As China Surges In Space, Russia Stumbles
2011-12-31 19:20:00 The two largest space powers outside the U.S. had wildly divergent records in 2011, with Beijing boasting 19 launches and demonstrating in-orbit docking for a future space station while the Kremlin ordered an investigation into a string of high-profile engineering failures plaguing Russia’s space program. The implications for Russia of a nosedive in the quality ...

China's National Space Program Copies Star Trek Logo
2009-05-13 22:32:00 To give them full credit, I shouldn't say that China's National Space Administration ripped off a Star Trek logo. They actually ripped off two Star Trek logos. Check it out:

US-Russia Chill Threatens NASA Space Program
2008-08-25 17:05:00 From Yahoo! News: Science News: AFP - The chill left on US-Russian relations by Moscow's military incursion into Georgia could spell problems for future US access to the International Space Station, US experts said. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration will become d
Earth Day, The Space Program, and Teleworking
2008-04-11 01:04:00 They don't seem to go together, do they? That's what I thought too until I researched the history of Earth Day (April 22nd). It just so happens that Earth Day was born in 1970, which was also the year of Apollo 13, NASA's infamous successful failure. Where does teleworking or virtual assisting come in and how does it relate to our space program? I'm so glad you asked! Several weeks ago we watched a Discovery Channel piece on Apollo 13. As we watched, it occurred to me that our very own space program is managed virtually! Our space shuttles lift off from Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. And where is Mission Control Center located? At the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. If NASA can manage our space missions virtually, why can't just about any business in the world be managed virtually and employ virtual assistants and teleworkers? It's pretty amazing what can be done without the confines of a bricks and mortar of...
Will Japan’s space program take off?
2008-04-01 18:26:00 Japan's space agency began recruiting astronauts for the first time in nearly a decade on Tuesday amid growing interest in the space program spurred by a Japanese astronaut's journey on the U.S. space shuttle Endeavour.
China?s Space Program Could Bolster Country?s Military, Japanese Analysts S
2008-03-27 05:05:00 China’s evolving space development should be closely watched for its potential impact on the country’s military buildup, a Japanese Defense Ministry think tank report said Thursday. “It is likely that China will continue to actively engage in space development in the years ahead, given that such development serves as a vital means of achieving military competitiveness ...

Hubble and the Space Program
2008-02-04 02:56:00 I was reading this article at Universe Today and felt it necessary to comment on the state of the space program in this country. I have concerns, you see, and they are legit concerns. Or so I think. The article talks about the repairs that will be done on Hubble in a way that sounds as if the astronauts have better things to do. I'll admit that they probably do, but it's also not Hubble's fault that they have other crap to do. Needless to say, Hubble is getting an upgrade and will be 90 times more sensitive and be capable of picking up over 900 galaxies as its field of vision is being increased. Also, its lifespan is being extended to 2013, with a scheduled decommission date in 2020 (which is part of what I want to discuss). Firstly, I'm glad to hear that they'll be fixing this amazing satellite. It apparently suffered a power failure in January of last year and is in need of some fixing. Thanks to NASA for fitting it into their schedule. Here is my concern, though. What...
U.S. Space Program is 50
2008-01-31 19:26:00 That's right, our glorious, slowly dying space program is officially 50 years old today. I think it's cause for some celebration. As such, I'm officially holding a "Yay, our SP is 50" party over Superbowl. Who's with me?On a side note, here is a New Scientist article on this very subject, though they're not offering to host a Superbowl party in Van Allen's favor...(Don't click the read more, there isn't any more after this!)
Japan To Reboot Space Program With Paper Airplanes
2008-01-22 09:10:00 I really don't know what to make of this story. University of Tokyo "researchers" and members of the Japanese Origami Airplane Association are trying to develop a paper "spaceplane" able to survive the flight back from the ISS to the Earth. If that doesn't seem ridiculous enough, the prototype being tested in an "ultra-high-speed wind tunnel" at the University of Tokyo?s Okashiwa campus is a mere 3.1 inches long. What, they couldn't afford to spring for a full sheet of paper? I guess it was a little snarky of me to run down their wind tunnel, since it is able to subject test items to 5,300 mile per hour winds. However, I find myself wondering if a paper airplane could even be subjected to 5,300 mph winds anywhere but in a wind tunnel. I'm thinking that the terminal velocity of a paper airplane is about twenty miles per hour.

Rare Photos of the Russian ?Buran? Space Program
2007-12-25 06:52:00 It was the Largest and Most Expensive in Soviet Space Exploration History - a grand effort and a noble, if not fully realized, dream The frustrating end to this titanic program (it was canceled in 1993 due to the political situation and a lack of funding), and some resemblance of “Buran” to the American space shuttle, make it easy to forget the impressive results that it achieved: a fully operational line of shuttles with one (unmanned) space flight in 1988 and the development of the huge “Energia” launcher, which is fully capable of lifting 200 tonnes into orbit and delivering a payload to the Moon. Click to enlarge most images In other words, this program was something to behold while it lasted. Here we present rarely seen photographs of the various stages in “Buran”’s development and its trial flights, compiled from numerous Russian sites, including the most authoritative Buran.ru. INDIAN SPACE PROGRAM: A BIG LEAP
2007-12-17 16:19:00 The successful testing of the fully Indian designed and developed cryogenic engine stage on November 15 marks a significant milestone in the quest of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to attain self-reliance in the launching of satellites from the Indian soil. This indigenous cryogenic engine stage will now replace the Russian supplied upper stage of the three-stage GSLV, the most powerful space vehicle built by ISRO. Moreover, this high performance engine would enable GSLV launch a 2.5-tonne class satellite into a geostationary transfer orbit 36,000 km above the equator where a satellite appears stationary with respect to earth. On a more practical plane, a fully indigenous GSLV would end India’s dependence on the European Ariane space vehicle for getting the INSAT series of domestic spacecraft off the ground. Incidentally, the first two stages of 49-metre tall, 414tonne GSLV are derived from the modules of the four-stage Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) wh...

2007-07-12 08:00:00 UFO ’studies’ have come a long way since the days of Billy Meier, when you could just throw a pie plate or a hubcap into the air and take a polaroid, and presto … proof of flying saucers! Now in these days of Photoshop and CGI, you can get much more elaborate and realistic images — none of those silver blurs anymore. DJ Chubakka introduced me to a weird world of modern UFO enthusiasts. Nowadays you can read the markings right off the hulls of the spaceships.
