How I taught myself speed reading and how it saved me
2008-02-13 04:29:00
I find the speed reading tips from evernerve.com highly informative. I went through a self-taught speed reading course about 7 years ago in my preparation for the medical school entrance exam, verbal section. Before that, I was never a good reader. Having come here when I was 12.5, I hated reading because I was never able to understand anything. I hated English class. I detested essays. I abhorred anything involving literature. My reading speed at the time was in the 200's wpm with poor comprehension ranking in the 17th percentile compared to all medical school entrance test takers. After 6 weeks of intensive training and months of practice, my reading comprehension went up to the 87th percentile. Over the past 7 years, I've been using the same method in all of my reading activities. I find it extremely useful because it allows me to grasp the main idea in the shortest amount of time possible. My current reading speed is about 700-750 wpm with average comprehension. I'm still...

World Memory Championships and Mind Mapping
2008-01-29 11:12:00
I saw an amazing TV programme called "The Mentalists" about the World Memory Championships 2007 held in Bahrain with two main competitors - Ben Pridmore from the UK and Dr Gunther Karsten from Germany, the latter winning. Ben won the World Memory Champion in 2004 in a ten-discipline competition. He also holds the official world record for memorizing the order of a randomly shuffled 52-card deck in 26.28 seconds. He beat the previous record by 5 seconds.Ben's world records to date:- 795 binary digits in 5 minutes - 3915 binary digits in 30 minutes - 99 historical dates in 5 minutes - 312 playing cards in 10 minutes - 1404 playing cards in an hour Ben Pridmore on WikipediaBen Pridmore's blog "Zoomy"The World Memory Championships have been running since 1991, the brainchild (sorry for the pun) of Tony Buzan. Apparently memory training is a skill open to anyone of average intelligence although such extreme levels are achieved only by blinkered determination and daily practice. For u...

Speed Reading: Part I
2008-01-26 03:54:00
Reading is one of the biggest “inevitable” of our life. Whether it is an English assignment, or an office report or simply a gaze at an attractive billboard we are all continuously reading. Since we all have to do it, why not improve our ‘reading skills’?Reading skills in my opinion refer to two things. The first is the speed of reading. The other is the comprehension ability. I am going to go through some simple methods of improving ones ‘reading speed’ aka ‘Speed Reading’ which will be covered in two parts. Here is part I which will explain what speed reading is.What is Speed Reading?Speed reading is the act of quickly absorbing written information. The goal is to read very quickly, but at the same time retain the information. Otherwise it would not benefit anybody. The average college student reads between 250 and 350 words per minute on fiction and non-technical materials. A "good" reading speed is around 500 to 700 words per minute, but some people can read 1000...

The Evelyn Wood Seven-Day Speed Reading and Learning Program

Stanley D. Frank "Ordinary reading skills won't do in today's world because there is too much information and too little time to assimilate it. If you read at the average speed of 250 words per minute, you're at a major disadvantage trying to take in the facts and concepts you need to perform well in school or on the job. For that matter, you're at a severe disadvantage even at speeds of 400-600 words per minute-a rate that's in the top range for the most experienced students and adults. So what is the solution to this dilemma? After years of experience as an educator and publishing executive, I've become convinced that the techniques we've developed at Evelyn Wood are by far the best response to the information explosion. Furthermore, our approach provides the fastest, most effective path to superior academic achievement. For the first time in a book for the general public, I'm unveiling all the secrets that have made the completely revised Evelyn Wood dynamic learning prog...
