NFL Musings: The Evil Patriots, Specter, Raider Competence, and More!
2008-06-07 06:50:00
The action picks up in what Senator Specter calls his ?war room? near his office in Washington, DC. The ?war room? is where Senator Specter goes to discuss current events, potential Senate business, and his planned accomplishments for the day. In the room with him are his two top advisers, Joey Porter and Donovan McNabb. Joey Porter: I just read that oil has gone up something stupid?like $15 per barrel. That means gas is going to end up something crazy, like $5 per gallon. Donovan McNabb: Unemployment is way up as well, higher than it?s been since the 1980s. I just saw the announcement on CNN. Senator Specter: I also read that inflation was way up again, Israel just threatened to bomb Iran, and the Real World house is in shambles now that they drunk kid is coming back from rehab. What the heck should we do? Which crisis do I address first? I am an important Senator, after all. Joey Porter: How about getting me my Super Bowl ring! Donovan McNabb: Yeah, Belichick is a cheat...

Senator Specter Keeps Spygate Alive
2008-05-16 06:55:00
"We (the NFL) respectfully disagree with Senator Specter's characterization of the investigation conducted by our office. We are following up after yesterday's meeting with Matt Walsh." The NFL has to play nice, so you can see why they "respectfully" disagreed with Senator Specter. I, on the other hand, have no reason whatsoever to "respectfully" disagree. While a high-ranking United States Senator was meeting with a man about a football game, one could argue that there were other things going on that deserved his attention. I know what you're thinking. What else could possibly be happening in the real world that's more important than an NFL team stealing defensive signals? Maybe a few things... Some would argue that instead of wasting time meeting with Mr. Walsh, Senator Specter should have been meeting with the family of Cpl. Jessica A. Ellis. You see, while fighting in a war that Senator Specter supported, she was killed. Her death was announced by the military while...

2008-05-15 12:50:00
This is going to be an odd viewpoint for the Jets beat writer. As a Jets fan, which makes me a Patriot hater, I should want the Patriots investigated to the full extent of the Senator's powers. But I don't. Specter is blowing this was out of proportion and he is doing so to gain voting

Specter?s News Conference Comments
2008-05-14 19:23:00
Senator Arlen Specter’s (R-PA) news conference is apparently over as tidbits are starting to now hit the web. Specter met with Matt Walsh for about 3 hours or so yesterday and even showed him some photographs of the really famous people he got to talk to. I wonder if they watched home movies together? So without ...
Sarkozy and the Specter of May 68
2008-04-25 08:55:00
The Liquidator by Philippe Marlière Forty years on, the specter of May 68 continues to haunt France. A week before his election to the French presidency, Nicolas Sarkozy launched an astonishing attack on the "moral and intellectual permissiveness" of May 68. According to the rightwing candidate, the heirs of May 68 would be responsible for all French ills: the demise of traditions, the undermining of authority and the making of an "unethical capitalism" (the one of golden parachutes and rogue bosses). Ségolène Royal, his socialist opponent, led a campaign based on law and order issues, exalting the tricolor and the Marseillaise. To hammer home the fact that she was also spurning all things soixante-huitardes, Royal went as far as promising the creation of re-education camps for juvenile delinquents under the supervision of the army. In his latest book, André Glucksmann (a philosopher who has made the long journey from Maoism to neoconservatism) argues that Sarkozy is in...

Arlen Specter: Conservative?
2008-04-09 01:48:00
Did I write that correctly? Did you read it correctly? Yes on both counts. Specter Still Pushing Goodell
2008-03-10 01:00:00
Yes it’s time for an another edition of the Sphincter Puckers brought to you by U.S. Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA) who is lovingly known amongst these pages as Asshole Sphincter. Now apparently to the Senator from the great Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell isn’t doing enough to bring this whole Matt Walsh interview to a head. Sphincter wants the NFL to prove they are genuine in their efforts to work to an agreement with Walsh. He has asked gone as far as to ask Goodell to release the letters publicly between NFL representatives and the high powered Washington DC attorney, Michael Levy, who is representing the lowly golf pro and former video assistant. “I’d like to issue a challenge to the commissioner to make public the extensive exchange of correspondence between the league’s lawyers and Walsh’s lawyers,” Specter told the New York Times. The Senator, I would think contrary to his actions regarding this matter and ...

Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA) is still not happy with the NFL. Imagine that. Will Someone Shut This Specter Guy Up?
2008-02-14 15:44:00
I understand why steroids in baseball is an important issue that draws the interest of congress. If professional athletes use steroids, then college athletes will use steroids, and it will trickle down to high school athletes using them. That makes it something of national interest. But Spygate? I’m sorry, but if high school coaches are filming games trying to steal signals, I don’t really care. It’s not like it is harmful to the kids. And, let’s face it, this sort of stuff is a part of football. It always has been. Why do you think every coach covers his mouth up while calling in plays? Heck, teams have been known to send spies into other teams practices. That’s football. Yeah, you get caught, you get busted. There had to be a punishment and, honestly, I thought New England got off light. But why is congress — or, I should say, “a” congressman — getting involved in something so trivial compared to the national inter...

The ?Specter? of spy-gate surfaces at the Super Bowl!
2008-02-02 01:12:00
Besides being a nice example of alliteration, this week?s title is in reference to Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Specter who jumped on board and hijacked the Super Bowl news bandwagon. He didn?t try to re-focus the attention of the American people on important matters (like the violence in Kenya over the disputed presidential election). That would be too much of a downer while doing our part to support the economy by purchasing our 11-ounce bag of chips as part of the 11.2 million pounds of chips that are sold as part of Super Bowl parties.Specter held a press conference two days before the Super Bowl (note the timing!) to complain about a delay of several months in getting a response to requests for information about Commissioner Roger Goodel?s handling of the Patriot?s tapes. These are the tapes that were collected and destroyed four months ago as part of the spy gate investigation. Perhaps since Pennsylvania doesn?t vote in this week?s Super Tuesday election and no one cares about h...
Arlen Specter -- Lost Sight Of The Real Ball
2008-02-01 19:44:00
Arlen Specter has decided that this is his national priority."I am very concerned about the underlying facts on the taping, the reasons for the judgment on the limited penalties and, most of all, on the inexplicable destruction of the tapes," said Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., in a Thursday letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.I want to know why they squawk box that is my state Senator isn't as "concerned" about the destroyed emails of the White House? Why isn't he as "concerned" by the illegal spying of the government on US citizens? Why isn't he "very concerned" about a President that repeatedly breaks the law? Why isn't he "very concerned" about the business of this nation, especially as it relates to his prominent position on the Senate Judiciary Committee?Specter goes on to give lip service to these other matters, implying he is "concerned" about them too. The reality is that he is yet another rubber-stamp for the Bush Administration. He makes the waves of objection, ...

Arlen Specter Is For Corporation Immunity
2007-11-16 22:35:00
The most fascinating thing about hearings like the one about FISA yesterday in the Senate Judiciary Committee is watching Senators discuss issues amongst themselves. The reality these people live in is so different from ours. Sometimes it’s the arguments they use to comfort each other that freak me out the most. Here’s Arlen Specter arguing that giving retro-active immunity to corporations, like AT&T and Verizon who were the ones who physically tapped our phones and data-mined our calls and emails without warrants, isn’t a bad thing because, I don’t see, as I sit here, how anyone can prove their privacy was invaded. That they know what was done here. There’s one case under the Terrorist Surveillance Act where there was an inadvertent disclosure by the Federal government and somebody was able to show that they were subject to the program. But unless there would be something like that, I don’t see who’s going to be able to prove anything whether it’s against...

Another Reason to Dump Specter
2007-09-03 01:13:00
Senator Arlen Specter said Idaho Republican Larry Craig should try to withdraw his guilty plea to disorderly conduct in connection with an incident in an airport men's room and fight the case. "I think he could be vindicated," Specter, the senior Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said on the "Fox News Sunday" program. Specter, of Pennsylvania, said that Craig "hasn't resigned" from the Senate, only that he "intends to resign" as of Sept. 30. That gives Craig a month to fight the case in court, Specter said. If the case went to trial, Specter said Craig "wouldn't be convicted of anything." Specter Says Larry Craig Should Fight Restroom Case Yes, Specter is siding with U.S. Senator and public restroom weirdo Larry Craig, despite the overwhelming evidence against Craig, not to mention Craig's own admission of guilt. It's time for Republicans to take out the trash. Starting with Specter.

A Call To Duty; To Country -- A Letter to Arlen Specter
2007-07-18 21:13:00
I know I have been deathly quite lately, but the silence is now broken!I can no longer stomach the partisan ploys and rhetorical dances of the GOP!This is especially true when I consider that my own Senator -- Arlen Specter -- Stood up and was counted among those that wish to filibuster future and further debate, votes, and mentions of Iraq and the withdrawal of our troops. This nation is so disconnected from this war! Those are our kids dying on those dunes in Iraq! A generation is being destroyed and maimed for a failed policy built on lies, and consecrated with the blood of our fighting men & women. This is the saddest moment for me in this long struggle with a corrupt and power swollen Executive Branch. What must President Bush do to be challenged by his own party, and those of the Congress at large? Does no one see the future where the precedences he has set will only lead to greater corruptions of our democracy and the descent of this nation into a Dictatorship? Does no one ...

Sen. Arlen Specter: ?One day there will be a new attorney general, maybe so
2007-03-10 15:19:01
from the Washington Post by Paul Kane and Dan Eggen Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales agreed yesterday to change the way U.S. attorneys can be replaced, a reversal in administration policy that came after he was browbeaten by members of the Senate Judiciary Committee still angry over the controversial firings of eight federal prosecutors…. ….the administration has been battered by mounting allegations that several of the fired prosecutors — six of whom testified before Congress on Tuesday — had been the subject of intimidation, including improper telephone calls from GOP lawmakers or their aides, and alleged threats of retaliation by Justice Department officials. One prosecutor told lawmakers this week that he felt “leaned on” by a senior Republican senator, and Senate Democrats have readied subpoenas for five key members of Gonzales’ inner circle of advisers…. Specter's Judiciary "Swan Song"
2006-12-05 03:18:02
Here?s more on another Repug mess for the incoming Democratic congress to try and clean up.As noted in this Inquirer article, Arlen Specter, soon-to-be-former head of the Senate Judiciary Committee, is basically washing his hands of the domestic spying mess that he and his fellow Repugs helped exacerbate by refusing to hold Bushco accountable to existing FISA law from 1978."I think it would be ideal to have congressional oversight on the program in detail, and I look forward to what will happen next year," he told an American Bar Association gathering. "I have grave reservations as to how successful we will be, given the administration's unwillingness to share those secrets."Specter states in the article that he?s pessimistic that the Democrats will be able to be able to come up with a solution, and I think he?s right, since the only ?solution? that Bushco will consider is one in which they obtain total power to basically bypass congressional oversight. However, the quote that grabb...
Night of all Specters
2006-12-02 15:53:07
by Alina PopescuSaint Andrew/Sfantul Andrei was the first one to preach Christian beliefs on what is now Romanian territory. When November 30 was fixed as a day to celebrate his life and accomplishments, the image of saint image was combined in the conscience of early Christians with pagan beliefs of the former spiritual rituals, fact shown by the magical acts of Night of Saint Andrew.Eve of Saint Andrew is dedicated to rituals that might seem pagan, meant to protect people, their households and the animals they breed. They were further thought as governed by Saint Andrews so that the protective rituals get a divine aspect. This Eve is thought to be one of the few moments when the barriers between seen and unseen disappear. A night of magic, of specters and of unusual events. Saint Andrew allows good and evil to mix territories during this special night. Specters are thought to walk freely, steeling people s minds and depriving their crops and livestock of fertility. Romanian peasan...
