Russia: Back to the Future ? HUMAN EVENTS
2011-12-28 18:06:00
Last weekend’s massive protest in Moscow’s Prospekt Sakharova will result in a new Soviet-style Russia not an Arab Spring-like revolution. The West had better beware because the Russian bear is coming out of hibernation. Twenty years ago this month the Soviet Union crumbled and from those ashes rose a promising Russian democratic republic. But Soviet-era corruption reared its ugly ...
The Soviet Union and the Holocaust
2011-01-18 02:56:00
Victors write history, and so the Soviet Union did in relation to Germany. It’s not only that the Soviets displaced the blame for their own crimes, such as the Katyn massacre, onto the Germans. The Soviet Union is also largely responsible for the Holocaust. Mass murders do not fit in with the German law-and-order mentality; the Germans learned it from the Russians. Two years before the Nazis started loading Jews into cattle trains, Russian security forces did just that with Poles. Starting in the winter of 1940, close to 400,000 people were relocated from the Soviet-occupied regions of Poland. The Soviets gradually escalated mass violence, testing it meticulously. They tried work camps, which killed through cold and planned starvation; they also tried mass executions of loosely defined enemies of state, and ethnic relocation. Brought together, these three components paved the way to genocide. Other relocations were repressive but not genocidal. It was only the Poles whom the Sovie...
Russia: Soviet Union War Hero On Trial In Estonia!
2008-05-29 13:22:00
Arnold Meri Hello,Estonia has put an 88 year old veteran of the WWII. Moscow is having some real issues over this.........---------------------------------------------Arnol-d Meri is being tried in Estonia for genocide during WW2. But in Russia the 88-year-old veteran is considered a hero, and streets and schools are named after him.Arnold Meri is an Estonian national who was awarded the highest state medal during the war. Estonia accuses him of taking part in the deportation of hundreds of his countrymen to Siberia after the war. If convicted, he could spend the rest of his life behind bars.A village in Russia’s Pskov region is naming a school after the veteran. It educated the regiment under Meri’s command in 1941. Back then, Meri organised the region’s defences against the invading Nazis. He was wounded several times in action. And the city of Gorno-Altaisk in Southern Urals is giving Meri’s name to a street. He lived there after he was stripped of all honours in 1952. Meri ...
Telling the Soviet story
2008-05-22 14:52:00
A new film about Nazi-Soviet links BEING burnt in effigy on the streets of Moscow by nationalist hoodlums must count as a kind of Oscar if you are a Latvian filmmaker whose aim is to expose modern Russia’s blindness to the criminal history of the Soviet Union. The ire of Young Russia’s protest outside the Latvian ...
When the Kremlin Tried a Little Openness
2008-05-18 23:18:00
Still, it is worth recalling a time when a little openness flew out of control. As a correspondent and bureau chief for The New York Times in Moscow in the late 1980s, I had a ringside seat to observe the slow disintegration of the Soviet Union under Mr. Gorbachev. The collapse of the Soviet empire and ...

Russia Turns to Libya to Tighten Grip on European Energy Supply
2008-04-18 19:30:00
Russia agreed yesterday (Thursday) to write off $4.5 billion in Libyan Cold War-era debt in exchange for military and civilian contracts for Russian companies, Reuters reported. The deal will almost certainly help Russia tighten its grip on European energy supplies. “I am satisfied by the way we have solved the debt problem,” Russian President Vladimir Putin ...SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: "Russia Turns to Libya to Tighten Grip on European Energy Supply", url: "http://jutiagroup.com/2008/04/-18/russia-turns-to-libya-to-tig-hten-grip-on-european-energy-su-pply/" });
The Soviet Union extension .SU just won?t go away
2008-04-15 17:46:00
ICANN is still attempting to get rid of the obsolete SU (Soviet Union) extension with little success. While they have managed to turn off the .YU (Yugoslavia) extension successfully last year, they are finding rebellion among Russian webmasters, ISPs and the Registry itself. To summerise the dispute so far, September saw ICANN release a statement urging ...

The former Soviet Union has a complicated history that is told in part through some of its deserted infrastructure. Many of these structures, cities and areas were abandoned suddenly and thus provide a kind of snapshot of Soviet life frozen in time. Others tell stories of economic and political upheaval and even nuclear events. From oil rig cities and deserted industrial towns to dazzling island fortresses and once-luxurious estates of the Soviet elite here are seven more amazing Soviet abandonments. For more Soviet abandonments (from gruesome gulags to submarine bases) check out part one of this series. Abandoned Island Fortress: Fort Alexander sits abandoned on a man-made island off the shore of St. Petersburg. Constructed in the 1800s, the fort has over 100 cannon ports providing 360-degree defense. After the Crimean War it was initially used as a military storehouse before being converted by the Soviets into a dangerous plague research center due to its physical isolation from...

Russia vs. the Ukraine: Gazprom always wins
2008-02-15 16:15:00
The Ukraine government is a teenage boy, and a rather ungrateful teenage boy, at that. The former Soviet Bloc country wants to be independent and chose its own friends. But at the same time, it still wants an allowance from good old Dad. And in this case, Dad is Russian natural gas giant Gazprom, which threatened ...

7 Abandoned Wonders of the Former Soviet Union: Deserted Cities, Buildings,

There are amazing abandonments in America but the former Soviet Union has some of the most interesting, unique and strange abandoned buildings. The worst thing to ever come out of the former Soviet Union
2008-01-16 07:44:00
Sure, many negative things emerged from the Soviet Union: abysmal customer service, frightening post offices, hideous architecture from the 1960s onwards... but I remain convinced that the worst holdover from the Soviet Union is the cat pee box. While in the West we developed litter boxes filled with a variety of clumping, odor controlling cat litter, covered litter boxes and even self-flushing litter boxes, the former Soviet Union gives you this horrid contraption:Pleasant, huh? And I bet you can guess how wonderful this contraption is at odor control. Now there *is* kitty litter to be found here; however, thus far I have only located it in one store at an outrageous price ? something like $21 for a mere couple of pounds! I have three cats; at that price, I?d be spending my entire salary on litter. Instead I?ve opted for the following method of odor control:Ok, so perhaps this isn?t the best solution, but it improves the air quality of my apartment quite substantially. You know, as...

Laika: a graphic novel of the first dog in space
2007-11-20 16:53:00
I've always had a soft spot for Laika, the first dog in space, who tragically died upon the Sputnik II shortly after takeoff. I wanted to name my current pooch after the canine cosmonaut, but lost the naming battle with my partner. I can finally live out my space dog dreams through a beautifully illustrated biography of the most famous dog in the former Soviet Union. Laika, a graphic novel by Nick Abadzis, recounts the life of this furry victim of the Soviet space race. Based upon historical fact with flourishes of fiction, Laika's colourful characters bring life to a dark period of Soviet history. And for those with a cartoon dog fetish, Laika reminds BoingBoing's Cory Doctorow of the famed Tin Tin, a similarity that "nicely complements the subject matter, contributing much to the sweetness of the story, and serving as counterpoint to the exhaustive research."

Monafiq Maulvis Alliance : MMA
2007-10-16 17:44:00
The whole politics of all the leaders of MMA reeks of hypocrisy and double standards. They are fighting like hell among them, but they are not prepared to break the disgusting alliance, the alliance which clean sweeped the whole of NWFP and major part of Balochistan in the previous elections. But now people sling mud upon them. People are not even prepared to say prayer in their leadership. People never forgave MMA for supporting General Musharraf through 17th amendement, and then their refusal to give resignations from the assemblies, when Musharraf didnt shed his uniform according to the promise in 2004.The silver lining of the recent presidential elections is that it has exposed the MMA. People's party was exposed years ago, but the permit and diesel maulvis have just become naked in front of nation in the broad day light. Maulana Fazl's delaying tactics which kept the NWFP assembly intact for the presidential election, hence giving it the legitimacy, screwed up the opposition e...

THE PYRRHIC “VICTORY” OVER THE SOVIET UNION
2007-10-09 13:42:00
It is repeated often enough that Ronald Reagan “won” the Cold War. True, his defense policies helped push them over the edge; an edge the Soviet economy had brushed against for decades. But if one were to give proper credit for presidents who “won” the Cold War, we’d have to start with Harry ...

Soviet Union witnessed invasion of US-made UFOs in 1980s
2007-09-30 00:47:00
The first ?flying saucers? could not cover long distances, and Americans had to use submarines to deliver those saucers to the Soviet shores. The Pentagon was testing the third generation of flying saucers when the Soviet Union just started development of similar mechanisms. A correspondent of PRAVDA.Ru is going to break the secrecy requirement and publish a story told by a former engineer of an enterprise where UFO components were manufactured. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the USSR witnessed an invasion of unidentified flying objects. Some of the ?visits? were particularly curious. In December 1989, policemen in the Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk came to a scene of actio and witnessed ?some dark apparatuses with colored lights? were experimenting on a power line going to a local aluminum plant. Other acquaintances of the man who told the story witnessed objects flying over the Yenisei River and the city of Krasnoyarsk. The man himself saw an UFO earlier, April 26, 1989 in the Ur...

A Lesson From The Soviet Union
2007-08-13 04:56:00
Delaying the InevitableBy Nicholas D. KristofThe New York TimesAs we struggle to extricate ourselves from Iraq, it?s useful to look at how the Soviet Union handled a similar position in the 1980s. Then we should do the opposite. The Soviets invaded Afghanistan in 1979 based partly on an intelligence failure analogous to our own in Iraq: they believed that their poorly behaved puppet in Kabul was poised to switch loyalties to the United States.By 1986, the Soviets wanted to end the Afghan war, and tried some of the same approaches that we have tried or talked about: a new constitution, a new leader, a policy of ?national reconciliation.?These worked as well for them as they have for us.Many Soviets just wanted to cut their losses and pull out. But other officials raised counterarguments that may sound familiar:If we simply pull out, we?ll destroy our influence around the world for a generation. And if we leave, the country will fall apart, and there?ll be a bloodbath focusing on our f...
Soviet Union?s collapse caused by imminent starvation?
2007-07-30 19:31:00
So, it might have been imminent starvation not Regan’s “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall” line that inspired the collapse of the Soviet Union. That is the thesis of a best-seller in Russia, soon to be released in the West, entitled “Collapse of an Empire: Lessons for Modern Russia,” by Yegor Gaidar, an economist who was ...
