Our St. Patrick's Day
2009-03-19 17:15:00
Nary a year passes here without our family celebrating St. Patrick's Day. My husband's family couldn't be more Irish (on his father's side) and my own has a good helping of Dear Old Eire in there, as well. This year, as in many past, it was all about the food. We started the day off with a Full Irish Breakfast - minus the black and white puddings as I would be the only one to eat those, and the cost wasn't something I was willing to pay just for me. Not one of us could finish the whole thing and there were quite a few leftovers from it. No matter, we put those to good use later.Dinner was Colcannon, Corned beef and Cabbage (with potatoes and carrots) and Irish Soda Bread.Colcannon (with bacon added!), carrots, corned beef and irish soda bread peeking out from it all. Irish Soda BreadAfter that enormous breakfast, but before dinner, those of us at home walked downtown to Donegal Square and Moravian Book Shop - two of my favorite places in Downtown Bethlehem. On the way we noticed...

St. Patrick Behind The Bench?
2008-05-12 16:07:00
Former Avalanche goaltender Patrick Roy is a coach.  The Colorado Avalanche currently have a coaching vacancy to fill with the departure of Joel Quenneville (remember Don Cherry, he wasn't fired).  Therefore, Patrick Roy is automatically a candidate for the job. Forget the fact that Roy has only been coaching hockey for a few years, and only at the junior level (in the offense-only QMJHL).  Forget that hiring him would instantly be labeled a publicity stunt more than an actual move to improve the franchise.  Forget that Francois Giguere would have to justify a growing string of nostalgia hirings, even if they've proven reasonably successful so far.  Forget the fact that any and all mistakes or shortcomings suffered by the team would be magnified ten fold, just by the name behind the bench.  It's a wonder Wayne Gretzky survived this long in Phoenix. Sure enough, because Patrick Roy is a coach somewhere, he's a candidate for the Avalanche job.  ...

St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin
2008-03-24 09:21:00
Saint Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin, formally known as The National Cathedral and Collegiate Church of Saint Patrick, Dublin or in the Irish language as Árd Eaglais Naomh Pádraig, founded in 1191, is the larger of Dublin’s two Church of Ireland cathedrals, and the largest church in Ireland. Unusually it is not today the seat of a bishop, as Dublin’s Church of Ireland Archbishop has his seat in Christ Church Cathedral, with Saint Patrick’s being (since 1870) the National Cathedral for the whole island, drawing chapter members from each of the twelve dioceses of the Church of Ireland. Saint Patrick’s is headed by a Dean, an office which has existed since 1219, the most famous holder being Jonathan Swift. Plan your summer holidays in Ireland. Nice and fun tourist location, one of best travel cities. Tourist GPS spot: 53° 20′ 22″ N, 6° 16′ 17″ W

Irish Jokes for St Patrick's Day
2008-03-18 09:15:00
Into a Belfast pub comes Paddy Murphy, looking like he'd just been run over by a train. His arm is in a sling, his nose is broken, his face is cut and bruised and he's walking with a limp."What happened to you?" asks Sean, the bartender."Jamie O'Conner and me had a fight," says Paddy. "That little shit, O'Conner," says Sean, "He couldn't do that to you, he must have had something in his hand.""That he did," says Paddy, "a shovel is what he had, and a terrible lickin' he gave me with it." "Well," says Sean, "you should have defended yourself. Didn't you have something in your hand?" "That I did," said Paddy. "Mrs. O'Conner's breast, and a thing of beauty it was, but useless in a fight." *******************************-*******************************-********************An Irishman who had a little too much to drink is driving home from the city one night and, of course, his car is weaving violently all over the road. A cop pulls him over."So," says the cop to the driver, wher...

Parade Draws Major Crowd, Minor Incidents
2008-03-18 00:07:00
Officials estimated 130,000 to 150,000 revelers packed the downtown for the festivities and to possibly catch a glimpse of presidential hopeful Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., who marched in the parade. Despite such a high-profile guest, the parade ran smoothly. However, as expected, there were some alcohol-related incidents. State police said two adults were arrested for ...

St. Patrick?s Day: wearing o? the black
2008-03-17 15:47:00
I won’t be wearing green today. Don’t get me wrong - like many Americans, I’ve got plenty of Irish blood in my veins, and I’m quite happy to celebrate that heritage. But this St. Patrick thing… Sadly, very few people have stopped to think about exactly what they’re celebrating, or whom. Patrick is credited with leading the Christianization of Ireland and it’s said he “drove the snakes out” of the place. That, of course, is metaphorical. The serpent was an ancient druidic symbol of wisdom, and the thing that was literally driven out (or killed and buried in the ground of) Ireland was the vibrant, centuries-old culture of the Celts. When a Christian missionary went into a new place it was with one goal - extinguish what he found and replace it with Christianity. We see an illuminating example of how the process might begin in Acts 17:23-34, where Paul stumbles upon an opportunity and seizes it like the last bottle of whiskey in Gal...

Happy St. Patrick?s Day To My Fellow Baha?is
2008-03-17 14:06:00
Today we are all either Irish, or honorary Irish. Little known fact: although everyone refers to him as Saint Patrick, he was never officially canonized by any Pope. In anycase, I wonder how the original Patrick, saint or not, would feel to have his death commemorated by celebrations of Bacchus proportions. One of the most obvious ...

St. Patrick's Story
2008-03-17 12:51:00
I'd like to post this little summary of what I've learned about St. Patrick. There has been a lot of myth and legend, but the real story seems to have gotten lost somewhere. Patrick was born in the 5th century in England. His grandfather was a priest, but he didn't subscribe to those beliefs. At the age of 16, he was captured and sold into slavery in Ireland. He lived there for 6 years.  read more &raqu-o;

A St. Patrick’s Day Salute To The Black-Irish Athlete
2008-03-17 08:02:00
As if the falling housing market, rising gas prices, and overall gloomy outlook for the economy weren’t reason enough to go out and get smashed, it’s St. Patrick’s Day. I would bet that 95% of Americans don’t know who Saint Patrick was or why we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. They don’t care either. A day dedicated to drinking alcohol doesn’t need an explanation. This year, while celebrating the life of St. Patrick and wonderful Irish creations such as the potato and alcohol poisoning, we should be thankful for another Irish product. Black-Irish athletes. Everybody makes a big deal out of black athletes or African-American athletes, but when do you ever hear about the plight of the Blirish athlete? Nobody ever talks about where sports would be without the contributions of Willie O’Ree or Jackie Robinson. We’re trying to change that at YBB and we hope you’ll join us in honoring these men. Willie McCovey Donovan McNabb Shaquill...

Happy St. Patrick?s Day

Mrs. Donovan was walking down O’Connell Street in Dublin when she met up with Father Flaherty. The Father said, “Top o’ the mornin’ to ye! Aren’t ye Mrs. Donovan and didn’t I marry ye and yer hoosband 2 years ago?” She replied, “Aye, that ye did, Father.” The Father asked, “And be there any wee little ones yet?” She replied, “No, not yet, Father.” The Father said, “Well now, I’m going to Rome next week and I’ll light a candle for ye and yer hoosband.” She replied, “Oh, thank ye, Father.” They then parted ways. Some years later they met again. The Father asked, “Well now, Mrs. Donovan, how are ye these days?” She replied, “Oh, very well, Father!” The Father asked, “And tell me, have ye any wee ones yet?” She replied, “Oh yes, Father!
