Soccer Player Injured "Stretching" - Is That What They Call It There?
2007-08-08 19:24:00 As Americans, we often laugh uproariously at the sight of the Euro football soccer players who go down in a heap and roll around on the ground like they have just been punctured with a javelin. After getting carried off on a stretcher, they miraculously return to action minutes later. Many of us assumed they were just acting. Well, it's possible they are not. Maybe soccer just doesn't breed toughness. Consider this story out of England, concerning one of their football soccer players:"Reading striker Leroy Lita will miss the Premiership opener on Sunday at Manchester United ... The 22-year-old, who could be out up to a month, injured a muscle while stretching in bed.""Stretching" in bed? Listen, I don't know what they call it across the pond, but in America, we don't call it "stretching." So, football soccer fans, next time you have an inkling your favorite star is playing up an injury, just think: at least he didn't do it while "stretching."

2007-06-07 16:50:00 Another tough day on the court? No, it turns out you're spending way too much time playing simulated sports with video games. And, in an ironic twist, it seems that if you aren't already healthy and fit it may lead to real pain and muscle soreness. A recent letter in The New England Journal of Medicine details the first documented case of acute ?Wiiitis? caused by extended play on the Nintendo Wii video game system. With the Wii video game system the player faces a video screen and moves a handheld controller handheld controller that senses three-dimensional movements. And in the tennis game, the player makes the same arm movements as in the real game of tennis, however, a player often plays for many hours. Unlike in the real sports, physical strength and endurance are not limiting factors -- gamers are engrossed and don't realize they are exercising. The down-side: Just like with any other physical activity ... you should stretch first. And, you should give your muscles ...

More Evidence Against the Hormone Theory in Women's Sports Injuries
2007-02-26 00:36:00 Women's Sports Injuries: It's Not Just The HormonesFrom ScienceDaily.comThe long-held belief that women have more sports injuries than men because of the difference in hormones is just not true. Hormones certainly play a role according to orthopaedic surgeon Kimberly J. Templeton, MD, spokesperson for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and Associate Professor with the University of Kansas Medical Center, Department of Orthopedics. "There is definitely input from the hormones but there are other musculoskeletal differences between men and women."Dr. Templeton points out how men land differently than women after taking that basketball shot. "Men flex their hips and knees when they land. Women tend to land with their hips and knees straight -- causing increased tension on the ACL. That's one of the reasons why women have more ACL ("anterior cruciate ligament') injuries than do men." Templeton points out that these types of injuries can be "career enders" to young female a...
