Wrong Team Wins Stanley Cup
2008-06-05 14:03:00 There has to be some kind of mistake here. Gary Bettman, commissioner of the NHL, rigged the entire hockey season just so the Pittsburgh Penguins---his favorite team---would win the Stanley Cup. Unfortunately, they lost in game 6 and some other team got to take home the trophy. How on Earth are we supposed to have a conspiracy if the wrong team wins? I'm not going to talk much more about this. Detroit winning the Cup is the finishing touch on a season I'm glad is over. The quicker we can all put 2007-08 behind us, the better. My advice to you: stay clear of Red Wings blogs and/or fans for a while. They're going to be pretty intolerable for some time. Pens in 9.

2008-06-05 06:18:00 Yesterday, game six of the Stanley Cup final was played at the Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh. After defeating the Detroit Red Wings in game five and avoiding elimination, the Pittsburgh Penguins were back on home ice hoping to extend the series to a seventh game. The Red Wings played much better in this game compared to game five. Early into the contest during a man-advantage, Brian Rafalski opened the score with a wrist shot that got past Marc-André Fleury.Valteri Fillipula doubled the Wings lead into the second period on a rebound given by the Penguins goaltender. But the Penguins refused to give up and Evgeni Malkin finally scored his first goal in this final to cut the Wings lead to a single goal.Into the third period, the Wings regained their two goals lead when a shot from Henrik Zetterberg got thru Marc-André Fleury. After a few seconds of indecision, Fleury pushed the puck inside his own goal while he was looking to cover the loose puck. This goal prooved to be a killer for the ...

Stanley Cup final: Detroit, one hand on the trophy.

Stanley Cup final: Penguins still perfect at Mellon Arena.
2008-05-29 18:27:00 Yesterday, game three of the Stanley Cup final was played at the Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh. The Pittsburgh Penguins were in a must win situation as they were trailing the Detroit Red Wings 0-2 in the series. stanley cup in detroit
2008-05-29 17:57:00 Yeah, I'm at work. I don't want to be here, but I am. Let's hope this day goes by quickly, eh? Anyone else feel like the Red Wings totally threw the game last night? That was one intense game and I'm highly disappointed with the ending score, but hey.. it's only one game. I think they purposely lost so that the Stanley Cup will be won here in Detroit. Then all the local restaurants can profit from our victory as well. It's all about the money.
Stanley Cup Finals Game 3
2008-05-28 17:28:00 This is just a friendly reminder to take your SCF chit chat over to Pensburgh , where the Penguins die-hards like FrankD and JDunman will be desperately seeking as much moral support as they can get. Who better to prop up their sagging spirits when facing the Red Wings than Avalanche fans? Head over to Pensburgh and chime in once he gets the thread posted. Unless of course you're rooting against the Penguins and for the Red Wings. In that case, you should just find a dark cellar and lock yourself in it. Forever.

Stanley Cup final: Red Wings blanks the Penguins again.
2008-05-27 14:05:00 Yesterday, game two of the Stanley Cup final was presented at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. The Detroit Red Wings, after defeating the Pittsburgh Penguins with ease by the score of 4-0 during game one of the series, played an even better game as they only left bits to their opponents.During the first period, defense-men Brad Stuart scored his first goal of the playoffs as he opened the score for the Wings with a shot on Marc-André Fleury's stick side. Only a few minutes later, after a turnover committed by the Penguins defense, Henrik Zetterberg's shot was partially blocked by the Penguins' goaltender. Tomas Holmstrom pushed the loose puck over the goal line to double the Wings lead.Valteri Fillipula completed the score during the third period with a spectacular individual play. As Fillipula was hooked down by defense-men Christopher Letang, the Finn managed to beat Fleury and extinguish any hope for a comeback.Final score: Detroit Red Wings 3 - Pittsburgh Penguins 0 (Detroit leads ...

The Pittsburgh Penguins were the visitors while the Detroit Red Wings benefited of the home ice advantage.Game one prooved that the ''old'' Red Wings were able to contain the young Penguins. The collective play of the Wings was superior during this game as they allowed only a few scoring chances to the Penguins. After a disallowed goal during the first period, the Red Wings opened the score during the second period. Mikael Samuelsson scored his third goal of the playoffs when he went around the net and banked the puck off Marc-André Fleury's left skate. 2008 Stanley Cup final: Pittsburgh Penguins vs Detroit Red Wings.
2008-05-22 02:26:00 The quest for the Stanley Cup began with 16 teams and three elimination rounds later, the field has been reduced to the last two.To the opinion of the majority of hockey observers and backed by their impressive playoff records, the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Detroit Red Wings represent the two big forces both in the Eastern and the Western conference. The Penguins tied a NHL playoff record by winning their three first matches of every series along the way. The Senators, swept in four games, while the Rangers and the Flyers both managed to win a single game in their home building after falling 0-3 to the Penguins. A 12-2 record for three rounds is not common. The offense never slowed down. Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marian Hossa are producing on a great pace while players like Jordan Staal, Pascal Dupuis and Maxime Talbot can score big goals at critical times. Defense men Sergei Gonchar supports the offense and has valuable experience at the defense position. Another defense men wo...

2008 NHL Stanley Cup Finals Preview and Prediction
2008-05-20 08:01:00 The Stanley Cup Finals are set as the Detroit Red Wings get set to open the Finals at home against the Eastern Conference champion Pittsburgh Penguins. This looks to be one of the most entertaining Finals in recent memory as two of the most talented teams in the NHL go head to head for hockey's ultimate prize.Detroit vs. PittsburghBreakdown: This should be one heck of a series to watch. Both teams can really skate. Both teams can shut you down on defense. Both teams have goalies who are on top of their game right now. At the end of the day I give the slight edge to the Pens. I think they are a little bit deeper, a little bit more talented, a little bit younger, a little bit hungrier, a little bit better on defense, and a little bit better in goal. All in all that adds up to a Stanley Cup for Pittsburgh in my book. The Penguins are clicking on all cylinders and have been more impressive against better competition this post-season than Detroit. The Pens are battle tested and ready to...

Stanley Cup playoffs no time for whine party
2008-04-28 18:48:00 Complain about twirling the octopus, whine about the calls, fret over bad ice, scream about anything and everything. Go ahead, knock yourself out! What to do about whining via parentcenter.com...Define it. Before you pin on your No Whining button and draw a line in the sand, make sure your child (hockey fan) knows what you're talking about. Adults often assume that children (hockey fans) know what whining is and realize how awful it sounds - but that's not necessarily the case. Explain that whining sounds yucky and makes people stop listening. Practice "good" and "not so good" voices together - hearing you at your whiniest will probably elicit a good laugh from your child (hockey fan).Getting the picture hockey fans? The whining has to stop. Every hockey fan could be doing it but isn't. Every hockey writer could be doing it, but most don't. It isn't healthy for you and it isn't healthy for the game! It makes you look bad and when the bounces start going you...

Change the name and number on the back and you'd swear the clock was turned back to a vintage Dominik Hasek.Sidney Crosby gets into the action, of course, scoring a beauty while lying on the ice. And there are the obligatory hits, always present in a tight, hard-fought playoff series. They say don't dwell on the past, but this is an exception. Stanley Cup playoffs begin with intriguing storylines
2008-04-07 15:02:00 And now The Chase begins.Over the past six months, and 2,460 games to get to this point, what, exactly, have we learned? In the grand scheme of things, not a whole heck of a lot except that Ovechkin kid is pretty good, the Leafs still suck and the Atlanta Thrashers have the ugliest uniforms in the NHL.Outside of that, not all that much is fact.Over 150,000 minutes of regular season hockey to separate the best 16 in the league and let 14 others know, yes, that they just wasted six months of their lives. No one knows what is going to happen over the course of the next nine weeks or so, but two things are certain. There will be at least another 60 games, and perhaps as many as 105, played before Gary Bettman hands the hallowed Stanley Cup to one of 16 captains sometime in June.Right now, it is nothing more than a guessing game. The top seed in each conference - Montreal and Detroit - have combined to win 34 Stanley Cups. The other 14 playoff-bound teams have a total of 21 between them, o...

Stanley Cup favorites getting set for real season
2008-04-03 17:36:00 The dress rehearsal is over and for those 14 that didn't pass the playoff audition, it is exit stage left. For 16 others, the real season is set to begin. Pick your cliché, because you'll be hearing them in your dreams starting next week. With your fantasy playoff draft looming, your job becomes a little more intimidating than in the regular season. This time of year, not only do you need to draft players who can pile up the points, but now you have to forecast which teams are going to be playing longer than a week or two. A grinding fourth-liner on a conference finalist may be a better pick than a superstar center on a team gone golfing after the opening round. With that in mind, here, in order, are the teams we think have the inside track on making it all the way to the Stanley Cup finals a couple of months from now:6. NEW JERSEY DEVILSSay what? My original prediction as the outfit to face the Sharks in the Cup final falling down to the #6 slot? What gives? Well, it's still...

Stanley Cup playoffs will need consistent officiating
2008-03-31 18:05:00 By Paul KuklaKeep the arm down, refs, you are doing the right thing! I am talking about those ever so slight sticks to the thigh, the little pull to the elbow, even the little hold-up as a player dumps the puck into the offensive zone. We have no problem with those types of non-calls, but please remain consistent, through the end of the regular season and the playoffs. That is all we ask for. Put the arm up, refs, what are you waiting for? Those scrums around the net, after the whistle, are beginning to irritate me more and more. When has it become ok to allow a face-wash, a crosscheck to the back, a jab of the stick to the ankles? It is time, before the playoffs begin, to stop this type of action around the net. Start making the calls, pick a player out and send him off to the penalty box. They will get the message quick enough and they will think twice before doing it again. One more thing: remain consistent with these calls, too!The types of scrums we are seeing more and more nee...

European hockey fans have serious interest in Stanley Cup playoffs
2008-03-31 01:05:00 By Risto PakarinenIt's the time of the year when everybody in Europe - even the casual NHL fan - starts to pay attention to the playoff race in the NHL. Every game is important for their favorite team. But in this case, every loss is met with a cheer, and every lost point counted as a win, if it means that a NHL star will be available for his national team in the upcoming World Championships. The Worlds has been the season's end in Europe for decades. It used to be that the World Championships were played in April, and the (we) Euros were completely oblivious about the Stanley Cup playoffs. (Or, Playoffs, as the NHL style guide seems to suggest). The Worlds was a nice tournament, a showcase of hockey, to end the season and then forget about it for a few months - and focus on soccer instead. These days, the International Ice Hockey Federation is doing its best to make its crown jewel worthy of the name it bears and one way has been to push it forward as far as possible. All partici...

Pammie’s father tried to nick Stanley Cup!
2008-01-10 11:38:00 Actress Pamela Anderson revealed that once she had to lock her father in the tour bus after he tried to steal the Stanley Cup. In an interview with talk show host Jay Leno, the 40-year-old actress said that her father is a die-hard fan of ice hockey and once tried to nick the trophy so he could take it back to Canada. "My dad tried to steal the cup when the Red Wings won in Detroit once. He was scaling the fence trying to bring the Stanley Cup back to Canada where it belongs,” Contactmusic quoted her telling "He was drinking Canadian beer at the time. He had to be locked on the tour bus," she added. Meanwhile, former ‘Baywatch’ star seems to be pushing off with her divorce decision, for the actress’ attorney filed a proof of summons document on Dec 28, 2007, in Los Angeles Superior Court and Solomon has 30 days to file a response to her divorce claim. Temujin and I spent countless hours playing Dynasty Mode as the Canucks (we played on the same team) and finished off the the Flames in 7 in the semi finals and the Devils in 6 in the Finals. Ironically, it was Canuck Brian Gionta, who we had acquired earlier in the season, who stole the show in the playoffs, scoring about 14 goals and winning the Conn Smythe trophy. Tears filled our eyes as the Commish handed Markus Naslund the Cup at center ice, and as Trevor Linden hoisted the prize, only to retire after the celebrations. We had to build the team on speed to even succeed. Players like Ohlund and especially Salo were still much too slow and are going to be traded.Line 1Naslund - Morrison - GiontaLine 2Smolinski - Schaefer - Rob NiedermayerLine 3Dank Sedin - Hank Sedin - PomminvilleLine 4Bulis - Cooke - Linden/KeslerDefensive Pairings:Salo - OhlundBeauchemin - MitchellFitzpatrick - BieksaGoaltendingLuongo - Markanen.Go figure, Niedermayer and especially Beau... |
