If Arlen Specter Had Voted Against the ?Stimulus? . . .
2009-07-02 08:08:00 . . . . he wouldn’t be facing headlines like this one in the Christian Science Monitor: Are Specter?s Senate days numbered? Arlen Specter given Chairmanship of Sub-Committee
2009-05-07 20:14:00 Newly minted, and already confused, Democratic Senator Arlen Specter has been given a Chairmanship of a Sub-Committee by the Democrats. Dick Durbin stepped down as the Chairman of the Crime & Drugs Subcommittee to pass the reigns to Arlen Specter (D-PA).This committee oversees about 60% of the justice department according to CNN. More importantly, this puts him dead in the center of the debate on the coming Supreme Court nominations of Barack Obama. This is a big deal!!! Especially interesting as so many of the objections to him are rooted in his cross-examination of Anita Hill during the Clarence "Coke Can" Thomas confirmation hearings. (Speaking of which...There is a movement underway on the blogs to recruit her for the opening on the SCOTUS!)Not too shabby for a man that was just two weeks ago in the minority party. Most spectacular of all is that this was taken from Dick Durbin (D-IL) who is the second most senior member of the party in the Senate. This speaks volumes...

Specter: GOP Killed Kemp
2009-05-04 03:52:00 As I said last week — Democrats, you can have this old coot. Specter?s Switch & GOP Shift on Spending
2009-05-01 19:51:00 As Democrats and the media try to dress up Arlen Specter’s switch to the Democrats as a sign of the drift of the GOP in the direction of extreme social conservatism or some such, it was really nothing more than, to quote a Democratic Party strategist, “a cowardly act of a cornered man.” As Byron York ...

Wingnut DeMint?s Anti-Dem Specter ?Spin?
2009-04-29 23:08:00 (And you guess it - I also posted here.)I?m sure you?ve read, as have I, a variety of explanations as to why Arlen Specter switched from a U.S. Senate Repug from PA to a Dem, but I have to tell you that the one from Specter?s former party colleague Jim DeMint may be the biggest stretch of all.As TPM tells us here?(DeMint) attributes the non-viability of the Republican party in states like Pennsylvania to the fact that voters have fled "forced unionization" in the northeast for the safety and comfort of the southern motherland.("the southern motherland" - tee hee...)I would say that that type of non-thinking has led the party to its current state of near collapse, particularly in the northeast, as kos tells us here.Well, maybe instead of criticizing all of us in the Keystone State for allegedly driving out those Repugs voters with our nasty unions and prevailing wage law, DeMint should pay more attention to his own backyard, as it were, particularly given this story which tells us?Ac...
The Departure of Arlen Specter& the Return to Unifying Republican Principle

Statement Arlen Specter Party Switch VIDEO TEXT
2009-04-29 02:48:00 I have been a Republican since 1966. I have been working extremely hard for the Party, for its candidates and for the ideals of a Republican Party whose tent is big enough to welcome diverse points of view. While I have been comfortable being a Republican, my Party has not defined who I am. I have taken each issue one at a time and have exercised independent judgment to do what I thought was best for Pennsylvania and the nation.Since my election in 1980, as part of the Reagan Big Tent, the Republican Party has moved far to the right. Last year, more than 200,000 Republicans in Pennsylvania changed their registration to become Democrats. I now find my political philosophy more in line with Democrats than Republicans. When I supported the stimulus package, I knew that it would not be popular with the Republican Party. But, I saw the stimulus as necessary to lessen the risk of a far more serious recession than we are now experiencing.Since then, I have traveled the State, talked to Repu...
Arlen Specter Welcomed Into Democratic Party
2009-04-28 23:42:00 Pennsylvanian Republican Senator Arlen Specter will run for reelection as a Democrat in 2010. Â Specter's vote for the Obama stimulus package was the final straw to fiscal conservatives essential to winning the Republican primary in Pennsylvania. Â Senator Specter received "bleak polling" numbers from advisers he said Tuesday. Â Polls showed that he would likely loose a Republican primary to Pat Toomey. Â Specter barely survived a primary fight in 2004 against Toomey. Â A second run against Toomey in the primary would not be in Specter's best interests.Specter told the media that Pennsylvania Democratic Governor Ed Rendell promised Specter he would not need to raise money if he ran as a Democrat. Â Democrats were silently ecstatic on Tuesday. Â Jumping on the inside Democratic Leader Harry Reid said now was "not the time to gloat."RNC Leader Michael Steele of course called Specter's move one of personal career protection and not of personal beliefs. Â Steele obviously trying to d...

2009-04-28 19:03:00 Senator Arlen Specter, (U - Scotland) has made if official. He will caucus with the Democrats and seek re-electiion as a Democrat. Chris Cillizza, Washington Post: Specter To Switch Parties Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter will switch his party affiliation from Republican to Democrat and announced today that he will run in 2010 as a Democrat, according to a statement he released this morning. Specter’s decision would give Democrats a 60 seat filibuster proof majority in the Senate assuming Democrat Al Franken is eventually sworn in as the next senator from Minnesota. (Former senator Norm Coleman is appealing Franken’s victory in the state Supreme Court.) For the record, we second Michelle: Don’t let the door hit you on the way out. Senator Specter Keeps Spygate Alive
2008-05-16 06:55:00 "We (the NFL) respectfully disagree with Senator Specter's characterization of the investigation conducted by our office. We are following up after yesterday's meeting with Matt Walsh." The NFL has to play nice, so you can see why they "respectfully" disagreed with Senator Specter. I, on the other hand, have no reason whatsoever to "respectfully" disagree. While a high-ranking United States Senator was meeting with a man about a football game, one could argue that there were other things going on that deserved his attention. I know what you're thinking. What else could possibly be happening in the real world that's more important than an NFL team stealing defensive signals? Maybe a few things... Some would argue that instead of wasting time meeting with Mr. Walsh, Senator Specter should have been meeting with the family of Cpl. Jessica A. Ellis. You see, while fighting in a war that Senator Specter supported, she was killed. Her death was announced by the military while...

Sarkozy and the Specter of May 68
2008-04-25 08:55:00 The Liquidator by Philippe Marlière Forty years on, the specter of May 68 continues to haunt France. A week before his election to the French presidency, Nicolas Sarkozy launched an astonishing attack on the "moral and intellectual permissiveness" of May 68. According to the rightwing candidate, the heirs of May 68 would be responsible for all French ills: the demise of traditions, the undermining of authority and the making of an "unethical capitalism" (the one of golden parachutes and rogue bosses). Ségolène Royal, his socialist opponent, led a campaign based on law and order issues, exalting the tricolor and the Marseillaise. To hammer home the fact that she was also spurning all things soixante-huitardes, Royal went as far as promising the creation of re-education camps for juvenile delinquents under the supervision of the army. In his latest book, André Glucksmann (a philosopher who has made the long journey from Maoism to neoconservatism) argues that Sarkozy is in...

Now apparently to the Senator from the great Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell isn’t doing enough to bring this whole Matt Walsh interview to a head. Sphincter wants the NFL to prove they are genuine in their efforts to work to an agreement with Walsh. He has asked gone as far as to ask Goodell to release the letters publicly between NFL representatives and the high powered Washington DC attorney, Michael Levy, who is representing the lowly golf pro and former video assistant. “I’d like to issue a challenge to the commissioner to make public the extensive exchange of correspondence between the league’s lawyers and Walsh’s lawyers,” Specter told the New York Times. Will Someone Shut This Specter Guy Up?
2008-02-14 15:44:00 I understand why steroids in baseball is an important issue that draws the interest of congress. If professional athletes use steroids, then college athletes will use steroids, and it will trickle down to high school athletes using them. That makes it something of national interest. But Spygate? I’m sorry, but if high school coaches are filming games trying to steal signals, I don’t really care. It’s not like it is harmful to the kids. And, let’s face it, this sort of stuff is a part of football. It always has been. Why do you think every coach covers his mouth up while calling in plays? Heck, teams have been known to send spies into other teams practices. That’s football. Yeah, you get caught, you get busted. There had to be a punishment and, honestly, I thought New England got off light. But why is congress — or, I should say, “a” congressman — getting involved in something so trivial compared to the national inter...

The ?Specter? of spy-gate surfaces at the Super Bowl!
2008-02-02 01:12:00 Besides being a nice example of alliteration, this week?s title is in reference to Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Specter who jumped on board and hijacked the Super Bowl news bandwagon. He didn?t try to re-focus the attention of the American people on important matters (like the violence in Kenya over the disputed presidential election). That would be too much of a downer while doing our part to support the economy by purchasing our 11-ounce bag of chips as part of the 11.2 million pounds of chips that are sold as part of Super Bowl parties.Specter held a press conference two days before the Super Bowl (note the timing!) to complain about a delay of several months in getting a response to requests for information about Commissioner Roger Goodel?s handling of the Patriot?s tapes. These are the tapes that were collected and destroyed four months ago as part of the spy gate investigation. Perhaps since Pennsylvania doesn?t vote in this week?s Super Tuesday election and no one cares about h...
