Bears Already Bungling Sunday Night Spotlight
2009-11-20 04:31:00 Welcome once again to the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Halas Circus. My only question -- since this is the "big top" -- where are the elephants, the clowns and the bearded lady? In today's misadventures of team McCaskey, we have Lovie Smith, Jerry Angelo and Jay Cutler in starring roles. All three have turned on the red light regarding requests to be interviewed as pre-game guests by NBC's Bob Costas before Sunday night's Bears-Eagles tee off at the house that Ted Phillips built. ...
Comic heroes: Chicago's own breaking into the spotlight
2009-11-12 05:04:00 Hannibal BuressBy Kyra KylesRedEyeDon't expect "Def Comedy Jam" high-jinx when it comes to Chicago-born comics Deon Cole, Erica Watson and Hannibal Buress. The trio--currently in the limelight on-screen and behind the scenes--don't write much material about dead (and living) rappers or relentlessly rip audience members who sit too close to the stage. Nor do they necessarily tell raucous story-jokes in the tradition of Def Jam legends Chris Tucker, Mike Epps, D.L. Hughley or the late, great, Bernie Mac. ...
tMF SPOTLIGHT: Sam Worthington takes the lead + the buzz on Clash of the Ti
2009-10-06 10:52:00 I don't care that he was just a finalist to play James Bond. But I care to take note that it took more than 7 years for his first critically-acclaimed role, Somersault, to finish. I also care and is quite interested to take a closer look at his new projects: from "Avatar", "Terminator Salvation" and "Clash of the Titans" to "The Tourist" and "The Candidate". I also care and is quite interested in reading what he's up to:I also care that the public are getting their 12 dollars' worth when they go to a movie, and that they're not coming out not wanting to ever see a movie with me in it again. I don't care what people think of me as a person, but I do care what people think of my work, and whether I'm investing enough into it. That's Sam Worthington talking, of course. In perspective, is he the guy whose going to continue the tradition set by his fellow Aussie actors - including Mel Gibson, Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce, Hugh Jackman and many others? If you're going to ask that que...
Spotlight Review: Zombieland
2009-10-05 06:06:00 Starring: Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, Abigail BreslinDirector: Ruben FleischerRelease Date: October 2, 2009Running Time: 80 min MPAA Rating: RDistributor: Sony Pictures- - -I'm not one for that weird horror/comedy genre. I really did not enjoy Sam Raimi's Drag Me To Hell. And there are very few exceptions to this rule for me (see: Dead Snow). But director Ruben Fleischer could really change my mind, in a big way. His feature-length directorial debut, Zombieland, is hilarious, and breathes new life into the zombie genre just when it needed the most (the vampires have been leading the game for years now). The premise is like most zombie films: most of the world dies, survivors deal with zombies. The film is narrated by Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg). He's an introverted gamer with irritable bowel syndrome who chooses to spend his weekends at home playing World of War Craft and drinking Code Red Mountain Dew. His social dysfunctions and phobias actually prepared ...

Spotlight on THE VAMPIRE DIARIES Star Nina Dobrev
2009-09-10 17:29:00 Nina Dobrev with the TV Addict’s trusty sidekick Mac WHY YOU KNOW HER: Before heading south of the border to headline THE VAMPIRE DIARIES, Nina Dobrev was perhaps best known for her portrayal of DEGRASSI: THE NEXT GENERATION’s very own version of ‘Juno MacGuff,’ full-time high school student/mom and part-time model (natch!) Mia Jones. ON THE SUCCESS OF HER FELLOW DEGRASSI ALUM: Not that Dobrev really needs to remind us, but many DEGRASSI grads have a knack for going onto even bigger and better things. “Drake [Aubrey Graham] is doing music, Shenae [Grimes] is on 90210 and Jake Epstein is starring in Spring Awakening. We’re all kind of moving on to new chapters in our career, yet DEGRASSI still remains a huge part of our lives. [Prior to starting shooting THE VAMPIRE DIARIES] I went back and did a couple of episodes for the new season.” ON THE DARK SIDE OF STARDOM: As fellow Canadian Shenae Grimes discovered first hand, there is a downside t...

And it has. Everybody gets it. The response has been unbelievable.” Anyone who doubts just how much momentum has been gathering for this show didn’t see 2,500 people cramming themselves into an auditorium during Comic Con to get a glimpse of the rising stars, who also managed to inspire thousands of screaming fans to line up at Hot Topic stores across the country so they cou...

Spotlight: Music Covers on the Behance Network
2009-07-15 21:26:00 Graphic art and music have had a long-standing connection; from the psychedelic concert posters of the 1960s to the Rolling Stones' interactive album covers (a la Sticky Fingers), the mediums are constantly colliding to create beautiful collaborative forms. Album covers are often an artist's best shot at a first impression -- they must convey the mood of the music within while staying true to the band's own image.
Museum Spotlight: National Museum of Mexican Art
2009-06-22 21:16:00 If my profile of Nicole Gallery started the series, "Bright Colors and Uplifting Art from Countries in Conflict", then our next installment will be the Nation Mexican Museum in Pilsen. The above sentence sounds flip, but I'm fascinated by cheerful art that comes from artists who grew up in a countries mired in conflict, and contrast that against the depressing work of artists who were raised in a place of privilege. I recently read the biography of a artist who described the violence, grit and angst in her work as stemming from feeling socially alienated as an adolescent. Really? That's the best she's got? Anyway, currently on display is Miradas: Mexican Art from the Bank of American Collection, and Muralla: Sobre Lienzo,...

Spotlight on the blues: BB King - Blues On The Bayou
2009-06-04 09:01:00 B.B. King plays a kind of universal blues, an eveyman's blues. I know a lot of people who claim that they do not like blues music, but they like B.B. King. This makes me laugh and kind of proves my point. It really comes down to being able to tap your foot and getting into the grove. Blues on the Bayou is a laid back, tap your foot, get into the groove kind of album. It easly puts you in the mood, and many who have heard it love it.When he made this album Mr. King said this was a "back to basics jam ... with my conviction that this current band is my best ever." Blues Song in the Spotlight - Sitting on Top of the World
2009-05-20 07:38:00 The folk blues song Sitting on Top of the World has been done by so many great musicians over the years that I thoght I would do a post on it.It was originally written by Walter Vinson and Lonnie Chatmon, core members of the Mississippi Sheiks, a popular country blues band of the 1930s. According to Wikipedia; In May 1930 Charlie Patton recorded a version of the song (with altered lyrics) called ?Some Summer Day.? During the next few years cover-versions of "Sitting on Top of the World" were recorded by a number of artists: The Two Poor Boys, The Famous Hokum Boys, Big Bill Broonzy, Sam Collins, Milton Brown and Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys. After Milton Brown recorded it for Bluebird Records the song became a staple in the repertoire of western swing bands."Sitting on Top of the World" has become a standard of traditional American music. The song has been widely recorded in a variety of different styles ? folk, blues, country, bluegrass, rock ? often with considerable variations a...

Harmonica Web Site in the Spotlight
2009-05-09 09:01:00 I recently wrote a post on some of the great YouTube tutorials for harmonica players. And I was contacted by Tony Eyers who operates the web site Harmonica Academy. I was pleased to hear from him because I think harmonica fans will want to check his site out.According the his bio;Tony was born in Australia and began playing harmonica in the 1970's, inspired by Jim Fitting while studying at Yale University. He returned to Australia in the 1980's, and became a well known blues player.I spent some time going through his web site and I really like the instruction provided there. Very easy to understand, includes harmonica tabs as well as sound files that help you understand how the riffs being taught should sound. Each lesson builds on past lessons. And even though I have been playing for years and have looked at a lot of different instruction methods I got a lot of good information from going through his instructions. And plan to go back often. For example he has some blues harmonica...

Music blog in the spotlight: Indieblogheaven
2009-04-20 09:01:00 I usually reserve the spotlight for blogs that are all about the blues music. But then again, I like to break my own rules everynow and then. And what better way to do that then to introduce you to one of my favorite music blogs, Indieblogheaven. Their tag line pretty much sums it up, "Music for people with taste."According to them, they are;... a music blog, primarily focusing on indie bands/artists. This may include some americana, pop, punk, or whatever we might like at the time. There might be some pop culture sprinkled in periodically. What I like about them the most is that they are consistant. You can count on these guys to deliver good new indie bands day in and day out. They have been doing this for years now.I remember the day I realized that they had linked to my blog, it was cool because then I realized that I was included in that group of "music for people with taste."

Spotlight on LIE TO ME Star Tim Roth
2009-01-21 21:54:00 Why Tim Roth is “Spotlight” Worthy: Tonight, after sixty plus movies to his credit, he will jump from the big to the small screen with his new FOX series LIE TO ME. On which he plays DR. CAL LIGHTMAN, the world’s leading deception expert who studies facial expressions and involuntary body language to discover not only if someone is lying, but why. Why Television: “They [producers] like to get us in their 40’s,” joked Roth. “They wait until you’ve got kids and you’re ready to go home after work rather than another hotel room.” Take Two: When asked what (outside of the proximity to his family) attracted Roth to the series he responded, “I thought the character [Dr. Cal Lightman] was actually kind of interesting. So if we are going to be doing this for the long haul, which we may. The character would hold the interest for the audience as much as he would hold the interest for me.” (more…)

Spotlight on HOUSE star Lisa Edelstein
2009-01-15 21:24:00 Lisa Edelstein with the TV Addict in Los Angeles, January 2009 Simply put, we did not see this coming. When theTVaddict.com recently put out a call for questions for some of your favorite FOX stars, we never would have guessed how many Lisa Edelstein fans there are out there. The show after all is called HOUSE, not CUDDY (although judging from your reaction, perhaps a title change is in order!) That said, after being given the fantastic opportunity to interview Edelstein face to face, you can now count your very own TV Addict among the Edelstein die-hards. Here are three reasons why. She is a dog person: So much so that when asked whether or not she had the chance to see Marley & Me she responded, “No, no, no I won’t see the movie. I actually won’t see it. I was completely traumatized by My Dog Skip. It was a kid’s movie that I saw at a benefit. I practically crawled out of the theater, while the kids were all like “Wasn’t it funny when&hellip...

The OTHER New President: Spotlight On 24’s Cherry Jones
2008-11-20 18:16:00 The TV Addict on the set of 24 with Cherry Jones, August 2008 What exactly does one do for an encore after creating the Tony award winning role of Sister Aloysius in Broadway’s critically acclaimed stage production of DOUBT? If you’re actress Cherry Jones, you decide to trade in the job security that comes with 708 performances in a critically acclaimed play and parlay it into a higher profile, yet far less secure faux political gig. Hillary Clinton may have failed to become the first female president in United States history, but the same can’t be said of Jones, who steps into the oval office as president-elect Allison Taylor on 24 this Sunday on FOX (Global TV in Canada). In the grand tradition of 24, voters… er, viewers will have about five minutes to reflect on the fact that 24 gave us an African-American president (Dennis Haysbert’s David Palmer) several years before Barack Obama took office and what legacy Jones’ Taylor will have on the pop culture/pol...

Spotlight on TERMINATOR Star Levin Rambin
2008-09-29 21:36:00 Even though Levin Rambin can currently be seen playing John Connor’s new squeeze Riley on the second season of TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CHRONICLES, fans will most likely recognize her first as Lily Montgomery, the autistic daughter of Jackson Montgomery on ALL MY CHILDREN. On starting out in soaps: “After four years on ALL MY CHILDREN I knew I didn’t want to stay any longer. And getting this job was a really good way to get me out to Los Angeles.” The perils of Los Angeles: On paper, a beautiful and young actress like Levin Rambin may seem like the ideal candidate to fall into the “Young Hollywood” trap, but don’t tell her that. “I have to be in control of things at all time. I can’t even smoke pot. I’m not as badass as those kind of people and I definitely don’t see myself going down that path.” (more…)

TV Spotlight: Survivor Gabon and Big Brother 10.
2008-09-26 23:06:00 Big Brother 10: It’s been a couple of weeks now since the season finale of Big Brother 10 and I have had some time to reflect on this past summer of Big Brother and Dan winning the $500,000. You know, the back to basics season with a few previously used features like one week of America’s Player, America’s Vote and so on was a welcome to change and addition to the season. The season of Big Brother 10 was one of the best seasons of all time, BB did a great job with it.Of course, you have to start with the 13 houseguests that entered that house back in early-mid July, first and most important, they didn’t know each other at all, that’s key, no one had an advantage of knowing someone going into the game. Second, you had a wide range group of people from age 22 to age 75, boy, Jerry the 75 year old man fighting in the house, week in and week out and he made it to the final three, all thought his comments to Dan on his religon was outrages, this is a game and it even took me so...
Spotlight on HEROES Star Zachary Quinto
2008-09-22 23:52:00 In anticipation of tonight’s third season premiere of HEROES [see preview], theTVaddict.com thought we’d spend a few moments shining a spotlight on actor Zachary Quinto, who has risen to fame playing America’s favorite super-villain Sylar. On the new season: In a far more diplomatic manner than this TV Addict might have put it, Zachary Quinto promises that the new Chapter of HEROES, titled “Villains” will be far more entertaining that last season’s suck fest underwhelming “Generations” installment, “I think that the scripts this season are just, you know, more exciting and more action-packed, and more dynamic than ever. I think it just keeps getting better and more - you know, every time I open a script it’s truly a thrill.” On what’s in store for Sylar: There’s a lot of unexpected turns this year for my character and every time I open a script there’s just a different kind of challenge. Whether it’s a either ...
