High soybean price halts biodiesel production in Minnesota plant
2008-03-16 20:03:00
Photo by Skidrd. Licensed under Creative Commons license 2.0.Is SoyLess too easy here? The SoyMor biodiesel plant in Albert Lea, Minnesota is responding to the high prices for soybean oil by stopping production of biodiesel, at least temporarily on Friday. Soybean oil costs make up 80 percent of a biodiesel plants operating costs, according to the USDA, so even a little jump has a huge impact. In 2007, though, prices leaped from 28 cents to 45 cents a pound and haven't stopped increasing. Friday's prices was 62 cents. Before the shutdown, the plant was already operating at about half-capacity, running less than 15 days a month for the last four months. Production might restart, depending on prices for soybean oil, diesel fuel and the value of the U.S. dollar, SoyMor's chairman told the local press.[Source: Albert Lee Tribune]
First soybean genome assembly released to enable bioenergy research
2008-01-21 10:29:00
The DOE Joint Genome Institute in California, USA, have released the first soybean genome assembly to the worldwide scientific community to enable bioenergy research.   The soybean genome project was initiated through the DOE JGI Community Sequencing Program (CSP), with support from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the National Science Foundation.   This large-scale shotgun DNA sequencing project began in the middle of 2006 and will be completed in 2008.   The current assembly gene, set, and browser are collectively referred to as "Glyma0".   Glyma0 is a preliminary release, based on a partial dataset. This is expected to be replaced with an improved, chromosome-scale "Glyma1" version by the end of 2008.   Early users of this data are encouraged to track their favorite genes by saving local copies of the DNA sequences of these loci, and not by identifier or sequence coordinate, as these will change in future versions.   D...

Bulog Will Import Second-class Soybean
2008-01-21 00:55:00
The State Logistics Agency (Bulog) has not yet found any alternative to the soybean exporting country other than the United States. Temporarily, Bulog will continue to import soybeans from Uncle Sam. ?Soybeans from the US are second-class, not first,? Bulog?s Managing Director, Mustafa Abubakar, told reporters at the vice presidential office, Jakarta, yesterday.Actually the best quality soybean is from Canada, then the US. Yet, the price is high. Brazil and Argentina are the world?s big soybean producers, but the quality is still below that of the US. ?So when it comes to price, what is appropriate for Indonesia is the second-class soybean from the US,? said Mustafa. The soybean price continued increasing from Rp3,000 per kilogram in late 2007 to Rp8,000 per kilogram. The price increase was caused by the soybean price increase in the international market from US$300 per ton to US$600 per ton.The soybean price increase was a blow for thousands of tofu and tempe producers in Indonesia....

Govt to lower soybean import duty
2008-01-15 05:15:00
The government would lower the soybean import duty to lower the domestic price of soybean, Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu said here, Monday. "One concrete move that we can take is to lower the import duty from 10 percent to five or zero percent. We will calculate it later," the minister said after a talk with tofu and tempe (fermented soybean cake) producers at the Presidential Palace. Some 3,000 tofu and tempe producers staged a rally outside the presidential palace, urging the government to stabilize soybean price which jumped almost by 100 percent in the past year. The minister said, the price of soybean skyrocketed from US$300 to US$600 per ton within the past seven months due to the declining production in the United States as main supplier. The U.S has converted some of its soybean farms to corn farms to take the benefit from the higher price of corn used for biofuel products.Indonesia News Blog: http://indosnesos.blogspot.com-
