Wings and Penguins Face Off ? Again ? in the Stanley Cup Finals
2009-05-28 22:48:00 It?s déjà-vu for the Detroit Red Wings and the Pittsburgh Penguins. The teams faced each other last year in the Stanley Cup finals, and this year, they are doing it again. The series promises to be different from last year?s, though; the Penguins don?t look as if they?re going to accept any more schooling from ...
Stanley Cup Finals Game 3
2008-05-28 17:28:00 This is just a friendly reminder to take your SCF chit chat over to Pensburgh , where the Penguins die-hards like FrankD and JDunman will be desperately seeking as much moral support as they can get. Who better to prop up their sagging spirits when facing the Red Wings than Avalanche fans? Head over to Pensburgh and chime in once he gets the thread posted. Unless of course you're rooting against the Penguins and for the Red Wings. In that case, you should just find a dark cellar and lock yourself in it. Forever.

Pens Beat Flyers, Advance to Stanley Cup Finals
2008-05-20 16:13:00 For the first time in 16 years, the Pittsburgh Penguins have reached the Stanley Cup Final. For Ryan Malone, it?s been a long time coming. The Pittsburgh native scored twice, Marian Hossa had a goal and three assists and Marc-Andre Fleury stopped all 21 shots he faced as the Pens advanced to the final round for the ...
2008 NHL Stanley Cup Finals Preview and Prediction
2008-05-20 08:01:00 The Stanley Cup Finals are set as the Detroit Red Wings get set to open the Finals at home against the Eastern Conference champion Pittsburgh Penguins. This looks to be one of the most entertaining Finals in recent memory as two of the most talented teams in the NHL go head to head for hockey's ultimate prize.Detroit vs. PittsburghBreakdown: This should be one heck of a series to watch. Both teams can really skate. Both teams can shut you down on defense. Both teams have goalies who are on top of their game right now. At the end of the day I give the slight edge to the Pens. I think they are a little bit deeper, a little bit more talented, a little bit younger, a little bit hungrier, a little bit better on defense, and a little bit better in goal. All in all that adds up to a Stanley Cup for Pittsburgh in my book. The Penguins are clicking on all cylinders and have been more impressive against better competition this post-season than Detroit. The Pens are battle tested and ready to...

NHL and NBA Ratings [J. Mark English]
2007-06-06 05:03:00 Oh where, oh where are the NHL fans? Will a real NHL fan please stand up? Please stand up and grab a remote and turn on your TV before the NHL is never on national TV again? The ratings are in from game 3 of the NHL Stanley Cup Finals that was on NBC:Ottawa's 5-3 victory over Anaheim in Game 3 Saturday night received a 1.1 national rating and a 2 share, the network said Tuesday. That matched a rerun of "The West Wing" on July 23, 2005, which also drew a 1.1 rating. Saturday's rating was down 31 percent from last year's Game 3 between Edmonton and Carolina, which had a 1.6/3. The national ratings for Monday night's Game 4 declined less sharply from last year. The Ducks' 3-2 victory received a 1.9/3, down 5 percent from the 2.0/3 for Game 4 in 2006.This translates into "women and children" first as far as the state of the ship of the NHL is concerned. I can't imagine that NBC will stick with the NHL much longer if the ratings continue. Spelling bees on ESPN probably get...

More people watched the XFL than this year's Stanley Cup Finals
2007-06-06 01:31:00 Saturday night's Game 3 between Ottawa and Anaheim received the lowest ever rating for a major network in prime time. Not just the lowest for a sporting event, but the lowest for anything ever shown on one of the networks between 8pm-11pm (7-10 for you Central time farmers). To put this into context, NBC's 1.1 rating for the game was lower than the worst XFL showing, a 1.5, which means that even at its least popular, there were still about half a million more people watching the XFL than watching hockey.

Why is no one covering the Stanley Cup finals? Blame the NHL
2007-06-03 11:59:00 Most of the major newspapers in the U.S. aren't covering the Stanley Cup finals between the Anaheim Ducks and Ottawa Senators. Why, you ask? Well, the NHL hasn't exactly been near the pulse of the American sporting landscape for the past couple years, and that can easily be attributed to the way

Senators Fight Back to Win Game 3 (Anaheim leads 2-1) [Michael Vinciguerra]
2007-06-03 05:34:00 The Senators, who previously struggled and lost Games 1 and 2 against, Anaheim, finally displayed signs of life in their 5-3 victory over Anaheim on Saturday. As a result of crucial physical and offensive performances from their depth players, the Senators were able to prevent Anaheim from blowing the game open each of the three times Anaheim took a one-goal lead. Fourth liner, Dean McAmmond, is credited with the winning goal on a shot that went in off of Anaheim's defenseman, Chris Pronger. During games 1 and 2, Anaheim used their physical advantage to maintain possession of the puck and create scoring opportunities. However, in game 3, Ottawa was not thrown off their game, as they out shot and out hit Anaheim for the first time in this series. In addition, Anaheim was penalized 8 more minutes in the box than the Senators. This is exactly the kind of turn-around performance the Senators needed in a must-win to gain hope in a series which looked predominantly one-sided....

NHL Stanley Cup Finals - Previews and Predictions
2007-05-28 00:52:00 Okay, so life and work have combined to make it impossible for me to post for over a week here. My sincere apologies. I will try to get back on track for the remainder of the playoffs.Stanley Cup Playoff Prediction:The Ottawa Senators top line of Daniel Alfredsson, Dany Heatley and Jason Spezza has managed to find an answer to everything opposing defenses have thrown at them and have scored almost half of Ottawa's points this post season. On the other hand, the Senators have not faced a defense as strong as the one that Anaheim will throw at them. The trio of Chris Pronger, Scott Niedermayer and Francois Beauchemin have been absolutely stifling against their opponents in the first three rounds. The defensive depth of the Ducks will prove tough to overcome for the Senators. Couple that with a surging Teemu Selanne and I have to give this one to Anaheim in 6 games.Tonights Game:Ottawa Senators at Anaheim Ducks : This should be a tough, physical game. Expect Anaheim to try to physicall...

Ducks Headed to the Stanley Cup Finals!
2007-05-23 19:35:00 It’s been a close series for the Aneaheim Ducks and the Detroit Red Wings in the Western Conference Finals. How the Edmonton Oilers went from the Stanley Cup finals to a sad, sad seas
2007-04-12 21:54:00 Chris Pronger (left) and Ryan Smyth (right) stand next to Oilers GM Kevin Lowe (centre). The pair proved to be invaluable to the Oilers, and after their departures, the once respectable franchise became a sad mockery. The Edmonton Oilers were a bad team in 2006-2007.Face it, it's not pretty, but it's the truth. This team went from making the playoffs on the last day of the season and coming oh-so-close to winning the Stanley Cup to a sad bunch who seem like they've lost all interest in playing hockey.Let us evaluate what the players brought to the table.Petr Sykora, signed to a 1-year deal late in the free agency period, has proved to be this team's top scorer after a previously miserable season with the Ducks and Rangers. He finished with 53 points, and had the inversed stats of the departed Ryan Smyth, who equally had 53 points but he put that up in 53 contests while battling injuries and then eventually being dealt to the New York Islanders on Trade Deadline Day.Sykora had 22 go...
