Bulls totally beat the Spurs
2009-10-30 03:54:00 The Bulls just beat the Spurs. Did you know that was going to happen? I didn't know that was going to happen. But it did. And they looked damn good doing it. The Bulls won 92-85, shooting only 41% from the field, but grabbing 52 rebounds in the game, and holding the Spurs to only 42%. They played a highly effective defensive game, and were good enough on offense, if not spectacular. Most importantly, they beat a team far better than they are. Here's the report card....

Talking Off-Season With Jeff of Project Spurs
2009-06-30 16:46:00 We are talking to lots of team bloggers and getting their takes on what their squads will be doing in the off-season. Now we have Jeff of the great Spurs blog, Project Spurs. Make sure to check them out and stay up to date on everything Spurs.1. Let's first talk about the Spurs big trade. Getting Richard Jefferson for Obricio and some other old guys, how happy did that make you feel? How close were to you writing that the Spurs front office really wasn't doing their job?So happy I packed Oberto's bag, got him a 1-way ticket to Milwaukee and lied to the Dept. of Homeland Security that he is illegally in the USA and needs to be deported immediately to Argentina. Said to Bowen thanks for everything, see you at your jersey retirement party in SA and asked Thomas "Can we get you back instead of Oberto and Bowen?" That's how happy I was. Seriously the Spurs lacked that athletic small forward. It was very apparent in the Mavs series when Howard was having his way with the Spurs. This w...
A New Way to Defend the Spurs?
2009-04-01 16:56:00 The Thunder have upset the Spurs twice this season, I think there might be a key to what they do defensively. In the two games the Thunder have won, the Spurs shot about 24% from the three point line. The Spurs take jumpers 72% of the time, teams should clog the perimeter. Then, the Spurs can't get their role players involved and must penetrate or throw down to Tim Duncan.Besides Tim Duncan, do the Spurs have a legitimate back to the basket scorer? I guess Drew Gooden can get you solid post offense, but other than that, they mostly have jump shooters. You also have guys who penetrate in like Parker and Ginobili. You need long, quick guys to defend them, but you know they're going to get their points eventually. So, I'd approach it this way: never help off of the shooters, never double in the post (unless you have limited size) and make the Spurs big three score. If you can stop the Roger Mason's, the Bonner's, the Finley's for 3/4 of the game, they won't have much rhythm and c...
Contemplating The New Age Spurs
2009-02-18 15:01:00 The Spurs are starting to end an era of tough defense and half court offense. Gone will be the old school bank shots, and players being totally put out of a game offensively. They will now bring in an era of three point shots and athletically gifted guards. How will the NBA function without a back to basics approach? It's good because..Fans that think the Spurs are boring will change their minds. People want to see George Hill run in for an athletic slam and they want to see the Red Rocket shoot three's from his shoulder. It will move the NBA fully into a new era (the Cavs are kind of still in defense mode, but they can score as well). Defense is becoming out of style and as bad as that is, every team is moving towards a more offensive approach.I like it because I want to see people other than Tim Duncan, Parker and Ginobili provide highlights. We as a basketball republic (the world) can begin to appreciate what the Roger Mason's and the Matt Bonner's do for teams. If people can ...

The 3 reasons why Arsenal failed to beat Spurs
2008-10-30 08:56:00 Sometimes in football you witness games where logic goes out the window and all hell breaks lose. Liverpool’s 5-4 win over Alaves in the UEFA Cup immediately comes to mind as does last year’s ridiculous 4-2 loss to Liverpool in the Champions League. Last night’s 4-4 draw with Tottenham was one of those games. Before I pick ...

2008-10-06 12:55:00 At times it’s glitz and glamour. It’s Bond-like international travel and espionage with none of the dangers of being killed by a power-hungry Communist with plans to destroy the earth. It’s thrills and excitement followed by the euphoria of victory or the depression of defeat. In most people’s eyes it’s a dream job, but with stress-related health problems, thousands of people telling you how to do your job and any gratitude you receive being swiftly swept away at the merest glimpse of a downturn, being a football manager may not be all it’s cracked up to be. With obsessive research a prerequisite for managers these days, it makes Bill Shankly’s denials that he took his wife to a Rochdale match for their wedding anniversary look almost normal of course I didn’t take my wife to see Rochdale as an anniversary present, it was her birthday. Would I have got married in the football season? Anyway, it was Rochdale reserves. If being a manage...

Spurs Should Be Embarrased
2008-07-20 03:44:00 On friday, I brought you a story about Tottenham reporting ManUtd over Berbatov (don't remember? click here) now Sir Alex has had his say and it is definetly worth reading.United had responded to the comments saying that they would fully cooperate with the Premier League, but what did our gaffer say?A National newspaper (The Sun) had quoted Fergie as saying that he expects to sign Berbatov, which Fergie has denied."I don't know where they got those quotes from, it wasn't from me."It's going to be very embarrassing for Spurs because the complaint appears to be on the basis of a story in a paper." If this is the only thing that Spurs are basing their complaint on, then they will look stupid.Something that has been pointed out to me that I forgot is: Tottenham have recently signed a youngster from Crystal Palace for about 3.5 million pounds less than he is worth and many people believe that they have stolen that player from Palace. But I don't hear them saying anything about that....

Spurs vs Lakers Game 5: "Not So Fast My Friend"
2008-05-28 20:00:00 05/29/08 POINTSHAVERS.COM - The San Antonio Spurs may be down; but, they are definitely not out. Not just yet. Tonight, the Spurs will travel to the Los Angeles Staples Center to face the Lakers in a must-win Game 5 of the NBA Western Conference Finals. Two days ago, Game 4 was decided in the closing seconds by a controversial no-call by NBA referee Joey Crawford. Laker (G) Derick Fisher made contact with Spurs (G) Brent Barry during Barry's attempt at a game winnning 3-point shot with only 3 seconds left in the game. If the refs blow the whistle, Brent Barry gets three free throws to win the game for the Spurs and even the series at 2-2. So obviously Coach Poppovich and the San Antonio Spurs will be a little bit testy when the the game tips off tonight at 9:00 PM EST.The Lakers can win the series tonight and get almost a week of rest while they await the winner of the Celtics-Pistons series whcih may go to seven games. Needless to say, a week of rest heading into the NBA Fin...

Lakers Have Spurs on the Ropes
2008-05-28 07:54:00 The Lakers are now in cruise control with the defending champion San Antonio Spurs. Los Angeles kept the Spurs from making the comeback Tuesday night to take a 3-1 series lead. With another win, Kobe will return to the promised land to await either the Pistons or Celtics. On Tuesday night, Kobe lead the way with 28 points and 10 rebounds, while Duncan had 29 and 17 for the Spurs. It was very close down the stretch, but the Lakers took it 93-91. Brent Barry went for the win with seconds remaining, as he took a 3. Some claim Barry was fouled by Derek Fisher, but the refs made no call, creating somewhat of a controversy following the game. The Lakers last were in the Finals back in 2004, when they had the team composed of Hall of Famers like Shaq, Kobe, Karl Malone and Gary Payton, but failed to defeat the Detroit Pistons. We could see a renewal of that series or a renewal of the storied Lakers vs. Celtics rivalries from the 80's. Right about now though, the world champions look ...

Spurs Pain The Lakers!
2008-05-26 05:28:00 The Spurs got back on track and beat the Lakers 103-84 to make it a 2-1 series lead for the Lakers. The Spurs had it going tonight; Manu was back and he made lots of jumpers. I thought that the Spurs would come out with lots of energy, but it took a bit of time for them to get going. I think once they were able to run and get Manu open jumpers, everyone was very confident.I saw a couple of things the Lakers can do to get a road win on Tuesday: make free throws, get the bench rolling and don't run a modified version of the triangle, otherwise known as the Kobe-triangle. Back to the free throws: in the first two games, LA only averaged 2.5 misses from the free throw line. Before the first half was over, LA more than doubled that average (missing six). Manu Ginobili beat the Lakers bench by himself. I don't need to say anything more about the Lakers bench woes. Kobe had to do too much by himself: he was the only one really active in the Lakers comeback attempt. Also, the Lakers have t...

Lakers Have Spurs Down
2008-05-24 07:57:00 Friday night's Lakers-Spurs game was a blowout, no doubt about it. Even with Tony Parker's NBA Wife, Eva Longoria-Parker cheering her team on, the Spurs couldn't make the type of heroic comeback the Lakers did against them. Los Angeles now sits pretty with a 2-0 series lead on the defending champs. But we've been here before right?Keep in mind New Orleans held the 2-0 advantage over the Spurs and also homecourt advantage last round. The Spurs stayed in it, winning all their home games and then doing what they needed to do to take Game 7 in New Orleans. Difference here is the Lakers have the reigning MVP and veteran star power from Kobe, Odom and Gasol. Derek Fisher adds yet another ring wearer as he's been a part of Laker's championships. Even with Bynum MIA due to injury this team's the real deal. It's gonna take a lot more than what San Antonio did to New Orleans for them to overcome the Lakers. The Lakers seem to be sensing they can eliminate this team and just m...
Lakers Trample Spurs!
2008-05-24 05:55:00 In what ended up being a blowout game, the Lakers beat the Spurs 101-71. The Lakers got the rust of their first quarter game and executed terrifically throughout the game. The root of the Spurs problem is the health of Manu Ginobili. He didn't look great in the first half, but he showed some signs in the second. The Spurs need to put all the time and resources they can into making sure Manu is 100% Manu. Kobe had around the clock treatment for his back; I know it's not the same for an ankle, but something similar to that will have a positive effect.Once again I recorded the points in the last two minutes of quarters. The results from this were staggering. The Spurs had no points in the last two minutes in the first, second and third quarters. The fourth quarter didn't matter, that was straight garbage (said the Marv Albert way) time. Overall, the Lakers had a 21 point advantage in this aspect.I like the Spurs to come out strong in game three. They are looking old, but hopefully th...

Large Lakers Comeback Beats Spurs
2008-05-22 05:55:00 The Spurs had made plans to leave town early and catch a flight to LA Monday night, however their plane had been delayed for hours. The plane situation didn't seem to hurt them as they were walloping the Lakers for a while Wednesday night. In Game 1, the Lakers defended their homecourt, but they had to make a big comeback to finally overcome the Spurs in the 4th. Spurs led by as many as 20 in this game, but the determination of Kobe along with his squad were able to pull off an 89-85 win. The Lakers defense was credited for making a great deal of stops to charge back. Kobe was cold early but his performance helped push the team to the victory. He finished with 27 points, while Duncan finished with an impressive 30 points and 18 rebounds. The final minute of the game proved exciting with the Spurs tying things up on a Duncan tip in, then Kobe coming right back at the other end to hit the jumper. Lakers were up 2 with 20 seconds to go. The Spurs tried to take the lead on a 3 ...

Spurs Advance Past Hornets 91-82
2008-05-20 05:50:00 In the words of former Houston Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich, you can never "underestimate the heart of a champion". Perhaps many people did just that, self included, as the Hornets were blowing San Antonio away in New Orleans. Many people expected the champion Spurs to be done as of Monday night.Monday night marked the final Game of the series, with a trip to the Conference finals on the line. Each team had been really dominating the other on the homecourt, but that wasn't the case here. Experienced champions were consistent here and the younger Hornets couldn't overcome their spirit. San Antonio was up by 9 as the teams headed into halftime. They had a hot 3rd quarter, going up by as much as 12. In the 4th, Janero Pargo narrowed the gap to just 3 points after New Orleans played volleyball with about 4 different offensive rebounds. Tony Parker hit a nail in the coffin type shot and the Spurs ended up winning it 91-82. Despite the loss, Chris Paul definitely had the brea...
Spurs finish off the Hornets!
2008-05-20 05:14:00 In a surprisingly close game, the Spurs beat the Hornets 91-82 to win the series 4-3. The Spurs played great throughout almost the entire game. Near the end of the game, the Hornets were fueled by a hot streak from Pargo. The problem was Chris Paul didn't have any heroics in the bag. He is a good offensive player, but doesn't have enough individual game to propel them past the Spurs.Again, I recorded the points in the last two minutes of quarters. The Spurs had a six point advantage of the Hornets. They won the all important third quarter, by only two. They played like an experienced team does in a game seven: poised and the old guys were able to hit jump shots. It's late, so I will probably have more on this game tomorrow.

Spurs Hurt the Hornets
2008-05-16 05:57:00 The Spurs not only hurt New Orleans with a 19 point win Thursday night, but also hurt their All-star forward, David West. West left the game after taking a hit in the back by Robert Horry. Apparently back spasms forced West to the back locker room with the help of his teammate and staff. Hopefully for the sake of New Orleans he's able to play again on Monday in a do-or-die Game 7.The Spurs looked very good in the second half, and due to Chris Paul's foul trouble, they were able to build an impressive lead. Despite Paul's 21 points and 8 assists, San Antonio outscored the Hornets 20-12 in the 3rd quarter. For San Antonio, Duncan notched 20 points, 15 boards and 6 assists, with Ginobli scoring 25 to lead the team. The Hornets didn't really have any other impressive performances, as Peja had just 13, West chipped in 10 and Chandler had 14.The World champs who were once down 2-0 and seemed "out of it", are now easily in position to return to the promised land.
