Fresh snowfall greets Srinagar
2008-02-04 11:38:00 Srinagar received fresh snowfall on Monday thereby bringing relief to the residents from the extreme chill that was sweeping the Valley for past few days. "We are happy after receiving fresh snowfall. Snowfall reduces the intensity of cold. We also get rid of impurities of water. We pray to God for more snowfall," said Imtiyaz, a resident. Entire Srinagar is under a thick blanket of snow with trees, rooftops, roads and parks covered with excessive snow. Kids enjoyed playing with snowballs. "There should be snowfall In Kashmir because that sets the ecological system right. There is power problem here, as there is no water. With snowfall, it becomes very good," said Shabir Ahmad, a resident. According to reports from Gulmarg, 29 km from Srinagar, six inches to one foot of snowfall has been recorded at the resort. Snowfall blocks Srinagar-Jammu highway
2008-02-04 11:30:00 Traffic on Srinagar-Jammu national highway was suspended on Sunday following landslides at Panthal and heavy snowfall at Patnitop and Jawahar tunnel, officials said. The highway is the only road link between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of the country. Batote, Banihal and Qazigund on the highway recorded 11.8 mm, 9.6 mm and 6.2 mm of snowfall respectively, a Met official said. Meanwhile, the Valley received fresh snowfall on Saturday night following intense cold wave conditions. Kupwara was the coldest place in the State with minimum temperature plummeting to minus 6.8 degrees Celsius. Pahalgam in south Kashmir recorded minimum temperature of minus four degrees Celsius, while in Srinagar the minimum temperature dipped to minus 0.6 degrees Celsius. (ANI)

'Dhumhal,' the traditional dance, star attraction at Srinagar R-D
2008-01-25 12:34:00 'Dumhal', the traditional folk dance of Jammu and Kashmir, was a star attraction at the dress rehearsal of the Republic day at Bakshi stadium here today. 'Dumhal' is a devotional dance form, which is performed on special occasions by men of Kashmir's Wattal tribe to invoke divine blessings. "This dance form is being performed since centuries. 'Dumhal' is performed on special occasions and people enjoy this dance immensely," said Mohammad Shafi, a 'Dumhal' performer. The performers wear long colourful robes and tall conical caps studded with beads and shells. The dance party moves in a procession carrying a banner in a very ceremonial fashion.
