2008-05-14 03:21:00 Lotus, Spyker to enter into development, parts-sharing partnership Dutch exotic car maker Spyker and English sports-car builder Lotus on Tuesday announced a partnership that includes three specific agreements. As elsewhere in the automotive industry, the move aims to cut down costs by sharing technology and parts. The agreements include a Parts and Platform Commonality Agreement, Parts and Accessories Supply Agreement as well as a concept Design and Engineering Agreement. What this means is that Lotus could dictate how future Spykers will look, feel and drive, and possible share a platform with the new Lotus Esprit, according to AutoCar. Other platforms and lesser parts will also be shared, as will a supply of the parts. Spyker to unveil long-wheelbase C8

The Dutch exotic automaker has fallen on some hard times, but that's not going to stop it from moving forward with at least some of its plans. The C12 Zagato has been postponed indefinitely, but at the upcoming Geneva auto show in March, Spyker is expected to unveil an improved version of its existing C8 Laviolette. As wonderfully quirky as the current C8 is, owners complain of constricted space. In response Spyker has stretched the wheelbase, giving more space in the cabin while improving the vehicles proportions. The C8 Laviolette LWB will feature an elongated version of the current model's glass roofline.

The deal is technically between companies owned by Mallya and Spyker and includes Dutch investor Michiel Mol. Mallya is already deeply involved in Formula One through his Kingfisher beer brand, which sponsors the Toyota Panasonic team in Formula One. He is also part of a group seeking to bring a Formula One race to India. Spyker acquired the Formula one team from Midland only last year for about $107 million, but has since suffered financial reverses. Nonetheless, the current deal makes that an extraordinarily good investment, as Spyker has almost recovered its entire investment with the sale of only a 50% interest in the team.
