WHERE 2.0 LAUNCHPAD: THE BEST OF A DOZEN GEO STARTUPS
2008-05-13 04:53:00
Twelve companies pitched to the crowd at the Where 2.0 conference Monday night. Each had only five minutes each to make their case. A full rundown of the companies is on the official Launchpad page, but here's the Webware takeaway on the most interesting of the dozen apps (not counting Whrrl, which we covered last week): Orbster makes location-based games for mobile phones. The company was showing off GPS Mission. The cool thing is a Web-based mission designer lets individuals or communities create games based on their own knowledge of their locales. Game players have to collect virtual "gold" by going to the locations in the game and, I think, answering questions based on them. It's like geo-caching, but without that bothersome digging up of plastic bins. GPS-capable phone required. Rhiza Labs is launching Community Insights, which is a Web-based platform for mapping data sets. It lets users compare data sets on a map, annotate existing maps, and also lets the users who uplo...

desiwiki:The wiki for Indian Startups
2008-05-09 13:02:00
Do you know what are the biggest pain points faced by entrepreneurs while starting their new venture? It is the lack of knowledge in legal, financial and company incorporation areas, especially if you are an online startup. I am saying this from my personal example. The amount of frustration that I have been through over last couple of months cannot be described in words. Just getting the company incorporated was a big project in itself. And if by any chance the startup is getting invested from outside, the formalities and paperwork involved turns into a nightmare (I can vouch for it). However, like I mentioned, problems are more due to lack of knowledge than anything else. Yes, there are plenty of resources online, but they are scattered all across the web. If you are a US/ UK based startup, you will find plenty of resources online that will really help you out in understanding the whole process in a streamlined fashion. In India though, the ball game is all together different....

The Future of Web Startups
2008-05-02 01:20:00
1. Lots of StartupsSo my first prediction about the future of web startups is pretty straightforward: there will be a lot of them. When starting a startup was expensive, you had to get the permission of investors to do it. Now the only threshold is courage.Even that threshold is getting lower, as people watch others take the plunge and survive. In the last batch of startups we funded, we had several founders who said they'd thought of applying before, but weren't sure and got jobs instead. It was only after hearing reports of friends who'd done it that they decided to try it themselves.Starting a startup is hard, but having a 9 to 5 job is hard too, and in some ways a worse kind of hard. In a startup you have lots of worries, but you don't have that feeling that your life is flying by like you do in a big company. Plus in a startup you could make much more money. As word spreads that startups work, the number may grow to a point that would now seem surprising. We now think of it a...

Strategic planning for real estate startups
2008-04-16 01:38:00
Nikolai Kolding at the new BH&G Real Estate blog inspired me to write more about the strategic planning process. Like Nicolai, I've always been hooked on how businesses work and why things happen, the essence of corporate strategy. Simply put, there are two types of strategic planning - corporate planning and startup planning. Nicolai describes the former by introducing the "scenario planning" methodology used by conglomerate Royal Dutch Shell: Shell uses scenarios to explore the future. Our scenarios are not mechanical forecasts.  They recognise that people hold beliefs and make choices that can lead down different paths.  They reveal different possible futures that are plausible and challenging. Our latest energy scenarios look at the world in the next half century, linking the uncertainties we hold about the future to the decisions we must make today. The next half century is long term planning (frankly, I think it is too long). This is the province of management...

Website Flipping
2008-04-09 18:54:00
While website acquisitions by big boys such as Google and News Corp. gets the most attention, there are thousands of small-scale websites that are being traded or “flipped” over from one person to another everyday. Basically, website flipping involves spotting an already existing website and improving almost everything about it including the content, the Page Rank, and its SEO and then selling it to another buyer at a profit. Website flipping uses the same principle as “real estate” flipping except that it has the potential for exponential profit margin. This is because the website you acquired for $1,000 can be worth $25,000 in a few months assuming that you have dramatically improved its perceived market value. All kinds of websites can be candidates of flipping including blogs, entertainment sites, dating sites, and even mini sites. These kinds of sites needs varying levels of expertise to run so you need to be sure that you can run the site you acquired. ...

Stars and Startups
2008-03-24 06:06:00
Undoubtedly, celebrities and movie stars enjoy a special stature all over the world but when it comes to India they are treated like demigods and may be in some cases equal to Gods. It is common for stars and celebrities to capitalize on this kind of popularity by way of endorsing brands etc. But again, when it comes to India the enormous popularity of some super stars has also led to prominent political careers. For example, in Tamil Nadu, where the Tamil film superstars Sivaji Ganesan, M. G. Ramachandran, J. Jayalalitha etc., who have ruled Tamil Nadu as the Chief Minister while the Telugu cinema superstar N. T. Rama Rao enjoyed a similar political career in Andhra Pradesh. Hindi (Bollywood) film stars, Vinod Khanna, Shatrughan Sinha, Dharmendra, Govinda etc., including the legendary Amitabh Bachchan, have also dabbled in politics but with short term success than that of their South Indian counterparts. Now, the latest fad or the current trend is for stars to venture into start...

How to Choose a Good Domain Name
2008-03-21 17:59:00
If you are reading this article, chances are, you already have an existing site. But as every webmaster knows, a single site never seems to be enough because there is always the urge to develop another. It is true that focusing on one site instead of a hundred different site is easier; it also has the potential to give you as much revenue as the hundred sites if you do it correctly. Despite this knowledge, building a new website or blog seems to be irresistible for many. So if regret the domain name you choose before, try to make the right choice now. Here are a few tips to guide you: 1. Choose a short name ? most popular domain names are relatively short for good reasons. It can be established as a better brand, it is difficult to misspell, and it can fit into logos easily. There are some companies who decide to name the whole company name their domain name; this can be unwise because it will look awkward and it would not fit into Google PPC ads. 2. Choose a memorable name ? people...

STARTUPS NEED WORKAHOLICS OR PASSIONATE EMPLOYEES
2008-03-09 18:29:00
A huge debate was sparked off by Mahalo founder Jason Calacanis when he perhaps unwittingly said words that he has now retracted:Fire people who are not workaholics... come on folks, this is startup life, it's not a game. don't work at a startup if you're not into it--go work at the post office or stabucks if you're not into it you want balance in your life. After irate bloggers raised their voice against this philosophy (Duncan Riley of TC) Jason "clarified" that he actually meant hiring "people who love their jobs". I find it a bit discomforting -- because the statement was followed up with the "you're not into it you want balance in your life" bit. I am currently at a startup and I am passionate about what I do, but I am equally passionate about having quality time with my family. No discussion on that.Though Calacanis has been defended by Mike Arrington of TechCrunch the danger is that I have late...

Working On The Business To Create More Growth And Profits
2008-02-26 19:36:00
It?s been discussed a lot lately, and for a good reason: it works. The moment you start working ON the business instead of IN it, you can focus on growth of sales, cutting costs and achieving your goals. When dealing with minutia and doing all the work that your ?employees? should be doing, you?re not getting ahead very fast. However, the moment you decide to spend more time working ON the business it rapidly grows. The tasks you can perform are strategy creation and improvement, setting up new marketing venues, setting up referral systems and creating To Do lists after carefully reviewing the past quarter. The big difference here lays in the fact that once you work on the business, you take a different standpoint. You look over the whole business as being in a helicopter, and can easily pinpoint problem areas without losing time in the details. That?s where you get stuck working in the business, the smallest problems that come from details. A business owner is more of an investor. ...

Ten Rules for Web Startups
2008-02-25 11:50:00
Source: evhead#1: Be NarrowFocus on the smallest possible problem you could solve that would potentially be useful. Most companies start out trying to do too many things, which makes life difficult and turns you into a me-too. Focusing on a small niche has so many advantages: With much less work, you can be the best at what you do. Small things, like a microscopic world, almost always turn out to be bigger than you think when you zoom in. You can much more easily position and market yourself when more focused. And when it comes to partnering, or being acquired, there's less chance for conflict. This is all so logical and, yet, there's a resistance to focusing. I think it comes from a fear of being trivial. Just remember: If you get to be #1 in your category, but your category is too small, then you can broaden your scope?and you can do so with leverage.#2: Be DifferentIdeas are in the air. There are lots of people thinking about?and probably working on?the same thing you are...

Aussie Startups: Standing out from the crowd? (Brad Howarth)
2008-02-20 02:26:00
Brad Howarth writes for Australian Anthill on how to stand out from the crowd - for the right and wrong reasons - when pitching in the US: "Part of my job is to listen to the stories people who have built technologies and companies, and then translate those to be understood by the people who read the publications and websites I write for. It's something I've already done a lot of, having chosen to partly specialise in writing about Australian entrepreneurial start-ups. At times it is a gruelling task. Why? Few Australian start-ups have any idea about how to actually explain what they do - let alone the capacity to do so in a way that is relevant to the listener.Entrepreneurs tend to gloss over the communication component of building a company, focusing instead on perfecting the technology and building the business. But what hope do you have of receiving assistance - from investors, partners, customers or even the media - if you can't articulate what makes you special, unique and r...
What?s Your Business Model?
2008-02-16 12:32:00
What’s your business model? This post was guest blogged by Alan Johnson, the author of The Online Business Handbook. So you’re ready to spend a fortune on advertising your website? Can you just picture those profits rolling in? But wait a second, is the foundation upon which you plan on building solid to begin with? A lot of webmasters make the mistake of concentrating on all sorts of aspects related to their future website promotion or monetization efforts and end up neglecting the most important part of any project:the business model. No matter how hard you try, a structure built on a shaky foundation has no chances of lasting. Without a sound business model, every online entrepreneur will be in for a serious reality check. Let’s take blogging as an example andanalyze things for a moment. What is your business model as a blogger? What exactly makes you stand out compared to the millions of similar resources out there? Why would a person want to visit your website...
