Beware Online Gamers; Spammers Are After YOU.
2009-09-18 07:52:00 Let me raise some questions first. –> Do you know what is a Spam ? –> Why do spammers exist in the virtual world in abundance ? The most correct answers to the above two questions are - Spam is basically the abuse of any electronic messaging system by sending unsolicited bulk messages indiscriminately. The most simple and economically feasible reason of spammers existing and doing quite good in today’s virtual world is because advertisers face no operating costs beyond the purview of their mailing lists, and it is indeed a difficult task to hold senders responsible for their mass mailing activities. For sure, you and me, both are fed-up with the plethora of personal spams we receive day in and day out, but the fact of the matter is that our inbox no longer interests many spammers across the globe. Now, spammers have found a new and innovative way to attract attention, by targeting Online Gamers. With the extensive usage and popularity of Massively Multiplay...

Clever Comment Spammers
2009-01-30 05:02:00 I have been slow in posting but I regularly moderate comments and delete the spams but lately it has become more and more difficult to distinguish them from legitimate comments. Following is a sample of what these scum bags have been writing and I just deleted almost 200+ comments that were left on different posts just today!   Reviewing such huge numbers of spam comments is a nightmare and it is possible to delete genuine comments accidentally but I hope I haven’t done that. Here are some of them: “great pictures, Especially for me at this winter time ,I am so in love with hot countries,Very peaceful!” “Wow! this is a really nice blog. I loved reading it. Thanks!” “Nice info you have here.. I’ll use this a lot..thanks and nice site too :D “Good Afternoon…! ” “Great Forum & Community! I’ve been here as a freeloader for a while and finally got around to registration. I sorta live online - spend most of my days addic...

Stop Blog Spammers
2008-05-21 03:21:00 by: Len Hutton Blogs are now an extremely popular and important part of the internet. Millions of people blog every day. As blogs have evolved over the years, so has the commenting system. Now anyone can make comments on a particular blog posting. As blog commenting has grown more popular, so has spam commenting. In this newsletter, we?ll go over why comments are a great form of feedback for your blog, how they help the credibility of your content, what spam comments are and how to prevent them from happening. Comments ? A great form of feedback When blogs first came around, they were simply online journals. No one could post comments on a blog posting. That all changed in 1998 with OpenDiary, a site which allowed people to comment on blog postings. Now every blog, whether it is remotely or self-hosted, includes this option to comment. Commenting is great because it allows real people to tell you what they think about your form. It gives you feedback on what you are doing right and...

Goodbye, Twitter Spammers
2008-05-08 01:39:00 I never thought Twitter spammers were that big of a deal. Unlike with spam in your inbox, you can just "unfollow" and "block" spammers, you know. However, it looks like Twitter won’t be letting spammers muck up the community they’ve built. I saw the news over on Stay N’ Alive, where Jesse Stay wrote: Today, ...

Wordpress 2.5 Attracts More Spammers?
2008-04-26 01:00:00 I’m probably one of the few people who wasn’t impressed with Wordpress 2.5. I personally believe that Wordpress 2.3.3 was alot user friendly. At first I thought I’d appreciate Wordpress 2.5 when I get used to it. But then, three weeks of using it gave way for more problems (messy Wordpress theme, errors with plugins, troubles with widgets etc.). After using Wordpress 2.5 for about three weeks, I decided to revert back to Wordpress 2.3.3. From switching to Wordpress 2.5 and back to 2.3.3, I noticed a potential problem with using Wordpres 2.5. (Note: This is just an observation.) photo credit: MatthewCo Right after updating my blog from Wordpres 2.3.3 to Wordpress 2.5, I noticed a sudden increase in the number of spams in my comment and trackback. Before the update, I usually receive about 20-50 spam (comments and trackbacks). Also, before I updated my blog to Wordpress 2.5, the total spam caught by Akismet was nealy 4,500, which was accumulated since I s...

Spammers Ruin Everything
2008-04-17 18:24:00 Unfortunately because of an increase in spammers leaving bogus comments on the blog, I have had to take the dreaded step of adding word verification to the comments. I hate having to do that on other people's blogs, so I apologize that I am asking you to do it as well. I only want your amazing feedback, ideas, suggestions and questions and I don't want to dilute the content with unwanted spam. If it turns out that the comments really start to suffer from this then I will reverse it and just keep manually deleting the spam as it appears. For those that don’t know what the heck I am talking about, what this means is that when you leave a comment from now on, it will ask you to type in some letters/ numbers in a box first to make sure you are a human and not some spam. It only takes a few seconds to do, but it is an annoyance that I wish we didn’t have to do. ** Update- 5/7/08: Also another annoyance is when people leave comments that are simply to sell something they are promot...

Publicly Humiliating Spammers
2008-04-09 22:00:00 Sometimes I get emails that just irritate me to the bone, and normally, I would just delete them. However, for some reason, I've decided to publicly shame this particular person. %@*!*$# Spammers
2008-02-17 10:34:00 Lovely. In the process of switching my site over to a new comment management system that didn't conflict with my template I have found that spammers and spam bots have found it a welcoming dumping ground for smut and links to the same. I have recently installed a bot that should prevent further instances of this. I hate captchas and I really don't want my comment field to require this, but until I am confident that I have rid my site of this epidemic I will rely on both my bot and captcha system to keep the nastys away. Spam sucks.

Spammers, How stupid do you think we are?
2008-02-06 11:11:00 The technique for spamming a Blog seems to be "Go back far enough and no-one will notice." People really think they will get links to their sites by posting unmitigated crap in comments.Have they no understanding that the blog software emails the blogger with the comments and that we ~gasp~ delete them?If you have something to say, something meaty and worthwhile, say it. If you link to your site as an example, great. If you paid some imbecile SEO company to spam blogs, think again. You just flushed the money down the drain.
