of connections with the JI. The bulk of the finances of the JI for their operations comes from Bin Laden," he said.Thawip said Thai authorities, including intelligence networks from different countries, are keeping track of the sources of funds of the JI."Without Osama bin Laden, the JI would not have...

Southeast Asia could escape global slowdown
2008-03-23 02:17:00 Southeast Asian central banks expect strong domestic demand and regional trade to help mitigate the impact of likely lower global growth, the banks said yon Saturday following a two-day meeting.Governors from Southeast Asian countries, as well as South Korea and Taiwan, gathered in Jakarta for a regular meeting as policy makers globally try to tackle a credit crisis that is threatening to drag on worldwide economic growth."Governors noted that global growth is expected to weaken... while the region will be affected by increasing downside risk to the global outlook," the banks said in a statement.Asian economies rely heavily on exports to the United States, so governments and bankers fear a weaker dollar and economy is likely to crimp Asia's growth. But the statement said that "the impact will be partially mitigated by strong domestic demand and increased intra-regional trade".Indonesia News Blog: http://indosnesos.blogspot.com-

Life's a beach in Southeast Asia: HotelBookingPro shares its sun?kissed sec
2008-03-18 05:54:00 Just 30 years ago, the pristine shores of Southeast Asia and her plethora of islands, archipelagos and exotic coastlines were largely inaccessible to the average traveler. Rumors of white?powder beaches and placid, crystal clear waters to be found off the Andaman and China Seas were circulated mostly among backpackers. While Phuket and Bali were on the tourist map so to speak, even these larger land masses harbored sandy stretches where foreign feet had barely made an imprint.Indeed, enigmatic Southeast Asia provided endless opportunity for exploration, and gave rise to an almost mythical impression of virginal beaches and uncompromised beauty. A myth undoubtedly fuelled by the emergence of literature such as Alex Garland's The Beach and the massively?popular movie that followed. And so the secrets of the beach?rich East began to be revealed, and investment and development arrived in the form of luxury hotels, bitumen roads, international airports and golf courses. Suddenly, for th...

The Pickins are Good for Buyers in Southeast Florida Real Estate
2008-02-17 02:00:00 In Southeast Florida, with the over supply of choices, the pickens are fabulous for a Buyer. This Buyers market comes around every 10 - 12 years, WOW! That is not often enough for a Buyer to be in the drivers seat. Many Buyers have already taken the aggressive stance to move forward with a purchase and many are waiting. WAITING FOR WHAT? Waiting till they hear that it is a good time to buy? By that time it is too late. It is like when your Hairdresser tells you to buy a stock-IT IS TOO LATE! When everyone is on the bandwagon, it is too late for THE BEST opportunities. Look what happened with all of the investors buying and flipping real estate the last couple of years. By the time they got into the market the bottom was falling out and now many are stuck with over valued properties that they have to short sale or suffer through a foreclosure. This is not a Sellers market unless they have a lot of equity or can afford to take a loss. This is a Buye...

Southeast 窶徨ace窶 may force NHL to revamp playoffs
2008-02-15 00:57:00 Southeast division winner may use back door to sneak into NHL playoffs Watching the gong show that is the race for the top of the Southeast Division, one is left to ponder if the time hasn't come for the NHL to blow up its playoff format. If the current trend continues, there may be little choice. With less than two months left in the regular season, it's not a stretch to believe the winner of the Southeast Division could make the playoffs and get the third seed although, in any other scenario outside of a division crown, they would miss the post-season altogether.Nor is it outside the realm of possibility that the division winner will struggle to hit the .500 barrier.Currently, three teams share the Southeast lead with 60 points, a total surpassed by eight other teams in the East. The Eastern Conference cellar-dwelling Lightning, meanwhile, are nine points back of eighth-place Boston for the final playoff spot in the East, but sit just six points off their...

Spring Break ideas for families: southeast
2008-01-03 03:59:00 Georgia and the Carolinas have some hotspots for families, for spring break: though of course the "hot" (as in temperature) can vary a lot. * Sea Island Georgia -- home of a legandary upscale resort-- is one of the barrier islands off southern Georgia, with a mild climate, and yearly average temperature of 68ー. Average for March is about 70ー, 75ー in April, but of course days vary; early March highs swung from 65 to 81ー. Water temperature, meanwhile, averages 66ー in spring. Award-winning and the kind of place where families return for generations, Sea Island's main building, The Cloister, was built in 1928. Four resorts share 10,000 acres of forest, lawn, and marshland, 5 miles of private beachfront, and many outdoor and indoor activities for families. * Kids programs are offered during spring break. (Check with the resort, for updates.) * Hilton Head Island, South Carolina: this popular destination has average highs in the 70's in March and April, and a range of lo...

Australoid Genes in Southeast Asians
2007-12-24 15:59:00 As we noted in a previous post, many amateur Internet anthropologists, NE Asians, White Supremacists and other folks argue that SE Asians have substantial Australoid influence, which influences their phenotype. This harkens back to an earlier era in anthropology when this view held wide currency.Australoid, a term which has fallen out of favor but still deserves to be used, refers properly to Papuans and Australian Aborigines.Australoids definitely refers to Papuans, who can be characterized that way both anthropologically and genetically. The Yali are a tribe in Western New Guinea, presently being colonized by Indonesian settler-colonist criminals with the assistance of US imperialism as "Irian Jaya". This Yali tribesman has an interesting phenotype that I can't quite characterize. His eyes look sort of Asian. Love the bone through the nose.It does not refer to Melanesians, who are Asians with significant Australoid base. Whether or not it properly refers to Negritos and Veddoids ...

Southeast Asian players get ready for 2008 Olympics
2007-12-20 04:49:00 In the recent 24th Sea Games in Nakhon Ratshasima Thailand, Southeast Asian athletes were able to get a feel of competing with the best of the bests before the awaited Olympics 2008. Thailand leads the Southeast Asian pact of atheletes having a total medal of 409. With a big gap from the first, Malaysia follows with 216 medals then Vietnam with 204. I’m still skeptic about their skills if they can actually defeat China’s bets or US. But I’m sure they are all vying for the gold in the Olympics. With only 232 days (as of Dec 19, 2007) to go before the Olympics, athletes are cramming to improve their statistics/goals/skills. Read More: Southeast Asians hone traditional skills for 2008 Olympics Also check out the official SEA games site.
Enterprise is key to Southeast Asia's future
2007-12-18 00:39:00 The three largest economies in Southeast Asia - Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand - are risking future growth by failing to create companies that matter. The deficit in homegrown enterprise in these nations was brought into sharp focus this month by Boston Consulting's annual ranking of 100 companies from 14 developing economies that, it says, are changing the world. These companies have several things in common: They have all built a serious international presence and either crossed - or are fast approaching - the $1 billion threshold in annual revenue that Boston Consulting analysts say is crucial to go global in a big way. Finally, all of these companies have the financial muscle to expand quickly. Not surprisingly, most of these 100 companies are from China, which has 41 of them, and India, which is next with 20. What is surprising, however, is that Indonesia, with a $365 billion economy last year, has only one company on the list, unchanged from 2006. Hungary, whose economy... |
