The tomb of St Peter: new documentary challenges Catholic tradition
2008-03-23 19:13:00 A new documentary, "The Secret of the Twelve Disciples", manages to put a dint in one of the pillars of the Roman Catholic tradition. The documentary features academics who accuse the Church of fabricating its connection with the apostle Peter, in order to create the impression of an unbroken link to Christ. The Roman Catholic version of events, has St Peter ending up in Rome, where he was allegedly crucified and buried. The documentary describes this belief as "a conspiracy of faith". There is no scientific basis whatever for the claim that the apostle made it to Rome, and even less proof that he was crucified and buried there. The Catholic Church expects its adherents to go along with this version of events based upon received knowledge, what some Catholic theologians refer to as the "great weight" of tradition. The phrase ex cathedra, which we use in reference to the pope's infallible prerogative, means "from the chair." So, the chair of St. Peter represents the authority given to him and to his successors by Jesus Christ. It is also a symbol of unity and orthodoxy, since it is in communion with the pope that Christians are united in faith and practice.Finally, supposing that we have the actual chair that St. Peter used, we are no longer talking about some ordinary piece of furniture. We're talking about a relic from a saint, an object that mysteriously mediates his continued presence among us. Rivers and canals in St. Petersburg play the part of roads. Many of the city’s most beautiful palaces, gardens, and cathedrals lie alongside the waterways. You can find boats leaving from the Fontanka and Moika rivers and the Griboedov canal as they cross Nevskii Prospekt, the city’s main boulevard. A boat tour lasts one hour and will cost you about RUB200 (€5.75; $7.75). For more adventurous Cheapos, boat trips further afield are also possible. I have to prepare Rachmaninov's 2nd symphony for the Evgeny Svetlanov Conducting Competition in Luxemburg, and I really have had no time to study the score, so I really need "professional help" to make the most of my time. I had a great lesson on the first movement, and this morning I had another one on the second movement. Tonight I will try a little bit of the third as well, if there is time after the official conservatory students have had their lessons. I should have taken a camera with me, by the way. 2007-04-11 16:43:00 Photo by calley_nelson Dostoevsky called St. Petersburg the “most abstract and fantastic city on earth.” The city’s power to amaze is at its best in the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography, built in 1714 on the granite banks of the River Neva to house Tsar Peter the Great’s bizarre collection of abnormal anatomy. Siamese twins in formaldehyde, the skeleton of “Bourgeois the Giant,” and the Tsar’s collections of teeth—which he himself had pulled—are not for the faint hearted. Yet Peter’s intention for his kunstkamera was to prove to the superstitious of his time that abnormality was the result of natural causes and not the devil’s work. The Museum has a total of one million artefacts from all over the world and is currently running a new exposition of African exhibits. For details, check out the Kunstkamera site.
