Love In China. Actions Speak Instead Of Words.
2009-09-12 10:08:00 I just love this post, "Saying “I love you” with a toilet: of indirect displays of love in Chinese families," over at the Speaking of China blog. I love it because it perfectly illustrates how Chinese express an emotion (in this case love) differently than in the West. Differently, not necessarily better or worse. The post is about an American woman, married to a Chinese man, and how her in-laws show their affection for her by first installing a stand-up toilet, and then adding on rooms to their house. A Chinese client of mine (who has been living in the United States for probably 15 years now) told me of how her father never once told her mother that he loved her, but that her mother always knew from the way he acted. There has to be a way to relate this post to doing business in China and I would love (see how easy we Westerners are with that word) for someone to expound on it.

Guns, Can We Speak of Them?
2009-09-02 06:45:00 To make a gun has often enough been a legitimate engineering feat so much as to deserve some study. I myself have enjoyed target shooting, and twice used a gun to prevent harm to myself, or someone else. In one case I actually did fire the gun. May we shoot the sh*t, about guns? What hav
Hear no evil, See no evil, Speak no evil
2009-08-29 20:22:00 Jaycee Lee Dugard as many know by now has been found after 18 years. I was reading a story on Yahoo, and a few others about the fact people KNEW he was there with the children. The quotes from these neighbors and others just made me cry. You hear about the ONE call to the police - ONE in 18 years. It makes me sick. Its like the world has just decided that we just close our eyes, and stick to our own personal business. We can't get involved even with a anonymous call to the police. One person in 18 years did that. That fact makes me very angry! Hear no evil, See no evil, Speak no evil! They are going to want to hang the police out to dry for missing things when they did come to the house, and never bothered going into the backyard where they were. We don't know all the circumstances around that yet, but you just watch no one will wish to look at all the others that blew things off as well.Damon Robinson has lived next door to the Garridos for more than three years and his then...

2009-08-29 14:28:00 Product DescriptionImagine that you're from England, or India, or Hong Kong, and your English is impeccable. But when you travel to America, you get a funny look when you tell a colleague,"I'll knock you up tomorrow at half-eight." And you can't find bangers on a single restaurant menu. You feel like you speak a foreign language-because you do! You need to know how to survive in American English,
I Gotta Get Better at Gym Speak
2009-08-19 14:30:00 Photo credit: Morguefile Like many young men, I belong to a gym where I go to exercise. When I exercise, I sometimes lift weights--sure, I'll say for health purposes, but we all know it's largely a scheme to impress ChicagoNow blogger Ashley Bond (aka Miss Illinois). In the course of lifting weights to impress Ashley Bond, I occasionally require what is known as "a spot." This is not Lady Macbeth's weird hallucination but rather a friendly assist from another gym-going dude who will come over while I shove dangerously heavy weights above my head to make sure I do not drop them on my face. My problem is that in the course of getting a "spot," there is this...
An Intro to Yoga Speak
2009-08-19 07:04:00 Yoga is intimidating. The Sanskirt words don't help. The good news is, if you stick with yoga long enough, just like ujjayi breath and vinyasa, recognizing (and eventually understanding) Sanskrit words becomes second nature. Heck, you might even find yourself sliding back into downward dog faster than your teacher can say "Adho Mukha Svanasana." Until then, fake it 'til you make it with this basic Yoga Dictionary from Women's Health. If you were told to move into parivrtta parsvakonasana from this pose, would you know what to do?...
speak so silently
2009-08-13 19:37:00 Thurs 13: It is not always easy, possible or indeed advisable to share every emotion or event. Oddly, I also find it difficult to share mystical experiences including the times when communication with the divine is or seems very one-sided. It is said that God always replies. We just don?t often like the response. Sometimes the ...
Cleve Jones to speak at Join the Impact fundraiser on August 29
2009-08-12 15:06:00 Photo Credit: Paul Schreiber via Flickr Local LGBT activism group Join the Impact will host legendary LGBT Rights Organizer Cleve Jones to discuss the ongoing struggle for LGBT rights on August 29 at the Biograph Theater. From the Facebook Page: From the early days of Harvey Milk's activism (as portrayed by Emile Hirsch in the Oscar-winning movie Milk), to the founding of the AIDS Memorial Quilt and today's struggle for equal marriage, veteran activist Cleve Jones has been at the center of the LGBT rights movement for the last thirty years. Now, as the promise from the Obama administration to be a "fierce advocate" for equality for gays and lesbians continues to go unfulfilled--with both the Defense of Marriage...
I speak "Spitaliano"
2009-07-26 03:36:00 Some friends came to visit me in Florence, where I taught a travel writing class for the last month, and we decided to venture to the other side of the Arno, the river that divides the city. To me, the other side of the river is quieter and less ridden with tourists. We crossed the Ponte della Grazie and wandered over to some side streets. On one we found that a pizzeria and a restaurant had set up small wooden tables on the cobblestone streets. We decided to stop at a place called i'pizzacchiere on Via San Miniato and ordered a bottle of wine and drank it out of plastic cups.We had already eaten a picnic dinner of roasted chicken, potatoes...
The Geek To Speak At Bughouse Square Debates Saturday
2009-07-24 23:14:00 I'm literally trying not to soil my pants. The Geek is scheduled to speak at the annual Bughouse Square Debates on Saturday in Washington Square Park about the Chicago's "parking meter debacle."I'm so nervous, I've spent the afternoon desperately trying to find a friend with a prescription for Xanax so I don't have a nervous breakdown before I have to speak tomorrow. So far, no success. The Bughouse Square Debates is sponsored by the Newberry Library (which is on the north side of Washington Square Park) and runs from 1-4 PM. Historically, Washington Square Park was a place where orators would pull up a soap box and rant on the issues of the day. These days, the event is a...

Two China Things Of Which We Dare Not Speak (And Sex Is Not One of Them).
2009-06-12 15:52:00 I often get emails from readers asking me to write about a particular topic. There are two topics on which I frequently receive emails and on which I virtually never write. Proposed laws and China diplomatic meetings with foreign countries. Just about every time there is a rumor of a major new Chinese law, I get an email from someone asking me to write about it. I virtually never do. This happened most recently regarding the news that China would soon be requiring all computers sold within China to come with built in web filtering software. I do not like writing about proposed laws for the following reasons: 1. There are so many laws already on the books and being enforced that need coverage more. Laws on the books will impact you right now. Proposed laws may or may not ever come into being. 2. China has a very real habit of saying it will institute a new law and then never doing so. It floats new laws to gauge reaction. If the reaction is negative, the law oftentimes...

SEO Speak: Teleporting
2009-06-09 19:45:00 Beam me up Scotty? We’ve all done it – you know the name of the company you want to visit but you can’t remember their URL – is it .co.uk or .com? When this happens we all do the same thing – visit Google and type in the company name and click on the first result in the SERPs, as this will more than likely be the company you are looking for. Teleporting helps users, who are aware of your brand or company name, search for you directly without having to remember your full URL. If you look at your website stats and view the keywords driving traffic to your site it is more than likely that you will see a high number of people visiting your site from your company name, , URL, core brands, or variations on these. This process of searching for a company name to find their website is called teleporting by Google. Google launched “search within a site” boxes some time ago, following their research into the behaviour of ...

Speak Up! Speak Out! Public Speaking has great impact on PR Practitioners
2009-06-09 07:38:00 "Public communication skills are important for anyone who needs to share information with others. Or those who hope to persuade others about an issue". Public Relations professionals are no exception to this. Many times we, Public Relations practitioners, pay little attention to the formal consideration of our communication skills, especially public speaking skills. In this increasingly information-oriented age, Public Speaking skills are becoming more and more critical. As part of our profession, we need to influence people and win friends to get our work done. And most of the time, that is achieved through our gift of the gab.

Muslim women speak out about domestic violence
2009-03-31 16:19:00 The Buffalo news has a story about some Muslim Women in the Buffalo area that are SPEAKING OUT against what had happened to Aasiya Zubair Hassan, and about martial abuse within the Muslim home as well.We hear alot about the silence in the Muslim community over this awful tragedy, but there have been those that are speaking out! They also want to give people a glimpse of what the lives of Muslim women in Western New York are like. Because those lives, they admit, often seem to outsiders to be shrouded in mystery. It’s easy for people to see the garb they wear, the women said, and make assumptions about female repression in Muslim- American culture, especially where career opportunities and marital relationships are concerned.“It bothers me that the headscarf is such a barrier,” said Ahmed, 38.The three women said they do see one great good arising from the horrific death of Aasiya Hassan: a new openness about domestic violence, both within and outside of Muslim relationships.“S...

Speak up on behalf of apostates from Islam
2009-02-20 13:58:00 CSW says,'Over the last year Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) has carried out a special investigation into the human rights abuses suffered by apostates from Islam. The research included interviews with twenty eight apostates in six different countries. One apostate spoke of when he was subjected to torture in a Middle Eastern country. His torturer told him he could scream as loud as he wanted, but no one would hear or save him. When he realised this was true, he broke down and has never really recovered from the damage caused by his detention. No Place to Call Home is the title of the report on this investigation. It identifies that the application of the death penalty for apostasy is rare, even though most people associate this as a punishment for apostasy. Only Sudan and Malaysia make explicit mention of the death penalty for apostasy in their legislation, although there is still a very real risk of facing the death penalty in Saudi Arabia, Mauritania and Iran under their st...

Cheryl Donovan is the award winning author of Women What the Hell are You Thinking and the soon to be released Ministry of Motherhood.I enjoyed this quote:The bottom line is, love should never hurt. Domestic violence is never acceptable. It goes contrary to any religious teachings. Expecting a victim of domestic violence to simply pray about a situation and expect it to go away is ludacris. Encouraging a victim to keep the family together because it is what God would want is not scriptural or moral. Communities of faith need to open their eyes and understand the important role that they play in the fight against domestic violence. Training programs and outreach can assist congregants who may be experiencing physical or psychological abuse.Good for Cheryl Donovan and her speaking out about faith and domestic violence!

THE SECRET MACHINES SPEAK LOUDLY AND CARRY A DARK GUITAR
2008-09-26 12:37:00 Everything old is new again. Bands like Earth, Dungen, Black Mountain, and countless others are creating dark, organic, psychedelic works. And The Secret Machines is one of the bands that were ahead of the curve, pioneering the "new" sound eight years ago.In 2000, this Dallas power trio, which then consisted of the Brandon and Benjamin Curtis brothers and Josh Garza dropped one of the best retro albums of the last ten years. Now Here Is Nowhere was simply awesome. Then Ben Curtis left at around the time the band released the disappointing Ten Silver Drops. I don?t know if the brothers had been fighting or what, but?Drops? was . . . Boring. But now they?re back. They?ve been dropped from Warner Brothers, who refuse to put money into a band without a proven track record, and picked up by the independent, and smart folks at World?s Fair group. The self-titled album is kind of a relaunch. It?s easily as ambitious as their first album, but it?sretro in a different way. If the first...
