Some Bubbly From Dad
2008-05-06 17:03:00 When my folks came to visit a couple weeks ago, they came bearing wine...some that I had shipped to their house, and some my Dad picked up from various tastings he attended since the last time we had visited. One of those bottles from a recent bubbly tasting was a Gloria Ferrer Sonoma Brut. It clocked in at 12.9% alcohol by volume and had a traditional sparkling wine closure. On the nose I found almonds, toast, nuts, apples, and more toast. The nose of the wine was very toasty. In the mouth the wine was very appley, with a little pear, tropical fruit, and some honey on the back of the palate. The wine was full of dry fruit, with nice bubbles. We drank this on its own after dinner, and it was a great after dinner treat. It runs around $13-$17 a bottle, and is definitely a fun sparkler in that price range.

Sofia Blanc de Blanc Sparkling Wine
2008-04-16 05:04:00 I have seen this pink little can in the store for a long time and it was finally time to put it in my basket. At $3.99 the Sofia Blanc de Blanc definitely won't empty your wallet. This sparkling wine is made from Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscat. The producer is Francis Ford Coppola (the famous movie director with a winery in Napa Valley) and it is named after his almost equally famous daughter, Sofia Coppola. It was a little but weird, but on the other hand fun, to pour this bubbly from a can into a crystal champagne glass. It has a pale straw color in the glass and has a lively stream of bubbles shooting towards the surface. On the nose it displays sweet pear and gooseberry. The palate shows pear, sweet white floral, and citrus. It is crisp and fresh. The first thing that came to my mind both smelling and tasting this wine is Italian Prosecco. It is sweet and vivid in flavor, missing the yeasty and earthy components of a champagne. This sparkling wine is a fun, refreshing, fest...

Happy New Year (again)!
2008-02-06 13:37:00 Alternative title: I love Roederer. I really do. We first were introduced to Roederer in August of 2006 while out in Sonoma. The inn keeper suggested we stop at Roederer on our way up to Bodega Bay, and I am very glad we did. While there we picked up several lovely sparklers, including my perennial favorite, the 1999 L'Ermitage Brut. Sadly, I have trouble finding that one any more, but I still pick up a bottle of Roederer when we are in a fancier sparkling wine mood. With that in mind, I scooped up this bottle of Roederer 25th Anniversary Brut the second I saw it on the shelf at The Winery in Old Town Alexandria, thinking it would be perfect for New Year's Eve. It cost me $23.99 minus a 10% case discount and had a traditional sparkling wine closure. We drank it out of the stemless Champagne flutes my Dad received for Christmas! On the nose the wine was toasty and nutty. I also found aromas of apples and lemons. In the mouth, the apples and toasty notes dominated the flavor. ...

Bubbly Bubbly Bubbly
2008-01-31 12:44:00 As we know from some past WBWs, the world is full of Bubbly that is not Champagne. One of my favorites for value and quality is Prosseco from Italy. I also love it for its low alcohol content. This bottle was a Mionetto Valdobbiadene Prosseco Brut. I picked it up at MV Wine and Spirits in Madison, CT for $10.95 (I see it online for between $13-$20), it clocked in at 11% alcohol by volume, and had a typical sparkling wine closure. On the nose I found green apple, honey, and and overall "fruity" aroma. In the mouth the wine has apples, peaches, and lemons. The wine had nice bubbles, it was crisp, and tart. This was a fun and easy sparkler and an excellent value!

Fruit Sparkling Wine is Extremely Popular in Japan
2007-10-19 20:34:00 In Japan, fruit wines have always been popular. Any wine store or wine section of a Japanese supermarket will have a relatively large fruit wine section. Now the rage in Japan is sparkling fruit wines. I will let the following article speak for itself:Source: July 9th, 2007 Yomiuri Shinbun Newspaper article translated to English. How would you like a refreshing sweet drink on a hot muggy night? Right now fruit flavoured beverages such as mango, strawberry, etc. are very popular. Champagne is famous for sparkling (bubbly) wines. In the past, the sparkling wine image was that it was drunk on special occasions such as weddings or Christmas dinner. Recently however, the wine has become very fashionable among young woman as an affordable luxury item whose crisp summer time taste, refreshing bubbles, and golden colour make people feel very elegant. Champagne ‘gardens’, (similar to beer gardens) have opened; female oriented fashion magazines have highlighted the “morning champagne” ...

Foss Marai Prosecco DOC Extra ? Dry
2007-03-01 19:21:00 Our current evaluation of Prosecco ends with Foss Marai Prosecco Extra ? Dry. Foss Marai Prosecco is a good Prosecco, produced using traditional methods. Foss Marai is part of the Consorzio dei Produttori Prosecco del Valdobbiadene but their claim to quality has been earned over generations. The Biasotto family has dedicated their efforts to the production of Prosecco for over a century. Foss Marai produces some very interesting wines and the Prosecco Extra ? Dry is just one of many quality products. The vineyard is located deep in the valleys of Guia. The local dialect calls the valleys, fossi. Marai is another name for Guia, thus the winery took the name of the place of production, Foss Marai.Foss Marai Prosecco Extra ? Dry develops the common floral flavors of Prosecco. While it is an extra ? dry we found it slightly tending toward sweet without the slightly bitter tones we like so much in the sparkling Prosecco. The bubbles are small and probably on the light side of other spark...
Bubbly, Sparkling Wine From Slovenia
2007-01-27 01:09:01 It’s not Champagne, it’s Bubbly. That’s the simple pitch behind a new sparkling wine known simply as Bubbly. The wine is produced in Slovenia near the Austrian border and uses Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Welschriezling and Furmint grapes. It comes in a range of styles starting with the Bubbly Luck Sec for $60 and ending with the 2001 VIntage Blanc et Blanc Bubbly Bliss which sells for $90. I haven’t been able to find any other information on these wines but I’m definitely intrigued. |
