Springtime

Same old story as ever, it's a lack of time, energy or both.I got plenty of pictures to post, but it takes a lot of time to sort them out and pick out the best or funniest ones. Anyway I'm still sorting out pictures from our last X-mas visit to England and a week ago on Friday we took a very nice cycle tour in the Betuwe area along the river Linge which tour is also known as the "blossom route". I also took some pics during that tour, but I still haven't sort them out.For now I leave you with some gorgeous pics that my wife N. took during a cycle tour the day before we went on our cycle tour along the river Linge. The pictures were taken at the bulb region around Lisse. You can see more pics on N.'s cartoon weblog (page 2).Correction: I mentioned that the pics of my wife N. were taken around Lisse, but that wasn't correct. The pics were taken at the area around Schagen at the province of North Holland.

Thursday Thirteen - Springtime is jumping time
2008-05-22 02:13:00
We took out our moonwalk for the first time in over a year. Not exactly a simple task as this entailed lugging it outside, finding a hole the size of a mouse on the bottom, lugging it back in, going to Home Depot to buy some PVC cement, patching it, waiting a week for it to dry and finally setting it back up the next weekend (I assume there was no mouse inside, but we did run it with the exhaust open just in case). In honor of the occasion (as for all occasions), I took out my camera to capture the bouncing kids. I think these kids take jumping to an Olympic sport, whether it be in the snow, off the couch or in the moonwalk. Here are thirteen shots of our jumping kids. Yee haw!! Cannonball!! --- Thanks for reading this feed. Please stop by to comment!
Springtime is Plant Upkeep Time
2008-05-21 04:49:00
Springtime is Plant Upkeep Time Spring is usually considered a time of fresh beginnings and rebirth. For plants it is a very active period as they arise from their winter nap. For gardeners this is a very active stage for not only outdoor plants but our house plants as well. Spring is the ideal time for house plant maintenance. Fertilizing plants in the spring and summer periods will give the best results. A beneficial rule of thumb to call upon when fertilizing is that less really is more. Don't fertilize a plant that has just been re-potted for a few months or a new plant just brought home from the nursery. The fertilizer nutrients are already in a nursery plant and the fresh soil of a re-potted plant. I also evaluate my plants in the spring to determine if they need re-potting. There are 3 basic methods to tell if your house plant needs re-potting: * If the roots are protruding out of the drainage hole. * If the roots have completely filled the pot and are sprouting around in ...
Springtime shrimp
2008-05-16 00:06:00
Ready...set...PEEL!Springtime in Copenhagen often brings with it a change in diet. As the trees and flowers blossom and bloom, those often talked-about new potatoes begin to arrive, barbeques are fired up for the first time in several months, and so on and so forth. The other day I had an amusing discussion while eating what I was told was a springtime dish worthy of the season at hand - fresh shrimp. The instructions for eating were simple and non-negotiable - take a piece of rugbrod (extremely dark and heavy bread Danes typically love), spread with margarine, then pile it with little shrimps you have painstakingly peeled yourself. Salt and pepper was also permitted. What wasn't permitted was lemon, which to me seemed like an obvious addition to bring out the flavour. 'No, no, no!', I was admonished. Because what matters is the taste of fresh shrimp. I pointed out that adding lemon was really no different then adding salt and pepper, but this was to no avail. This provoked me to su...

2008-05-05 16:24:00
We all know words words or phrases that instill in us a wonderful sense of joy and contentment. For my 14-year old, I think the word ‘Dinnertime!’ or the phrase ‘Steak for dinner!’ would be his top choice. I know lots of folks who would love to hear ‘Time for dessert!’ or ‘How ’bout some ...
It's SPRINGTIME - start a garden now
2008-05-04 07:27:00
SPRINGTIME ON MAUI It's time to plant a garden, what are you going to grow? Do you have lots of pretty flowers and plants in your garden already? Your local garden store has varieties that will thrive in your area. Plant some things that don't need a lot of water and attention. Buy some seeds and plant yourself a veggie garden. Pole beans are easy to grow and good for you. Cherry tomatoes are almost foolproof. Kids like to help too. If you're thinking about moving to Maui, so you can grow a garden all year round, you might have questions about what can grow. Call me for more information: Georgina M. Springtime and Fresh Food
2008-05-01 17:52:00
I frequently mention to our readers here that I belong to an organic produce co-op. Honestly, I don’t think I could have made my switch to a vegetarian life without it. I am lucky to also live in an area where I can snatch up fresh produce pretty much year round. Never fear dear readers. Because I have found an entire directory of Farmers Markets for you all to browse and hunt through. www.farmersmarket.com They list the locations as well as the hours and time of year the markets are open. Now, would it be worth a drive for you to pick up your fresh produce form a farmers market? Why, of course it would. Depending upon how far that drive was. Here is the low down on Farmer’s Markets vs shopping for produce at a place like Walmart. Walmart has centrally located shipping centers. All products are received, and then sent off to be “made ready for stores”. Now, imagine that a cute little tomato is picked off the vine for Walmart customers. It is carefully packaged to avoid br...

Springtime Pests Identify And Control
2008-04-16 00:00:00
Living in Texas, we are all well aware of the vast numbers of insects and spiders living alongside us, in our homes, gardens, and lawns. Some can be toxic to the touch while other kinds can be quite helpful because they eat other harmful insects. Knowing what kind of pests can enter your house and lawn area can be useful in getting rid of harmful ones and how to react when you're caught in a bug situation.
Springtime in the Rockies
2008-04-15 19:27:00
Springtime has come to Colorado. Which means it’ll be in the 70s today and they say it could snow tomorrow. But let’s enjoy the nice weather, shall we? I took the dog over to the open space at Davidson Mesa this morning and snapped a couple shots from the overlook at the west end of the park. This first shot is of the Boulder Valley, and that cluster of buildings in the distance at the foot of the mountains is the University of Colorado campus. Then I swung the camera north a bit for this shot of Long’s Peak, the 14er closest to us here. It’ll start greening up here in the next week, I imagine. Meanwhile, hope the Spring Fever doesn’t hit you too hard (or, if it does, that you aren’t trapped inside all day). Feel free to link us to pictures of what it looks like at your place… ————-212;- Now playing: Juliette and the Licks - “Mind Full of Daggers”

Springtime in DC: Nature's Answer to Zoloft
2008-04-13 17:07:00
I had just about had it with this stinking wet, wussy Washington weather. This winter's extreme cold and never-ending sleet drove me to buy a puffy down coat about as flattering as one of those inflatable Sumo wrestling suits; my popsicle toes forced me to break down and join the hideous cult of the Uggs. I'm a Southern California desert chick that never owned a coat until I was 18 and has separate sections of my closet for casual, dressy and beach/pool-only flipflops. Every January - March the seasonal depression and gloom of the area just slays me. After the Christmas decorations are stowed away, the cold, grey, freezing winds make the yearnings for my old California towns creep into my heart. But I exited the plane at BWI this week after a long visit back to SoCal, and I stepped into an idyllic Washington spring. All the trees had bloomed, there were fields of daffodils everywhere and I remembered why I have loved living here these last 10 years. It's like the DC weat...

Well, it’s definitely spring here. It snows but melts right away. The weather is warming up. Oh yes, and the other day we had our first rumbles of thunder, meaning the thunderstorm season ...
Springtime
2008-04-01 08:40:00
I'm pleased to announce that things are now back in order after a brief mishap involving a faulty hard drive, a year's worth of irretrievable data, and one very disappointed (but not disheartened) girl. Thank you for all of your kind words and support! I'm starting fresh with a blank slate and looking forward to recreating lost designs, streamlining and reorganizing. Meanwhile spring has arrived - quite a timely parallel, for the season's fresh start is the most beautiful of all.Above, a collection of snapshots from my Easter Sunday: Leaving school and city behind, I returned home to find a rambling and charmingly haphazard garden alive with blossoms and bluebirds (to my surprise). While the feathery visitors were far too elusive for my lens, I managed well enough with some close-ups of my father's prize daffodils. And after seeing delicate white petals flutter from tree branches, I couldn't help but recall a passage from my girlhood favorite, Anne of Green Gables. I gathered...
It’s Springtime and Agents see surge in human smuggling
2008-03-30 23:58:00
Though springtime typically sees a spike in illegal border crossings, activity has been heavier than usual in Laredo, immigration officials said. In the past two months, agents have thwarted several attempts to smuggle people in large tractor-trailers, charging 41 people — American truck drivers and others — with smuggling. They detained 376 undocumented immigrants from Mexico and Central America, each of whom paid $500 to $3,000 for the trip. The discoveries were made by Border Patrol agents working at inland checkpoint stations, such as the one on Interstate 35 north of Laredo. The agents turned the American truck drivers over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which works with the U.S. attorney’s office to prosecute them.
