Your Stats Have a New Home
2012-01-26 17:46:00
Are you addicted to checking your site stats? You are not alone. The stats dashboard has always been one of the most popular admin screens. It’s gratifying to know that people are visiting your place online. With the WordPress.com front page evolving into a one-stop shop for posting, exploring, following and reading blogs, it seemed natural to put your blog stats there, too.  Stats are becoming more and more about interacting with your readers and other bloggers. You’ll still see your summary stats and chart on your main dashboard, and the full stats page in your dashboard will remain for a while, but the My Stats tab on the WordPress.com front page will soon become the home for the most comprehensive view of your stats. While adding the My Stats tab to the front page, we also gave it an updated look by making the panels regularly spaced, using rounded gravatars for your commenters, and giving it an overall lighter feel:   We’ll be adding even more feature...
Making sense of North Shore market stats
2012-01-09 00:06:00
Over at her informative North Shore Views site Realtor Anne West just posted a look at 3-year market statistics for single-family homes in New Trier Township. While I’m in general agreement with most of what West has to say, I’d hesitate to draw any conclusions from the end-of-December inventory levels. Here’s West on the topic... Read more »
FBI Releases Crime Stats For 2011
2011-12-19 23:49:00
The subject of crime is one that always interests me. Wearing my journalist hat I tend to look at specific crimes rather than the bigger picture. Sometimes it is better to step back, to lose the focus on people like Casey Anthony, or Conrad Murray and take in the the whole forest not just a ...
SAFE SEX APP
2011-12-15 18:56:00
Swedish ad agency, Ester, was recently hired to create a safe sex campaign for young adults in Stockholm. 500,000 condoms embedded with QR codes and a safe sex app later, and the Kondom08 Campaign was born. Here's how it works: Partners scan the QR code, which installs an app onto their smart phones. When initiated (right before sex), the app reminds users to put on their condom and then the phone records the session (sound and movement). Users can then create their own profile based on their stats and compare them with with other safe sex practitioners. Fun!
ETF Stats for November 2011: Yearly Launches Set New Record
2011-12-08 17:15:00
Launch activity slowed to just seventeen new product introductions in November, but the year-to-date count of 292 is enough to clinch the title for most new ETPs in a calendar year.  The previous record of 291 was established four years ago in 2007.  The new monthly additions consisted of thirteen ETFs and four ETNs, bringing current listings to 1,376 (1,176 ETFs and 200 ETNs).  Actively managed ETFs remain at just 39, or less than 3% of the total count. Assets under management slipped by 1.6% but held above the $1 trillion mark.  Trading activity declined 15% for ETFs and 4% for ETNs.  Dollar volume averaged $78.8 billion per day.  The number of ETFs averaging more than $1 billion in . . . → Read More: ETF Stats for November 2011: Yearly Launches Set New Record

New Site Stats Show You Who Comments Most
2011-09-07 18:22:00
Ever wanted to know who’s commenting the most on your blog and what posts they are commenting on? Now your Site Stats can tell you. The new Comments panel in your Site Stats provides three tabs: Top Commenters, Most Commented, and a Summary of comments on your blog. If your blog has fewer than 1000 total comments, your comment stats are based on all comments made since you started your blog. Comment stats for more active blogs reflect the most recent three months of comment activity. For example, a blog with 500 total comments will have the most commented post be the one that has had the most comments across the entire life of the blog. For this blog (with 87K comments) the most commented post is chosen from the posts that were posted in the past three months. The Stats Comments Panel is available now for all WordPress.com blogs. Jetpack users, please bear with us as we improve Jetpack to serve you the new comment stats in the future. Check out the comment stats on your blog b...
GOPers With Biggest Appeal Stats: Herman Cain and Mitt Romney?
2011-06-03 21:00:00
-By Warner Todd Huston It seems that the GOP field (both those formally announced and those assumed to be in it) for the nomination to run against Obama in 2012 is not exciting too many voters, at least not yet. Granted it may be too early to expect too many Americans to be worried about the next election. It's over a year off, after all. Still Pew finds that the "Republican Candidates Stir Little Enthusiasm ." It is interesting, however, that Pew has found that, along with Mitt Romney, Herman Cain has a good excitement factor, especially considering his lack of name recognition compared to Romney... Notre Dame Spring Game Recap: Notes, Quotes and Stats
2011-04-17 00:07:00
The University of Notre Dame football team concludes its biggest weekend of the spring with the 82nd-Annual Blue-Gold Game, won by the Gold 17-14. The spring college football intra-squad game was broadcast live nationally on Versus and available via live video stream at und.com. This year's spring scrimmage drew 27,863 to Notre Dame Stadium. Not bad for a spring intra-squad, in abysmal weather conditions. ND typically draws at least 20,000 and this wasn't too far off from cracking the top five crowds in blue-game history. Three of the five highest have occurred in the last five years....
Guard-heavy UIC piles on stats en route to first Horizon League win
2011-01-30 06:20:00
Howard Moore had a curveball waiting for Youngstown State, a conference one-win team that beat UIC on the road in December, Saturday: a fast, guard-heavy rotation that featured Corey Gray at the point guard spot absolving Robo Kreps of his leash and sending hot-shooting Dipanjot Singh to the perimeter. Many expected the Flames to take advantage of a poor-performing Youngstown State (7-14, 1-10) team at home, but nobody (except maybe UIC assistant Donnie Kirksey who guaranteed a UIC victory on the pre-game radio broadcast) could have predicted how efficiently UIC (6-16, 1-9) could put their system into practice, besting YSU by 22 points for a season-high 83 point night. The three guards, Kreps, Gray and Singh, were among the top four minute-getters...
Tempo-free stats from UIC vs. Detroit
2011-01-09 03:44:00
Check out the recap where I said that Detroit and UIC played to almost a statistical tie. Well here's my justification for it and some notes about each of the "Four Factors". This was a 66 possession game, which was probably faster than Howard Moore wanted.Effective Field Goal Percentage: UIC 45.1 percent; Detroit 52.6 percent - This difference, which comes from Detroit shooting 8-19 from three-point range compared to 1-8 for UIC, was the biggest difference in the game. A few extra outside shots go down and the Flames might've walked away with the victory.Offensive Rebounding Percentage: UIC 52.9 percent; Detroit 48.4 percent - Both teams did an excellent job crashing the offensive glass during the game. UIC grabbed 18 offensive rebounds,...

Do you hate delays? Do you think being told to ?Please wait?? by websites, cash machines, call centers, and the doughnut stand drive-thru guy in the year 2010 is a sure sign modern living isn?t quite meeting our collective expectations as a planet? Good news! Today, we will be rolling out a new, experimental interface for Google FeedBurner. The real story is what?s new under the hood, however: the new interface provides real time stats for clicks, views, and podcast downloads, which means you can start seeing what content is drawing traffic from feed readers, Twitter, and other syndicated sources as it happens. Additionally, if you use the FeedBurner Socialize service, and your platform uses PubSubHubbub or you ping us when you post, you can for the first time get stats on how much traffic your feed items are receiving from Twitter, as well as feed reading platforms like Google Reader in one place. Again, all within seconds of posting your content. Ping? Pong! Yep. That fast. Y...

Sexy Stats
2010-09-30 17:35:00
You may have noticed a change to your stat charts a couple of weeks ago. We ditched Flash in place of a more robust charting library called Flot. If you didn’t notice, go check it out because you can view all of the new charts with modern browsers including mobile devices such as iPhone and iPad. Sooo sexy! Today we updated the charts to use bars instead of points and lines. We’ve also made the stats page super sexy. Each module can be opened and closed, moved, or hidden completely. If you don’t want to see a module, minimize it with one click or use the Screen Options to keep it out of sight. Customize everything and view stats the way you want to. As you hover over each bar in the chart it changes color and displays a tooltip, giving you more information about the data. If the chart is showing data by day, Saturdays and Sundays have a light gray background to make it easier to see weekly patterns. Under the chart you’ll notice a new area, called “for...

It's been just over 2 months since the draft and most of the top picks have been signed, and signed for a while, so I thought it would be interesting to take a look at how they were performing. Now it should be noted that sample sizes of this size are relatively meaningless, but it's interesting to look at nonetheless.
News: Blogger to get improved stats google analytics style
2010-07-04 23:31:00
Introducing Blogger Stats Filed under: stats Posted by Staszek Pa?ko and Wiktor Gworek, Software Engineers Although some of you use Google Analytics or other third party tools to track your blog traffic, many of you have requested an easier-to-use, fully-integrated stats feature for Blogger. We heard that, and we are excited to announce that Blogger in Draft now has built-in stats. Just go to Blogger in Draft, and you'll notice a new "Stats" tab. You don't have to install or configure anything to start benefitting from Stats. The coolest thing about the new Blogger Stats is that it monitors and analyzes your visitor traffic in near-real-time. You can see which posts are getting the most visits and which sites are sending traffic to your blog right now. For example, if a reader shares one of your blog posts on Twitter and the post is getting lots of clicks, you will see a traffic increase in Blogger Stats almost instantly, with the particular Tweet mentioning your post being ide...
I just glanced at some stats and HOLY CRAP SHOULD WE HAVE KEPT JIM THOME?!?
2010-07-02 08:20:00
I was happy when the White Sox decided to not sign Jim Thome before this season. Not because I disliked Jim in any way. He was a great player who gave the White Sox some very great years, and from all accounts was an exceedingly great guy (I mean, how many times has the media fallen for the humble white guy from a rural area? Never happens, right?) But I believed the Sox hype, and the Sox hype was that the team was moving in a new direction. They were to become a team based on speed, pitching, and defense, and were disavowing the tradition of slower-than-the-effects-of-the--health-reform-bill sluggers that they confusingly re-avowed in 2006 after winning the World Series in 2005 where they had disavowed it to some degree except not really because Carl Everett was pretty darn slow, especially in his acceptance of modern science.

2010-05-19 14:00:00
Last week I broke the story that thefts on the CTA in Chicago had surged by more than 30% in the first three months of the year. Today I'm revisiting that post to look at a few other crime stats from the first quarter. And remember, these stats are only instructive, not indicative, of what 2010 may hold overall for crimes on the CTA.Nine more assaults this year - up 13%. There were 70 assaults in Q1 2009 vs. 2010 with 79. The biggest growth was in assaults at bus stops -- none in 2009, and 10 in 2010. People were waiting longer at bus stops due to service cuts in February and March, so it makes me wonder if that...

Apple iPad Debut Stats: 3L Units Sold, 1M Apps Downloaded!
2010-04-07 06:00:00
Apple iPad is one of those game-changing products that builds on the success of Apple’s well known iPhone and the iPod. The iPad aims at acting as the missing bridge between smartphones and laptop computers. Other than Apple, many famous players in the sector have also tried their luck with tablet-style computers but have not had any major success so far. We had already told you about the launch of this device and how the iPad could just remain as a luxury product in the Indian market. Let us not talk more and discuss on whether the iPad will hit or fail. A quick glance at the first day sales figures of the Apple iPad clearly shows that the device has been a hit among users already. According to the reports, Apple claims to have sold 300,000 units of the iPad already on the very first day itself out of which 250,000 units were sold on the first via the online store. Although the device is priced on the higher side but Apple is hoping that the refreshing design of the device is mo...

5 Stats to Watch for Cubs Minor Leaguers
2010-03-17 21:53:00
1. DJ LeMahieu- Line Drive %I talked about this in detail during my Top 5 shortstops post, but to summarize, DJ LeMahieu hits way too many groundballs. His swing, while quick and contact oriented, is short and choppy. Last season he beat balls into the ground at a 72% clip, which is absurdly high. Conversely, his line drive rate ended at just 9%, which is about as unimpressive as it sounds. From ESPN, here are the percentage of each type of balls in play in the MLB that turned into hits: Ground ball BABIP: .237 Fly ball BABIP: .138 Line drive BABIP: .724 For major league players, every grounder they turn into a line drive basically results in half a...

1. Google Launches its own programming language – named ‘Go’ Its been a long time since we are hearing rumors regarding Google OS although it indeed announced plans for Chrome OS but it was no where near to humongous amount of data(codes) churning from its factory. So what does Google decide to do – It launches its own programming language named ‘Go’. Google has become sort of code repository due to its open support lent to many open source programmes. It has also invented many in-house languages to decipher tricky code languages into simpler versions increasing throughput for many of its services. Google through this public introduction of programming language wants to revolutionize the system oriented languages to make it more easy to understand and develop apps. If this language gets adopted by developers then it would be a big victory for Google in its plan to stake claim on operating system arena. This certainly poses challenge to Microsoft as th...

2009-09-30 04:47:00
FeedBurner has been busy analyzing, publicizing, optimizing and monetizing your feeds since 2004, and in that time, we've seen our fair share of feed traffic. In fact, we see billions of hits from feed traffic per week, and we watch this data carefully for trends and opportunities to improve what we do in making sure your feed content is delivered as quickly as possible, as accurately as possible, no matter what its destination might be.Today we are making an improvement that we think will serve our publishers better by making our service more compatible with search engines that crawl feeds. When we started the service, one thing we were not sure of at the time was how the feed reading ecosystem would treat the links we rewrite in order to give you statistics on how many people click on your feed items. For instance, on the previous post in this blog, we change the link in the feed item for "FeedBurner Terms of Service Update" fromhttp://adsenseforfeeds.blog-spot.com/2009/08/feedburn...

72% Mobile Internet Users Engage With Ads. Do These Stats Convey The True P
2009-09-14 14:30:00
Can advertisers expect a better engagement level with their target audience on the mobile phones than the wired internet? Possibly so, if a recent study by InMobi, a mobile advertising network is anything to go by. According to this new report, nearly three-fourth of the mobile internet users in India positively engage with the brands that advertise on the mobile phones! But be forewarned, this report is nowhere close to a scientific study. The advertising network surveyed 205 students from Mumbai IIT School of Management. 57% of the respondents had accessed Internet from their mobile phones. Of this 57%,  72.5% agreed to have engaged with the ads in some way or the other. 10% of them had called the advertiser for more info while 17.5% had gone ahead and made a purchase. I cannot digest these numbers for the simple reason that neither are they a diverse sample set nor is the sample set large enough. But it is worth discussing if engagement levels on the mobile phones are in fact b...

About my “Latest Breathing Stats” sidebar
2009-07-22 03:29:00
In much the same way that you would keep a diary of your asthma symptoms, I came up with the concept of posting my daily breathing parameters as a way of letting others out there know, (i.e. my doctors, family and fellow asthmatics), on how my lungs are doing on any particular day. I often forget though, that while most chronic lungers know what this stuff means, a lot of people who visit my blog probably don’t.  So, if anyone is interested, here’s a little explanation of what all that junk means…. I hope it’s not too confusing. There are 4 major components to my daily breathing stats:  a Peak flow measurement , an FEV1 measurement a Breathing Update ( which is basically a subjective description of how I’m breathing on that particular day, and lastly, a section labeled Todays Fitness Activity where I jot down what, if any, exercise I did for that day. (Ive used the above links for general definitions of what Peak Flows and FEV1 measurement...

Over the last week, and as reported in the FeedBurner status blog , we experienced a technical issue that caused us to report reduced subscribers from Google Feedfetcher in your feed analytics at FeedBurner and AdSense. Our engineers have resolved the issue, and been able to rebuild stats from our logs such that the totals should now be correct. Please note that in the past, we were not able to correct historical statistical anomalies, but are now able to do so, always using the actual traffic data.No data was lost during this process, nor were any subscribers actually unsubscribed from your feed. Ad impression reporting and revenue were unaffected by these subscriber reporting issues. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience as we continue to merge our systems with other Google systems behind the scenes.Posted by Steve Olechowski, Google Produ...
