Splog War
2009-04-08 20:03:00 We are in the middle of a major battle against sploggers (spam bloggers). Currently there are about 100 or more of these garbage blogs created daily. While we harden our security against them, we're going to have to shut down the open signups. You can still register for a totally free blog, but you'll need ...
A Rant on Splog Sites...Use Google Alerts
2008-10-26 15:31:00 Yesterday I wrote this post on Ann Arbor Real Estate Talk. I rarely do duplicate content on my outside blog and here, just on new listings and market reports. I received a Google Alert about 30 minutes after I posted it so I knew it had been indexed. If I am posting dublicate content I first post on my outside blog, wait for it to get indexed and then post here. There is no problem with posting your blog here and your other sites. However, yesterday early in the evening, I received a new Google Alert on my post about Short Sales in Ann Arbor, Saline and Ypsilanti Township. It was copied WORD for WORD, and said ADMIN. Google Blogs Alert for: houses for sale in ann arbor. I follow lot of Google Alerts. Even if you don't want to set up that many, please do your name. Do NOT click the SPLOG SITE Short Sales in Ann Arbor, Saline and Ypsilanti TownshipBy admin Buyers are able to purchase these homes for less than the what is owed to the banks. To purchas...

10 steps to a more splog-free WordPress blog
2008-01-16 16:58:00 Last Thursday, I realized that this blog was being scraped. I’m sure it was being scraped before, but I never really wanted to spend time looking into it. A blog takes so much time to write and manage, that I didn’t want to add another task to my blogging plate. But now that I have seen the sploggers in action, I realize how truly irritating and damaging sploggers are. But I guess that’s the case with all theft. Anyways, I turned to you, my readers, to get your advice, and I got some amazing tips from the people that responded. I also did a little extra searching around, plus Darren Hoyt wrote a post with some good links in it, so here’s a summary of 10 ways to stop sploggers. Part 1: 4 ways to find out if you’re being splogged I found out about one of the scrapers via FeedBurner’s Uncommon Use feature. When you’re checking your feed stats in FeedBurner, make sure to keep an eye on the Uncommon Uses section to see if any sites you’re ...

The Quick Excerpt Splog and Why You Shouldn?t Worry
2007-11-13 20:17:00 Have you've ever seen a trackback to your blog that has a "Here's a quick excerpt" line in it? When you look at the blog that sent this you will see an excerpt of your article that's around 350 characters long surrounded by meaningless text. It looks like a normal blog except that it is obviously generated by a scraping program. Many people7 Zoom(s)

Content Thieving Splog is OFFLINE!
2007-07-04 07:16:00 Well isn't this interesting… Yesterday I ranted about a splog that was stealing content from my (and many others) blogs. This morning I filed a complaint with Goolge's AdSense abuse and began my quest to hunt down Mr. Splogger and his domain host. The goal in finding direct contact info was to find out where to file a ...
Splogs: Spam Blogs and Stolen Content
2007-06-06 02:29:00 Copyright infringement is the sincerest form of flattery. What's a Splog? A splog or "spam blog" is a blog that steals content from other web sites, then aggregates and republishes all or some of the content on its own blog. Splogs are created to promote and increase search engine ranking of affiliated web sites, and/or to make money from ads shown on the splog. Typically splogs are automated, but they can also be manual copy & paste. A recent study indicated that 56% of all blogs are spam, and there are over 575 thousand splogs reported. (more…)

The log of a "splog"
2007-04-21 20:18:00 Not very pleasing, but, as I discovered, there's a "splog", meaning, a spam-blog, that's been siphoning content from my own blog for a few months now, probably by logging on to my RSS feed, I'm not sure. It's on a server called 120host, and here's the URL, where, with the possible exception of anything that involves javascript in the post, it's been copying off of my blog and, if I'm sending a trackback ping to some Wordpress blogs (it's powered by their software), it seems to follow suit.According to this blogger here, who's also been getting content siphoned from this server:It's a "splog", or a spam blog. A splogger syphons high-quality content from an original blog (We are talking high-quality in baesian terms. It can be utter trite as far as humans are concerned.) Visitors from search engines then visit the splog and drive the ad revenue.I have quite a few of them attached, although the 120host is unique because apparently it seeks me personally (e.g. it double-source...
Yahoo Pipes the Ultimate Splog Tool
2007-02-11 11:26:02 As I noticed elsewhere already, Yahoo had gone crazy. Now it seems it’s a deliberate strategy. It looks like they’ve got offended by Google’s near-monopoly and decided to aid those who are more than happy to exhaust Googlebot and Google spam-filters with millions of pages of duplicate content. First Yahoo makes their Y360 blog service to ...
