St Lucia Day
2007-12-13 11:59:00
O, Saint Lucia,O, Saint Lucia,Wearing white,Lighting up the darkestLighting up the darkestWinter night,Winter nightToday, the 13th December, marks the Feast Day of St Lucia, a European religious holiday dedicated to the Italian saint, Lucia. Lucia is the patron saint of Sicily (also known as Syracuse), who, supposedly due to nothing more than a spurned lover, suffered a martyrs death in the 400AD.Throughout Italy, Sweden and Denmark, she is marked by either the eldest daughter of the household wearing a white dress (to symbolise the sainthood and purity of Lucia) with a red band (symbolising her death ? she had miraculously survived the traditional martyrs death of burning, the flames refusing to lap near her feet, so her spurned lover stabbed her). A crown of candles completes Lucia?s image, originally enabling her to use both hands to bring ample food to the banished Christians in the dark catacombs of Sicily. These days, the symbolic eldest daughter brings Saffron Buns or Lusseka...

Jazz is in the air!
2007-11-29 21:22:00
Source: www.stluciajazz.org Jazz festivals are always ?happenin? in the Caribbean. From January to December, you can choose to go anywhere from Antigua to Barbados, St Lucia, Jamaica, Bermuda, Aruba, the Cayman Islands, Dominica, Tobago, and other islands, and somewhere on the calendar, you?ll find an event worth attending. While some shows stay true to the artform, showcasing strictly jazz musicians, some also invite non-jazz, R&B or other artistes in order to increase the festivals? appeal, and to satisfy the varied musical palette of patrons. Regardless, Caribbean jazz and music festivals have become popular with international audiences. Visitors from all over come together with residents to enjoy good music, great food, dancing in the sun, and Caribbean hospitality.Additionally, there are Caribbean-jazz festivals, like the October Jazz Festival in St Lucia and the Pan Jazz Festival in Trinidad. These involve Caribbean musicians and music. Here are some of the popular music fe...
The Scoop - St Lucia Food and Rum Festival 2007
2007-11-18 20:50:00
Neysha Soodeen (right) with veteran Caribbean-American broadcaster Claude Tait. Off the heels of the second annual St Lucia Food and Rum Festival, which took place from November 1-4 at Rodney Bay Village, we?re already looking forward to next year?s edition. This year was a blast with the festival getting top scores from foodies and regional and international media who visited the island for a weekend of savouring some of the Caribbean?s finest rum-based beverages and cuisine. Events, hosted by a group of internationally renowned celebrity chefs at a rum pavilion and at some of the island?s finest restaurants, were also well patronised. All of this took place against the backdrop of a village party, which featured a number of local and Caribbean bands, including The Rootz Underground ? a major hit with attendees. ?We are satisfied that celebrity chefs Art Smith, John Conrad St. Marthe, Doran Payne, Eoghain O?Neil, Robert Oliver, along with the local chefs stood with us and helped ma...

2007-09-20 14:41:00
Photography by Karen SylvesterIn our current issue of MACO Caribbean Living, writer Dee Lundy-Charles writes about the exquisite décor of the Ku De Ta restaurant in St. Lucia, which captures the best elements of Thai style, and dishes out authentic flavours of Thailand courtesy Chef Ratchatrep Wacharapong, a Bangkok native, locally known as Chris. Here?s an excerpt from the article. You can read the entire article at macomag.com."Ku garden is possibly St Lucia?s best kept secret dining spot. Tucked alongside the elegant path which leads to Thai restaurant Ku De Ta, the small, perfectly-designed deck is almost completely enclosed in a lush green bower. MACO Memories - Prada, Comedy and Caribbean Chic
2007-09-03 17:34:00
The next issue of MACO Caribbean Living (Volume 9 Issue 2). Available in bookstores from mid-September. Imagine the cast of The Devil Wears Prada crossed with Last Comic Standing. That would aptly describe my entire staff at Toute Bagai Publishing, which consists of an all-female team; so imagine 15 women in an office, not including Nasma in Jamaica and Kathy, our editor, who thinks our office is too noisy for even her, a state prosecutor! A smile on my face never fails to turn into a giggle when an unsuspecting subscriber walks through our doors to renew a subscription and finds Mari-Ange in midst of practising for her role in the latest stage production, or Parris regaling us with details of her life as a newlywed. I sit back and watch as the visitor to our MACO headquarters enters, pauses, and then joins me in a cackle. Our production trips for MACO are no different. And with every editor?s note I write, these memories come flooding back. In April, Kerri Tucker, photographer Cooki...

Culinary tourism in the Caribbean
2007-08-07 23:25:00
Culinary tourism has emerged as the hottest niche for the travel industry, and many countries such as Canada, France, Italy, Scotland, and Spain have been positioning themselves as destination hotspots for travellers who love to spoil their taste buds. They?re on the right track, because according to the International Culinary Tourism Association (ICTA), food and beverages have an equal, if not more powerful, allure as museums, sports and shopping. One of a country?s greatest attractions is its culture, and every culture is known for its delicacies, whether it?s France for its escavêche (cold terrine of sweet water fish in wine and vinegar), Spain for its gazpacho soup, or Jamaica for its jerk. There is a definite connection between tourism and culinaria. Ever met a traveler who has never mentioned the various foods sampled on their last trip?Caribbean cuisine Some Caribbean islands have tapped into the culinary tourism market, and the region can boast of events such as:- ...

2007-06-17 06:04:00
For many St Lucians, what was most remarkable about our 83-year-old prime minister’s first budget address since taking office last December was that he had managed to stay on his feet for the full four hours of its delivery. Indeed, not a few still hold on to the view that the Herculean effort had contributed more to Sir John’s current state of health than had his widely reported contretemps with his Cabinet colleagues over St Lucia’s relationship with China.
