Does Your Company Have a Winning Culture?

I’ve been reading Bill and Dave (subtitled: How Hewlett and Packard built the World’s Greatest Company) by Michael Malone. He’s a great writer, and it’s an important business story; I heartily recommend it. Being an ex-HPer, I have tremendous respect, bordering on reverence for the “HP Way”, which was the basis for the culture at Hewlett ...

Seattle Startup Overcomes Trademark Challenge by Changing Its Name
2011-12-05 04:39:00
I came across this story on a Seattle startup. Bluebox Now is a Web-based marketing company. It had begun to build some momentum. It had a big customer and good prospects for outside funding. Then it was hit with what one of its founders described as a “doozy” of a legal problem — it got a cease-and-desist letter from an app host called the “Blue Box Group,” also based in Seattle. Bluebox Now says it’s changing its name. The founder said they thought they could win the trademark dispute, but they couldn?t afford to find out.

Speed Up Startup With Startup Delayer
2011-09-27 09:00:00
Have you ever troubleshot a computer that took forever to start up after a user logged in? Nine times out of ten they probably had a heap load of stuff that started at login time. Stuff like instant messengers, software updaters, backup software, anti-virus, etc. You get the picture. Sure you can disable a lot of that from starting up at all when a user logs in, but what if they really need a programs to run at startup, they just need to be able to login and get to work faster? I found a nice little free tool that will let you delay essential programs instead of stopping them. Thus allowing a faster login time, and still be allowed to have processes that run at login. It?s called Startup Delayer from R2 Studios. You can set your own delay sensitivity when you first run the program. Make it so that nothing will start until the computer is idol, or even start fast and only take slight consideration to CPU and Disk usage. From their page: Startup Delayer gives you the power to...

Some would say that’s what sales people should be doing. Others believe that if sales reps have to cold call, it’s an indication of poor marketing and very ...

The fourth panel at WATSummit was one that was bound to attract a lot of attention and interest – Startup V/S VC Perspective. And it didn’t disappoint. Moderated by Alok Kejriwal – CoFounder and CEO. Games2win, the panel included Sasha Mirchandani – Managing Director, Blue Run Ventures India, Rahul Khanna – Director , Clearstone Venture Advisors, Sateesh Andra – Venture Partner, DFJ India and Sameer Guglani – CoFounder, The Morpheus. Alok started the session with a quip about how the entrepreneur was standing while all the investors were sitting. He then began off by asking the panel if it was necessary for an entrepreneur to behave in a certain manner to get funded. While Sasha Mirchandani said it depended on whom he was pitching to. Sameer Guglani gave his own example of raising money in semi-formals. But he stressed it was important to project yourself as you were. Amidst all the light hearted digs that Alok took at the panelists he did ...

How Soon Should Your Software or Hardware Company Go International?
2010-10-12 19:08:00
This is a question that frankly doesn’t come up often enough at early stage tech companies. Ekoing Loud And Clear – A Startup Review
2010-09-04 10:30:00
A few of the top words doing the rounds in the Indian economic scene this past year are microfinance, mobile revolution, financial inclusion, social responsibility, sustainable solutions, etc. There is one startup that will emerge from a mash up of these words – Eko India Financial Services Private Limited. Based on the idea of providing accessible banking services to the financially excluded and unbanked section of the society, Eko has left a very impressive mark on me. Eko provides a low-cost banking platform – SimpliBank – which ensures real-time cash transactions over a mobile phone. Considering the fact that their target group is the middle and low income population in India where cash transactions on a mobile phone will bring up substantial trust issues, they have come up with a brilliant solution. Eko appoints local retail outlets (kiranawalas or chemists) as its Customer Service Points (CSPs). They have cleverly leveraged existing distribution networks and their intera...
