Anti-aging Skin Products Launched From Stem Cell Research
2008-05-03 01:36:00
National Stem Cell has revealed that it is set to launch a new range of anti-aging products that have been developed using stem cell research.Tropelastin produced by human embryonic stem cells has been utilised by the company's subsidiary Decouverte Cosmetique in skin firming products, CosmeticsDesign.com reports.Chief executive of National Stem Cell Michael Cohen told the website that it is this chemical that can provide women with a 'glow' after they conceive. He added that the company had used pre-2001 stem cells and neither destroyed nor created any cells during product development. Some scientists have criticised the use of stem cell research in the development of cosmetic products because they say the technology is not yet advanced enough to deliver drastic results."The notion that you could do that with a cream is a little bit ahead of itself," dermatologist Dr Kenneth Beer told the LA Times. "It's a great piece of marketing because there is so much interest in stem cells."
Conservatives are not anti-stem cell research
2008-04-27 01:05:00
How many times have you heard that conservatives simply don't care about finding cures for the various diseases that ail our society today? And some basic proof for this is the fact that conservatives have been against stem cell research since its inception as an idea in science. Here is a link to a blog, Down with Tyranny, that highlights exactly what I'm talking about, where republicans were

Stem Cell transplant Crohn's Disease - Stem Cell Research and Crohn's Artic
2008-02-22 03:11:00
Long story short. I am now having what I think to be an allergic reaction to Humira. (I have had them to Remicade in the past). My doctor wants me to stop treatment and come in next week to discuss the possibility of a stem-cell transplant. I profess complete ignorance and in fact know nothing about it. Below are some articles that I have not even had time to read yet. In scanning them apparently they can cure Crohn's, something I did not understand to be possible. I meet with Dr. Shafran and his staff a week from Monday to discuss this. I plan on doing a whole lot of research in the meantime. It looks like it has only been done a few times (see below). Grasping at straws here, but does anyone have any insight?-ScottStem Cell Research and Crohn'sRoanoke Teen to Head to Chicago in Pursuit of Crohn's Disease Cure (from July 2003)An insurance company, hospital and federal regulators have approved a Roanoke youngster with a severe intestinal disease to have an experimental stem-cell ...

Stem Cell Research: Technology Vindicates Morality
2007-12-02 23:10:00
Stem cell research like abortion or gun control has been one of those issues that has split the country. It has become almost a litmus test for party affiliation and woe be the individual that doesn’t toe the party line be it for or against stem cell research. Charles Krauthammer lauds George Bush’s stance to stem cell research and reminds people of a point that the left always glosses over or quite frankly, lies about. The left will regularly accuse George Bush of stopping stem cell research. Which is of course patently untrue. What Bush did was to say that no federal research funds would be used for embryonic stem cell research. Private research was not affected in the least. When pressed on this point most liberals will concede it is true. Not surprisingly, some insist Bush has “outlawed” it in spite of facts to the contrary. When I forced one such person to admit that his response was that no meaningful research was likely to be done without governmental funds and oversight....

Stem Cell Research. Clinical application
2007-11-07 18:28:00
An interesting branch of medicine engineering is the stem cell research. This unique branch of medicine engineering is presently undergoing a critical transition. Yet it continues to be a potential component of both medical engineering as well as medical practice. Many people lose cells due to injury or degenerative diseases that have no cure at present. Medicine engineering experts have tried a wide range of experimental models to solve this problem. This has resulted in a gift by the medicine engineering science, the cellular grafting, which is a unique type of cell based therapy. The method that is the most suitable stem cell research and therapy, as devised by the medicine engineering studies, is the magnetic resonance imaging methods. They produce non-evasive images of opaque tissues. If on the other hand, the cells are transplanted, medicine engineering has the answer in tracking them by MRI, after making them MR visible. In fact the medicine engineering studies are more conce...

Federal Funding Will Harm Stem Cell Research
2007-09-26 02:17:00
Yesterday, I was chastised by a lib for being a against the the government's funding of stem cell research. Now I'm quite sure his illogical rant was inspired by his Bush Derangement Syndrome. You know he blames Bush for just about everything and especially for those who have died from any form of cancer, Alzheimer's ALS etc. He is convinced that Bush has caused these people to die by rejecting the federal government's funding of embryonic stem cell research. Without even getting into the legitimate moral and ethical debate that has surrounded embryonic stem cell research, this man's proposition that the government's funding of such research would save and improve lives is totally absurd. No doubt there is incredible potential to alleviate diseases and to push unprecedented medical advances via stem cell research. It is thus understandable that so many are so eager to empower the government to fund it. Nevertheless history is is not so kind to government intervention in science...

There is a lot of hype out there about embryonic stem cells, true and false. Indeed, adult stem cells are easier to “match” to the person, are more ...
Pope Benedict XVI Backs Adult Stem Cell Research
2007-06-29 13:40:00
Pope Benedict XVI has endorsed adult stem cell research, distinguishing it from the manipulation of stem cells from human embryos, which the Roman Catholic Church condemns.Speaking at the end of his weekly general audience, the Roman Catholic leader saluted delegates at a global conference on the use of adult stem cells to treat cardiac problems, organised by La Spaienza University in Rome."On this matter the position of the Church, supported by reason and by science, is clear," he said."Scientific research must be encouraged and promoted, so long as it does not harm other human beings, whose dignity is inviolable from the very first stages of existence."The Roman Catholic Church believes that an embryo is wholly a human being. For that reason, it condemns abortion and genetic manipulation such as research on embryonic stem cells.Unlike embryonic stem cells, or primitive cells from early-stage embryos capable of developing into almost every tissue of the body, adult stem cells divid...

Adult Stem Cell Research Helps Children With Type 1 Diabetes
2007-06-27 14:00:00
Chicago, IL (LifeNews.com) -- Another study has been published showing that adult stem cell research has just as much potential, if not more, than embryonic stem cells to help patients with various diseases. In this cases, researchers at University of Florida founds that stem cells from umbilical cord blood helped children newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. The study found that stem cell transfusions using the adult stem cells helped the children reduce their disease severity, possibly re-setting the immune system and slowing the destruction of their insulin-producing cells.Michael J. Haller, MD, a professor at the University of Florida College of Medicine and lead author of the study, presented the findings at the American Diabetes Association's 67th Annual Scientific Sessions."After only six months, it is too early to tell how long the children will benefit from this therapy, but early signs indicate that it may have helped enhance blood glucose control and management," Dr. Ha...

Straight Talk: McCain vs. Romney on Stem Cell Research [Framing Science]
2007-06-19 09:26:00
First John McCain was against embryonic stem cell research, now he’s for it. First Mitt Romney was for embryonic stem cell research, now he’s against it. If either of these GOP candidates win the nomination, given their track record on stem cell research and a host of other issues, it will be difficult for them to push the traditional “flip flopper” attacks on the Democratic nominee. Over at the NY Times’ “The Caucus” blog, Michael Luo details a memo released by the McCain campaign describing Romney’s flip-flopping statements on stem cell research over the years. It’s a great read. The clincher is that the Romney campaign responds by arguing that the former Governor has always been consistent on the issue! But before you accept McCain’s argument for “straight talk” in the campaign, watch this brilliant montage of contradictory McCain statements compiled by filmmaker Robert Greenwald and released on YouTube. ...

Morality And Science

I was catching up on some news one day when a story caught my eye about stem cell research.(http://news.yahoo.com-/s/nm/20060606/sc_nm/science_st-emcells_dc_5). Now, I am, an avid supporter of this very controversial subject and am hoping that the government will get their head out of their asses and focus on the benefits as opposed to buckling to Christian Beliefs.......Morality has no place in Medical Science, especially when it could treat and save lives......What I find so funny about it all is, as long as they are using private money they can bypass all the federal restrictions placed on it....My father, being the conservative Republican that he is, and I , the very liberal person I am, have gotten into this debate time and time again. The only argument that he can provide against it, is the morality argument.....Give me something more than that.....His stance???? God didn't intend for us to do that.... Really? He has personally stated this to you? Let me guess, it was the burni...

Only an idiot blocks Stem Cell research, cure for Diabetes 1 at hand?
2007-04-15 05:47:00
You know, I've read the news and I even laughed at the Stem Cell parody that southpark created with the whole superman eating featuses. But the fact is some news today proves exactly why stem cell research is so important! Remember, Embryonic Stem Cells are basically the cells from a body that can take the form of whatever tissue is needed, heart cells, skin cells, just about anything. Many around the country found the fact that Stem Cell research used aborted featuses for medical usage as inhuman and immoral, so the debate on blocking and unblocking stem cell research has been going on for years now. According to the Times report, "A stem cell treatment has cured type 1 diabetes in 14 of 15 people during experimental tests." 14 of the 15 patients were insulin-free for some time following the treatment. Eleven of those were able to dispense with supplemental insulin immediately following the infusion of stem cells and have not had recourse to synthetic insulin since then... ...

VOA?s Deborah Tate reports from Capitol Hill.Supporters of the legislation argue that embryonic stem cell research offers hope for cures for Parkinson?s disease, spinal cord injuries, diabetes, and other ailments.Senator Tom Harkin, an Iowa Democrat, is chief sponsor of the bill:?It is about giving hope to people, it is about health, it is about helping people who have devastating, devastating illnesses,? said Tom Harkin. But opponents say taxpayer money should not be used for such research, as it requires the destruction of days-old embryos. That, they say, amounts to destroying human life.Senator Sam Brownback is Kansas Republican:?We know that the human embryo is a human life, so how should we treat it?
