Space Shuttle Launch
2008-06-06 05:29:00 A new shuttle launch already. It seems just the other week there was a launch and a record time in space, with new benchmarks made in space walks and tasks achieved. Space Shuttle Launches Largest ISS Lab Yet
2008-05-31 23:33:00 At 5:02pm, the shuttle launched into space carrying with it the $1 billion Kibo laboratory. The laboratory will be the largest room in the ISS yet, and is approximately the size of a tour bus. Kibo, Japanese for "Hope", is culmination of 20 years of research and development by the Japanese. This section marks the unofficial start of a collaboration that is turning out to be very international indeed. It is a great symbol of Japanese pride, and should be.I personally am very excited for the Kibo, and that the Japanese are coming aboard the ISS in a very big way. As an American citizen, I recognize that we sometimes have a severe superiority complex about our nation being the "best", but I'm excited for the Japanese, because to make true progress in the realm of space travel we need to work globally and not nationally.Congratulations Japan!

Buran Space Shuttle Floats Along the Rhine [Space Fleet]
2008-04-13 03:30:00 The Buran space shuttle was once the apple of the Soviet space fleet's eye. Unfortunately, it has now been reduced to floating peacefully down the river Rhine, where it will eventually come to rest at the Technik Museum Speyer in Mannheim, Germany. The great shuttle took to the skies only once during an unmanned test flight, but two decades later, the modern relic has gone the way of a crushed Buzz Lightyear—it's realized it can't fly, but at least it can put on one hell of an exhibition. Good on you, Buran. The images of the final float look stunning, and the video of the event, which is set against some seriously melancholic music, makes the whole event look like a sad and dignified funeral procession. Check out the pictures in the gallery below, then jump in to see the clip. Warning: have your hankies ready. galleryPost('burgi', 3, ''); [Siberian Light]

The Russian Shuttle Superior to the NASA Space Shuttle!
2008-04-04 23:58:00 Those pesky Soviets...er Russians and there socialist propoganda...er democratic...er dictatorial...er whatever they've got for a government and its pesky propoganda. The Buran shuttle itself, otherwise, is quite similar to the U.S shuttle, it is, however, more advanced in the sense that unlike the U.S shuttle it can be piloted unmanned solely by computer, completing even complex two week missions with no-one on board. To summarise... Buran-Energia was in many ways an improvement on the US Shuttle system, with a much more flexible design, even if sadly, it is not the system that is currently in operation. The U.S. Shuttle System Vs. Russia's Buran-Energia heh. eh... Wait. I got lost there somewhere. Doesn't something have to actually DO something before it can be declared better? I mean we are up to Shuttle Mission STS-124. That should count for something don't you think. Throw me a bone here people. There are some awesome pi...

Space Shuttle Endeavor Ready for Launch
2008-03-14 15:00:00 Okay the COOLEST thing happened while we were here in Florida this week. Yes, it justifies my use of all caps and yes, I still use the word "cool" it's just who I am--a child of the 80s (that and I can't bring myself to say "bomb" or "dope" instead). We visited Kennedy Space Center last Saturday which is something I've always thought would be fun to do. Maybe it's because I grew up with America's space program--I vividly remember the first space shuttle launch then later sitting in English class glued to the television watching the Challenger explode. So regardless of their whines Andrew and I dragged our less-enthusiastic children over to Cape Canaveral (or as we lovingly refer to it, Cape Evel Canaveral--an hour in the car can be a LONG time with four children and we get our kicks where we can) to get them a bit of cultural heritage. As I waited for Andrew to park the car I spoke with a guard who told me it was a bit busier that day due to the impending launch. THE LAUNCH??...

Weather may delay space shuttle launch from Florida
2008-02-07 12:26:00 CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (Reuters) - NASA prepared to launch the space shuttle Atlantis on Thursday on a long-delayed mission to deliver a $1.9 billion European laboratory to the International Space Station, but weather threatened another postponement. Atlantis was scheduled to lift off at 2:45 p.m. (1945 GMT) from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on the first space shuttle mission of the year. But the U.S. space agency's weather experts offered only a 30 percent chance of a launch as a cold front that spawned killer tornadoes in the southeastern United States headed toward central Florida. The front was expected to have lost much of its strength by the time it reaches the Cape Canaveral area, but meteorologists said it could bring rain, clouds and perhaps thunderstorms. Atlantis' mission was twice delayed in December by technical problems with an emergency engine cutoff system. The shuttle will carry Columbus, Europe's first permanent space lab, into orbit, where astronau...

NASA readies space shuttle Atlantis for launch
2008-02-05 06:17:00 By Irene Klotz CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla.(Reuters) - The crew of the newly repaired space shuttle Atlantis arrived at its Florida spaceport on Monday as NASA prepared to launch the ship on a mission to deliver a European space laboratory to the International Space Station. The three-day countdown to Thursday's 2:45 p.m. EST (1945 GMT) liftoff of Atlantis from the Kennedy Space Center was due to begin later on Monday afternoon. Meteorologists predicted a 40 percent chance the weather would be suitable for launch. Rain and clouds, however, could keep the shuttle grounded until Friday, when the forecast improves to an 80-percent chance of launch. The U.S. space agency canceled two launch attempts in December because of problems with sensors in the shuttle's fuel tank. The sensors are part of a system to shut down the shuttle's engines to prevent a catastrophic explosion if they run out of fuel before reaching orbit. "We can't afford to let the engines run dry because they tend ...

Challenger Space Shuttle Disaster - 22 Years Ago Today
2008-01-28 19:19:00 22 years ago today on January 28, 1986 saw the launch and destruction of the Space Shuttle Challenger. STS-51-L left the launch pad at Cape Canaveral (Kennedy Space Center) Florida. 73 seconds later the Orbiter, External Fuel Tank and Solid Rocket Boosters exploded into a massive fireball over the Atlantic Ocean, killing all seven (7) crew members aboard. Challenger was destroyed in the orbiter's tenth mission when an O-ring seal on its right solid rocket booster (SRB) failed. The O-rings failed to seal due to a variety of factors, including unusually cold temperatures. This failure allowed a plume of flame to leak out of the SRB and impinge on both the external fuel tank and SRB aft attachment strut. This caused both structural failure of the ET and the SRB pivoting into the orbiter and ET. The vehicle assembly then broke apart under aerodynamic loads. The crew of Challenger STS-51-L pose for their official portrait on Nove...
