Facebook Ad’s Are No Longer ‘Sponsored’, Now ‘Featu

Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook can safely be called the largest Social Network of today. Literally everyone is using or has at one point used a Facebook account. Facebook for Brands has been a runaway success. People now rely on the brand’s Facebook Page for information, news and offers. Until now, Facebook has been showing Ad’s on the right hand side of the News Feed. Brands pay to get their Ad shown to a certain target group. With the latest development, the Ad’s leave the side bar and enter your Newsfeed. This may seem as an intrusion to some, as you will see advertisements between stories of your friends and family. Facebook had tried this from 2006-2009 but stopped it after user complaints. This time around, they promise it is different. Facebook, as an advertising platform, has immense potential, given that now the social networking giant boasts of more than 800 million users. Facebook has so far limited ads to the right hand column of the page, but even then the ads were more often than not relevant to the user. For an ad to appear on the page it depended on how the user’s friends had previously interacted with the brand or organization and was directly or indirectly endorsed by them. Coming January 2012 there will a major change in Facebook’s advertising/marketing strategy. ‘Sponsored Stories’ or sponsored ads will appear directly in the user’s news feed. The other dynamics deciding ‘Which ad should appear?’ will remain the same. There are concerns that this move will amount to intrusion of the user’s space. For 10 days, 2 Billion Facebook ad impressions were studied by TBG Digital, a Facebook Ads API service provider. What they found out is pretty interesting — Sponsored Stories has the highest click through rate (CTR). It has 46 percent higher CTR than other display ad formats. It’s cost effective as well. Compared to other ad units of Facebook, Sponsored Stories has 20 percent lower cost-per-click (CPC). It also received 18 percent lower cost-per-fan. The report gives advertisers some useful insight about Sponsored Stories. It clearly establishes the importance of keeping Sponsored Stories as a part of ads mix.
