Survey From Heaven
2008-06-06 11:18:00 After having been commissioned by God to take a survey of how man was doing on Earth, St. Peter now stood before his boss ready to present his findings. "Tell me, St. Peter, what have you found out?" God asked."I'm very sorry to have to tell you this, but the people are behaving in a sinful manner. There's drugs, alcohol, murders, you name it, a regular Sodom and Gomorrah. But the worst is this new obsession with oral sex. According to my survey, 88% of the population is doing it. Even four out of five dentists recommend it. I'm afraid it has reached epidemic proportions.""Hmmm," God said thoughtfully, "Do you have any recommendations as to what should be done to put an end to this sexual perversion?""I think we should send a message to everyone on Earth who engages in oral sex. The contents of that message should tell them exactly what will happen to them on judgement day if they do not stop this type of activity," replied St. Peter."That is an effective solution," God stated, "...

The tomb of St Peter: new documentary challenges Catholic tradition
2008-03-23 19:13:00 A new documentary, "The Secret of the Twelve Disciples", manages to put a dint in one of the pillars of the Roman Catholic tradition. The documentary features academics who accuse the Church of fabricating its connection with the apostle Peter, in order to create the impression of an unbroken link to Christ. The Roman Catholic version of events, has St Peter ending up in Rome, where he was allegedly crucified and buried. The documentary describes this belief as "a conspiracy of faith". There is no scientific basis whatever for the claim that the apostle made it to Rome, and even less proof that he was crucified and buried there. The Catholic Church expects its adherents to go along with this version of events based upon received knowledge, what some Catholic theologians refer to as the "great weight" of tradition. The Catholic claims become even more suspect when you consider that in 1939, the Vatican stage managed what can only be described an archaeological circus. Pius Xll ord...

For the Feast of the Chair of St. Peter, Apostle
2008-02-22 20:15:00 It may seem odd to celebrate an inanimate object, but there is in fact a very good reason for today's feast day. The phrase ex cathedra, which we use in reference to the pope's infallible prerogative, means "from the chair." So, the chair of St. Peter represents the authority given to him and to his successors by Jesus Christ. It is also a symbol of unity and orthodoxy, since it is in communion with the pope that Christians are united in faith and practice. Finally, supposing that we have the actual chair that St. Peter used, we are no longer talking about some ordinary piece of furniture. We're talking about a relic from a saint, an object that mysteriously mediates his continued presence among us. So, when we celebrate this feast day we are showing our veneration for Peter, the Rock and Vicar of Christ. For more on the Chair of St. Peter and papal authority, see the following links:Liturgical Calendar: Feast of the Chair of St. Peter, ApostleNew Advent: Chair of PeterModern Catho...
Three Contractors At The Pearly Gates
2007-10-20 08:53:00 Three contractors found themselves arriving at the pearly gates at the same time. St Peter greeted them and told them that the pearly gates were broken and in need of repair. He asked them each for estimates so God may choose a contractor to have the gates repaired. The first contractor, Hugh Henderson, examined the gates and announced an estimate of 300 dollars. St Peter asked for an explanation. He was told 100 dollars was for materials, 100 dollars for labor and another 100 dollars for profit. The second contractor, Andrew Hamilton, examined the gates and announced an estimate of 900 dollars. St Peter asked again and was told 300 dollars was for materials, 300 dollars for labor and another 300 dollars for profit. The third contractor, Mark Rogers, took a look at the gates and announced an estimate of 2300 dollars. St Peter was taken back and asked Mark how he came upon such a high price. Mark took St Peter aside and whispered, "One thousand for me, one thousand for you, and we get H...

St. Peter Julian Eymard on Hearing the Mass
2007-06-28 21:12:00 Check out this YouTube video I found, thanks to the YouTube Summer Project. It's on the method of hearing Mass by meditation on the Passion. I realize that St. Eymard has in mind the Latin Mass, but there's no reason why his words can't apply to the Novus Ordo Missae either. I particularly enjoy the meaning given behind the various vestments of the priest.Leave a comment and let me know what you think. St Petersburg: Riding Rivers and Canals
2007-05-14 18:33:00 Photo by knutholterrygh By far the best and most relaxing way to get an overview of St. Petersburg is to take a boat trip along the city’s canals and rivers. Rivers and canals in St. Petersburg play the part of roads. Many of the city’s most beautiful palaces, gardens, and cathedrals lie alongside the waterways. You can find boats leaving from the Fontanka and Moika rivers and the Griboedov canal as they cross Nevskii Prospekt, the city’s main boulevard. A boat tour lasts one hour and will cost you about RUB200 (€5.75; $7.75). For more adventurous Cheapos, boat trips further afield are also possible. One exciting itinerary heads up the River Neva, crosses Lake Ladoga, and sails into the Valaam archipelago (see above.) With its 50 small islands, the archipelago boasts the beautiful forested island of Valaam and its old orthodox monastery. The excursion lasts two nights and leaves from the Passenger River Terminal (nearest metro Proletarskaya). Fares range from RUB2290...

In St Petersburg
2007-05-12 12:53:00 I arrived yesterday to St Petersburg by train, and last night I already took a conducting lesson from my old conducting teacher Leonid Korchmar in the St Petersburg Conservatory. I have to prepare Rachmaninov's 2nd symphony for the Evgeny Svetlanov Conducting Competition in Luxemburg, and I really have had no time to study the score, so I really need "professional help" to make the most of my time. I had a great lesson on the first movement, and this morning I had another one on the second movement. Tonight I will try a little bit of the third as well, if there is time after the official conservatory students have had their lessons. I should have taken a camera with me, by the way. On the way back to my place (thanks Serjozha for accommodating me for this week!!!) i saw a huge poster of my concert in the metro. There was a big picture of my soloist, Kari Kriikku, and his name on dog-size letters and after that a text "the most famous clarinetist of Finland". My ...

Mac evangelist Peterson retiring. Macsters vow to continue struggle
2007-05-03 05:49:00 Mac evangelist Phil Peterson retired today after writing over one million bulletin board posts. Peterson achieved fame by promoting Macs to Windows users experiencing difficulties with the Microsoft operating system. He favored tactic was to scour bulletin boards and newsgroups for Windows technical support questions and suggest that their answer lay with changing computing platforms. Amongst his most famous posts are: "You wouldn't have that problem if you used a Mac." "I wouldn't know. I use a Mac." "I have every program I need." "You may want to consider a Mac." "Windows can't do color like the Mac." and, his most famous, "They ripped that off the Mac." Peterson's career went through some rough times in the early nineties with the Pippin disaster and the demise of eWorld. It was during this time that Peterson's posts became more abrasive and hostile, in contrast to the breezy dismissiveness of his earlier work. Statements from this period ranged from the rabid "I hope...

St Petersburg: The Kunstkamera of Peter the Great
2007-04-11 16:43:00 Photo by calley_nelson Dostoevsky called St. Petersburg the “most abstract and fantastic city on earth.” The city’s power to amaze is at its best in the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography, built in 1714 on the granite banks of the River Neva to house Tsar Peter the Great’s bizarre collection of abnormal anatomy. Siamese twins in formaldehyde, the skeleton of “Bourgeois the Giant,” and the Tsar’s collections of teeth—which he himself had pulled—are not for the faint hearted. Yet Peter’s intention for his kunstkamera was to prove to the superstitious of his time that abnormality was the result of natural causes and not the devil’s work. The Museum has a total of one million artefacts from all over the world and is currently running a new exposition of African exhibits. For details, check out the Kunstkamera site. Admission is RUB200 (€5.75; $7.70), with students going half price.

St Petersburg: Hostel Alert
2007-04-09 17:44:00 Photo by Andreas Helke Meet the youth hostel claimed by many of its former guests as the best in the world: the International Hostel of St Petersburg. Hostels are themselves a new concept in Russia. To date, the country has boasted extremely cheap hotels—which function more or less as dormitories—and expensive five-star hotels. Even without the limited local selection, the hostel itself is fantastic. Its city center location is within spitting district of Nevskii Prospect, the city’s beautiful arterial boulevard. It has a variety of clean, comfortable rooms and friendly, helpful staff. It also offers day trips to an authentic dacha in the woods outside the city, and provides opportunities to take a banya (Russian steam bath) and learn how to make borsht. In January and February the hostel offers winter specials, with double rooms including breakfast going for just $44 a night. Stay five nights and you get an extra night free. Summer prices are only slightly higher, at $50...
